AIBU - John Lewis Return

chouchoutan · 14/08/2019 09:46

I bought two king size fitted sheets from John Lewis - online order. Put one on the bed and threw away the packaging but, after just a couple of nights use, it's really badly fitting and way too big and baggy.

Called John Lewis to request to return both but they will only accept the unused one as I don't have the packaging for the second one. I explained that the item is just not fit for purpose as a 'fitted' sheet but they then said I had to take that up with the supplier directly as it's not a JL own brand product.

AIBU to expect JL to accept both items and refund me?

Looking at the website, it looks to me as if the sheet you bought is for a deep fit mattress but I don't think the name is very helpful. Flexifit sounds as if it should fit standard as well as deep fit mattresses.

The problem is that you have slept on it. As others say, they would probably be more flexible in the shop rather than online. It might be worth writing to Customer Services saying you were disappointed, expected more of John Lewis, and hope they won't use this supplier again etc. Normally I would suggest writing a review as I have seen customer services responding to negative reviews but as this is a special purchase, it won't be on their website once stocks have gone.

yourestandingonmyneck · 14/08/2019 14:23

I don't think YABU. I thought part of the way JL justified their prices was by providing over and above customer service.

As a pp said, you should try doing it in store.

Goat: There are no risks of blood clots if you take transdermal HRT (patches/gel) and even a very low risk on tablets (which are less popular these days)

Thank you for this. I'll read up on it before I see GP next week re. Blood results x

Oops... you can tell I've lost it today! Grin. Sorry, wrong thread!!!

jesuschristwtf · 14/08/2019 15:21

yuck! you used it for 2 days and now you want to return it??

SuperSara · 14/08/2019 15:25

@Rumours0fAHurricane

Some of these responses are just plain wrong

Yours in particular, given that OP has found she's bought the wrong size.

ny20005 · 14/08/2019 15:26

I have a weird size mattress so come a cropper to this a lot.

That said, you know it's an issue so you try it & when it doesn't fit, you bring it back

The issue is you threw away the packaging & used the sheet before realising you'd bought the wrong one

DontCallMeShitley · 14/08/2019 15:41

This is why I buy flat sheets and take ages tucking them under the mattress. Otherwise it is impossible to find a fitted sheet that fits, is made of cotton and is not slippery.

maddy68 · 14/08/2019 15:47

You have additional rights when buying online. You should be able the get a refund. If it states a double size and it's too big then you are entitled to a refund www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/shopping

whattodowith · 14/08/2019 16:06

YABU. Bed sheets are quite intimate, it’s a little bit like expecting to return underwear imo.

nowayhose · 14/08/2019 18:36

@Rumours0fAHurricane

It's yuk because it's something you use in an intimate way. I'm quite sure not everyone wears pyjamas, definitely doesn't have a foot fungus and never ever has sex on their sheets ! So, yuk !

PancakeAndKeith · 14/08/2019 18:44

I agree that this guff about flexifit is misleading.
It makes it sound like it’ll fit on any king sized mattress not just ones that need extra deep.

PancakeAndKeith · 14/08/2019 18:46

I’m guessing all the people screaming yuk never sleep in hotels or at friends houses.

neverdrinkingagain66 · 14/08/2019 18:57

YABVU. You used the bloody sheet for two nights. Of course you can’t return it Hmm

CitadelsofScience · 14/08/2019 19:07

Pancake I'm thinking more those posters are a little hard of critical thinking and the implication of the wording on the product description in law.

Notwiththeseknees · 14/08/2019 19:49

I'll swap with you OP - one of my KS sheets is sooooo tight the mattress bends up at the bottom, but I'm determined it's going on! I just weigh it down with a throw, I just keep forgetting to throw it out Grin

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver · 14/08/2019 20:09

I’m guessing all the people screaming yuk never sleep in hotels or at friends houses

completely irrelevant

The OP reading details about what she is buying would actually help

Joerev · 14/08/2019 20:11

Psh

I once got a super king size Egyptian cotton bedsheet for my king sized bed cos it was in the sale! I just told the extra under the mattress. Works perfectly well. Doesn’t even sag.

CallarMorvern · 14/08/2019 20:40

Can't believe the some of the responses here.
The item isn't fit for purpose, you wouldn't know this until it had been used. I recently returned 2 school shirts to M&S that looked like dish rags when washed, and they had shrunk despite following instructions. M&S refunded without question and with an apology.

TheLette · 14/08/2019 21:00

As someone who regularly has these arguments and a lawyer, I'd try again. If there is a problem it's John Lewis' responsibility to sort, not the manufacturer's. I would mention that you have rights under the Consumer Rights Act and say that the product is clearly not as described (as it is not suitable for your mattress, despite being the right size and being no more than 36cm deep) and/or not fit for purpose. It's unfortunate you didn't spot the issue when you first fitted the sheet, but sometimes issues don't become apparent until a product has been used for its normal purpose. The fact that you used the product doesn't automatically mean you aren't entitled to a refund.

People saying that it's disgusting to return the sheets - unfortunately that's totally irrelevant and no one said anything about John Lewis re-selling the sheets to someone else! What they do with them following return is their business.
