AIBU to ask when your DC first watched Star Wars?

My exhausted kids fell asleep at 6.30 last night, which meant at five am start today 😫. We’ve filled the time watching E.T, which they’ve seen before - they’re twins, aged 5.

It made me think (because ET tries to engage with a kid dressed as Yoda during the Halloween scene) when can they watch Star Wars? When did your DC watch the original 1977 one?

Also - while we’re here with many many weeks of summer holiday to keep them entertained at 5am, what other classics could they watch? We’ve done Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins to death!

My Girl? Too sad?

My 6 year old loves the Star Wars films - all of them.
He also loves wizard of oz, Charlie and the chocolate factory (original), labrynth, flight of the navigator. And the Jurassic park films.

DS saw the first one at an early age-4 - because we were going to Disney.
He’s a very big fan. He isn’t a sensitive type though.

FrancesFryer · 16/08/2019 07:02

I watched it when i was 6.

Runssometimes · 16/08/2019 07:58

7 here, we’ve just started watching the series.

WhenYouCantRunYouCrawl · 16/08/2019 07:59

5, he's seen all of them except Rogue one because I felt that was too violent for him.

Namenic · 16/08/2019 08:00

I think Disney films like jungle book, lion king are good.

Vik1ng · 16/08/2019 08:02

I remember being taken to the cinema to see the original screening. I would’ve been 4 or 5 years old. Love the films even to this day Smile

ShatnersWig · 16/08/2019 08:02

I was 8. Because the first time it was shown on UK tv was in 1982 and couldn't have seen it before then. I was 7 when Jaws was first shown on UK tv and I loved that too.

crumpet · 16/08/2019 08:03

Mine saw the original Star Wars trilogy (episodes 4,5 and 6) from about 5. The next trilogy (episodes 1,2 and 3) were left until much later, but episode 3 is I think a 12 and quite dark.

mnahmnah · 16/08/2019 08:05

DS was 6 for star wars.

What about Bedknobs and Broomsticks?

Nanny McPhee

Rystall · 16/08/2019 08:05

Definitely by 5/6. Primarily because I’m a Star Wars geek and couldn’t wait for the DC to see them!! They love them. We watch all of them constantly. There is a scene at the end of Episode III where Anakin slides into lava & becomes horrifically disfigured- which leads to him wearing the Darth Vader mask. I skipped over that for a few years with them. Otherwise no issue.

stayathomer · 16/08/2019 08:05

It's a tough one, starting with my Girl, I think I was 12 when I saw that and it stated with me so I don't think there's any age it won't affect you!! Some of the star wars are tougher than others- when Darth Vador 'arrives' is a very harsh one as there's fire and burning etc but for the other ones I think with a parent there 6 is fine. I generally watch anything there could be an issue with before them to check and then put the film on earlier in the day then play/watch something really light afterwards so they don't have bad dreams.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 16/08/2019 08:05
  1. We're a family of Star Wars nerds so it's required viewing. Like PP though we held off on Rogue One until 9 as I felt it was a bit darker. Bloody brilliant film though.
edenhills · 16/08/2019 08:06

My twins first watched a new hope aged 4.

kjhkj · 16/08/2019 08:07

5/6 but we always skipped the bodies scene in a new hope (although it is a bit blink and you'll miss it anyway). The original trilogy is fine. They didn't watch the 12 rated ones until they were about 10.

stayathomer · 16/08/2019 08:07

Snap! Said it at the same time as you Rystall

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 16/08/2019 08:09

OP - it's perhaps the wrong time of year but have your kids seen Home Alone? I remember my eldest was absolutely obsessed with it around that age.

JacquesHammer · 16/08/2019 08:09

Both me and my sister watched episodes 4,5 and 6 around 5ish. DD was the same.

Nobody should watch 1, 2 and 3 as they’re an abomination Grin

Vik1ng · 16/08/2019 21:49

Agreed!

tobypercy · 16/08/2019 21:58

Lego movie :)

Stravapalava · 16/08/2019 22:04

The original ones - 7. The 2000s ones - 8. Still not watched the newer ones yet.

Stravapalava · 16/08/2019 22:08

Other films my DC love:

Bridge to Terabithia
Labyrinth
Fern Gully
Wallace and Gromit
Camp Rock
High School Musical
Trolls
The Emoji movie
Mama Mia
The Incredibles
How to Train Your Dragon
First couple of Harry Potters
Brave
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Enchanted

Aquamarine1029 · 16/08/2019 22:11

Three years old.

EatenByDinosaurs · 16/08/2019 22:24

We did the same as Rystall, also a family of Star Wars geeks! Agree about the Anakin and lava scene too.

I also skipped the bit in The Force Awakens where Kylo Ren kills Han Solo, but DH let DC watch it so maybe I was being a bit over cautious.

What about Labyrinth (if you can cope with David Bowie's obscenely tight trousers, DC were in stitches, no idea how I missed that before!) and The Princess Bride?

lavenderbluedilly · 16/08/2019 22:28

Some of them are rated 15. My son watched the Phantom Menace aged 6, but was a bit older for the other ones
