I have seen and read this "joke " repeated several times on TV in the past few days and find it in very poor taste. Newsreaders on TV have been chuckling. Tourette's can be a serious and debilatating condition and sufferers have huge challenges in everyday life. Surely we are a bit more grown up these days than to poke fun at people with a neurological condition?
Is is just me being stuffy?

(toyed with something to do with rainbows there - but the the/a confusion was annoying me)

Sorry. Biscuit for me.

interesting article above (I am a geek who likes stand-up and how jokes are structured and my other half loves Tim Vine who has spent his life making pun-based jokes. We both liked Olaf's demerara joke more than the florets one but hadn't seen a racist intent in it - if there was one as a pp implied that obviously taints the joke).

SeroxatBlonde · 22/08/2019 10:36

Really?! It’s a joke about vegetables

It's not.

I don't want to hear jokes about any disabilities, I don't like it at all.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 22/08/2019 10:37

My husband is Asian and recently he's been watching this comedian from his country who makes lots of small dick/small eyes/eating dog type jokes.

It's a weird one. He finds it hilarious but then he grew up in his country, not experiencing prejudice. It's the same as me, a white woman, laughing at white stereotypes eg we all drink Starbucks and eat bland food.

But if I watch it with him, and I laugh, is it then a problem? Is it racist? I wouldn't joke about physical differences between races generally.

It's weird. And hard.

Guavaf1sh · 22/08/2019 10:38

People being so offended on behalf of others over an unfunny one liner that is widely acknowledged to be inoffensive is the real joke

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2019 10:41

@Guavaf1sh can you show me some of these offended people, please?

LiveInAHidingPlace · 22/08/2019 10:41

So where do you draw the line guava

If someone is using the n word, may I be offended on people's behalf? If someone says we should send pakis back to where they came from or string up the gays or that women should be in the kitchen, can I be offended?

It's got fuck all to do with :being offended:

Sick of hearing that shitty argument.

DGRossetti · 22/08/2019 10:44

Vir Das (Netflix) would test some peoples tastes ...

Personally I'm thrilled there are so many comedians from all over the world that are able to perform in the UK (loved the BBCs "Big Asian Stand Up series recently). I love hearing what other cultures find funny and how they express it. I also love that it's the UK - and presumably it's population (although not on this thread Grin) that attracts them. Given that even Eddie Izzard isn't a staple feature on German TV and radio, I love that Henning Wehn has made a career here.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2019 10:44

Come on, @DGRossetti - i’m waiting to sign up to your campaign. I am so pissed off with being told i’m offended.

CendrillonSings · 22/08/2019 10:49

I am so pissed off with being told i’m offended.

Are you saying that being called offended has offended you? Grin

JoySuckClub · 22/08/2019 10:50

Yes, he makes me smile.

My autistic DS is currently playing on a 1980s personal computer. He's on the spectrum

That beats my CDO gag. The challenge was the best children's autism joke and this is currently in the lead! Anyone else got any offerings?

Batcrazymum3 · 22/08/2019 11:00

Tourette’s is a thing, it exists. This "joke" does not make fun of it, it used it's existence for a word play laugh.

As a Scot, I'm more offended that this was the best "joke" at the Fringe, must have been a poor year!

TheYeaSayer · 22/08/2019 11:42

My autistic DS is currently playing on a 1980s personal computer. He's on the spectrum

Ah, but that's quite funny, and not offensive at all. It's not poking fun at autistic children, nor stereotyping their traits; just punning on the word "spectrum"

The florets joke is using tired and ignorant stereotypes about how Tourettes presents. It doesn't offend me, but I think it's in poor taste. The fact that it has upset people with Tourettes means that surely it's not OK?

DGRossetti · 22/08/2019 11:49

The fact that it has upset people with Tourettes means that surely it's not OK?

Well, some people with Tourettes ...

Jade218 · 22/08/2019 11:52

What is the world coming to

Jade218 · 22/08/2019 11:54

@Batcrazymum3 lmaoGrinGrin

Alsohuman · 22/08/2019 11:55

But has it upset anyone with Tourette’s? I’m not convinced.

Tourettes Action have complained and demanded an apology. They say they've had calls from upset sufferer's and their families about this.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2019 12:01

It’s not about individuals it might or might not have upset. It’s about the giving of a high profile award to a joke about disability. Which legitimises and normalises jokes about disability. They are no longer “edgy” or “near the knuckle”. They are mainstream. So OK for kids to tell in school for example. Because why not? A joke about disability was the best joke at Edinburgh after all.

TheYeaSayer · 22/08/2019 12:02

That apostrophe wasn't mine! Stupid phone.

Lifecraft · 22/08/2019 12:07

The fact that it has upset people with Tourettes means that surely it's not OK?

People complaining about it has also upset some people with Tourettes. So by your logic, complaining about it is also not ok?

DGRossetti · 22/08/2019 12:08

Mandy Rice Davies springs to mind ...

TheYeaSayer · 22/08/2019 12:14

Ah, but there'd have been no complaints at all if he'd never told the joke in the first place! Smile
