To think there's never an excuse for fox hunting

catspyjamas27 · 17/08/2019 22:50

There's a bull fighting thread up atm.

I feel the same about fox hunting. I live rurally, I get that foxes can cause devastating damage. But is it ever ok to hunt one down and watch it being tore apart for fun?

I just can't get my head around the mentality of the people who enjoy this shit?

It’s only hated because it tends to be the upper classes doing it. They are vermin and need to be controlled.

ChocChocButtons · 18/08/2019 10:43

My dad only shot foxes who posed a threat to his livestock.

Unfortunately foxes do a lot of expensive damage to livestock and thus have to be controlled. It’s a shame to kill foxes as they are beautiful but once a Fox gets in the sheep or chickens they will just keep coming back.

Fox hunting is more of a traditional thing these days. They very rarely catch anything.

ChocChocButtons · 18/08/2019 10:47

I’ll never forget as a child going to let the chickens out and out came running a Fox with my gorgeous cockerel in his mouth :( so sad 😞

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 10:55

It is perfectly possible to be opposed to fox hunting and also accept that foxes need to be controlled.

The double think comes into play with the hunt supporters simultaneously saying that the hunt is essential to control vermin. and that they practically never kill.......

ChocChocButtons · 18/08/2019 11:00

Thing is right do you live in a farming community? Do you know ppl personally involved in hunts? I do and so I know how many foxes they actually catch, it’s not many.

I’m not saying it’s nice but actually hounds can kill a Fox in seconds it’s actually more humane then shooting because if you miss that animal will run of and die in agony slowly.

iggi999 · 18/08/2019 11:16

Ah now, that's no way to talk about the upper classes.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 11:29

Actually I think fox hunting only still exists because posh people like it. All the working class blood sports have been illegal for ages.

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2019 11:36

Exactly.

If the working classes were chasing urban foxes through council estates accompanied by a pack of Staffies, I'm sure it would be frowned upon somewhat more Grin

Orlandointhewilderness · 18/08/2019 11:44

I'm going to hide this thread as soon as I've posted but just wanted to say that if you think only posh people hunt you are blind! I know a huge amount of people who hunt, yes there are very posh people but there are a widely ranging array. There are complete twats, as in any sport, but a huge amount of them are people who care a great deal about the countryside and know and understand what he management of it far, far more than most people opposed to hunting.

Yes people enjoy the ride. To the hunt staff it isn't a jolly - They have a job to do and it is another working day to them. But for a lot of the mounted field it is hunt to ride not ride to hunt, and really does it matter?! The fox certainly doesn't care!

Hunting pays my wages, gives me solid employment and is an integral part of the countryside. Perhaps you should find out a little more about WHY people are so passionate about it before making up your mind.

growingfrenchlavender · 18/08/2019 11:48

I wholeheartedly agree with worra

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 18/08/2019 11:54

It’s disgusting, inhumane and has no place in this day and age. Unbelievable that people still defend it.

catspyjamas27 · 18/08/2019 11:58

@Orlandointhewilderness I suspect you'll hide the thread because you know what a flaming you'll get for defending such a disgusting activity that has no place in modern society.

I don't need to know a lot about the countryside to know it's barbaric. There are other ways to cull and control the population of problem wildlife. This is a blood sport pure and simple. I also give zero fucks about the class or politics of the people doing it. It's irrelevant.

I actually believe that there must be something inherently wrong with people who can find pleasure, excitement and fun in watching a creature be tortured and killed this way.

There are many books and documentaries on why people enjoy killing for kicks.

Sick minds are generally complicated.

NoBaggyPants · 18/08/2019 12:07

@Orlandointhewilderness Hunting pays your wages? Then you have blood on your hands.

Browniebronze · 18/08/2019 12:08

Hunts try and hunt within the law. If a fox is killed about 3 people see it happen. There is not a weird baying group of people frothing at the mouth watching it die.

Browniebronze · 18/08/2019 12:10

People that work on the checkout at sainsburys have blood on their hands. All people who eat meat have blood on their hands.

Pardonwhat · 18/08/2019 12:14

I can’t condemn it when I eat meat. Also, hounds are treated well and loved. Just to contest the claim earlier that they’re mistreated.

catspyjamas27 · 18/08/2019 12:16

@Browniebronze what a load of rubbish. People eating = necessary for survival. People fox hunting = perverse enjoyment for being involved in the horrendous death of an innocent creature. Bloodsport. Entertainment.

FWIW I don't agree with the treatment of farmed animals either but this thread isn't about that it's about hunting. And who cares how many people physically see the poor thing being ripped apart? The rest still know it happens and are ultimately involved in the process that leads to it. I genuinely don't know how people can defend it.

“I can’t condemn it when I eat meat. Also, hounds are treated well and loved. Just to contest the claim earlier that they’re mistreated.”

What happens to hounds when they are too old to hunt or who are inured?

Browniebronze · 18/08/2019 12:19

I don't need to defend it. Hunts are successfully working around the country and I believe that hunt membership is rising. You are perfectly within your rights to hate it of course.

Pardonwhat · 18/08/2019 12:19

They get retired. It’s a massive misconception that they’re ill treated. I’m sure on the odd occasion it does happen - but no more so than the average dog in the average home.
I don’t hunt for what it’s worth.

42isthemeaning · 18/08/2019 12:19

I grew up in the countryside and I'm now back living here with my own family. I've known many, many adults and children who go shooting, hunting and also those who follow the hunts. Believe me, I've heard every 'justification' under the sun for preserving hunting as a 'sport'. My personal view is this: it is abhorrent and cruel. Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

Pardonwhat · 18/08/2019 12:20

Or they sometimes go back to the person who puppy walked them.

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2019 12:21

Hunts try and hunt within the law. If a fox is killed about 3 people see it happen. There is not a weird baying group of people frothing at the mouth watching it die.

So just 3 people being entertained by fear, suffering and death?

Shame they can't sit inside their local abattoir with a bag of popcorn really.

Browniebronze · 18/08/2019 12:23

It's not particularly entertaining, it's a job, same as working in an abbatoir or a chicken factory. Not very palatable to most people, but necesssary none the less.
