Just that really. Where did it come from?

AIBU to find it annoying?

Please explain, never heard of this, is it an urban dictionary thing ??

Wehttam · 19/08/2019 14:36

It’s very instagram generation, usually meaning making extra money to pay for unnecessary crap everyone posts on the gram like ASOS hauls and trips to Dubai 😂🤮

Cinammoncake · 19/08/2019 14:37

It means a second job/making money from a hobby.

I have an MN ad for a side hustle at the top of my screen

BarbarAnna · 19/08/2019 14:38

It’s what all the bloody MLM types say on my Facebook and it gives me the rage.

summersherewishiwasnt · 19/08/2019 14:43

Oh ok, erm yeah it sounds wanky.

I offer my kids a side hussle opportunity later. I need the grass cutting. And the car cleaning 🤣

MyKingdomForACaramel · 19/08/2019 15:15

I provide services to small businesses. I’ve had enquires from people saying “this is my side hustle” (which generally means - I don’t actually have the money to pay you). Gives me the rage every time I see it written down

MerryShitmas · 19/08/2019 15:17

Does my head in. Hustling to me refers to something illegal to at least some degree.
Always tempted to say “You sell Avon not cocaine, sit down, Rebecca.” When my MLM “friend” posts about her side hustle Confused Hmm

HesMyLobster · 19/08/2019 15:18

Shitmas that made my day! That's exactly what I'll be saying when I hear such drivel in future!

NoSquirrels · 19/08/2019 15:20

It means "second job" or, more usually, "hobby that might one day pay something"...

Bezalelle · 19/08/2019 15:20

It's annoying.

It conjures up images of some sort of dodgy Mafia-related gig, when in reality it's Louise from Surrey baking cakes in her spare time.

Snog · 19/08/2019 15:22

I think it's the modern way, it's wise and often necessary to diversify your income streams.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/08/2019 15:25

“You sell Avon not cocaine, sit down, Rebecca.”

This ^

MLM saddos trying to seem down with the kids.

Exactly.

Never heard of it, presumably because i'm not on social media so it doesn't bother me a jot.

Esto · 19/08/2019 16:07

I have never heard this before and for some reason imagined some sort of a dance move... Confused

Pipandmum · 19/08/2019 16:08

Never heard it before

Chouetted · 19/08/2019 16:09

When i first saw it, I thought it was a euphemism for prostitution...

PinkyPrincessy · 19/08/2019 16:09

Sounds like someone is just bitter because they can’t be arsed to get a side hustle to improve their financial situation

PuffHuffle5 · 19/08/2019 16:11

Side hustle sounds like something people say when they want others to think they’ve found a lucrative way to make extra money, when actually they’re probably getting very little.

Sparklesocks · 19/08/2019 16:15

It’s an Americanism - just a colloquial way of referring to a second job or additional work on top of your 9-5, but often a second job with flexibility like freelancing etc. Funnily enough it was first used in 1950 so isn’t new, but the popularisation is.

I understand some people use it to mean a creative outlet they make extra money from, so you might be an accountant 9-5 but if you sell handmade candles at craft fairs on weekends that would be your side hustle.

I think the Instagram stuff paints it as a sort of entrepreneurial - lots of people use it with aspirational quotes and positivity.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 19/08/2019 16:16

It goes hands in hand with 'gig economy'.

God forbid we should refer to it for what it is, people being fucked over with zero hour contracts and having to have multiple jobs to get by.

Side hustle definitely used to be something dodgy, like the bloke selling bootleg videos at the pub.

Cinammoncake · 19/08/2019 16:21

Grin Yes I might go busking later or eBay some stuff then announce facebook that I've got a nice little side hustle

Agreed

Inboxing huns everywhere about this amazing opportunity I have, work for 5 minutes a month* side hustling and quit you job, get an Audi on finance and post pics on FB of your life totally smashing it at events you need to buy tickets for with all the other huns and their clip on veneers and slug sized brows.

*5 minutes a month will net you exactly 0.001p in revenue OTE of £50 per month for working every spare hour god sends, alienating family and friends and losing dignity.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 19/08/2019 16:41

I hate it because it implies a woman running her own business is "playing at being a grown up" or something and should go back to working for the man. It's a patronizing term that frequently seems to be levelled at women's enterprises (and now MLM... Hmm ).
But I'm self-employed work from home and I work damn hard at my business and very sick of people assuming I don't work.
