AIBU - John Lewis Return

I bought two king size fitted sheets from John Lewis - online order. Put one on the bed and threw away the packaging but, after just a couple of nights use, it's really badly fitting and way too big and baggy.

Called John Lewis to request to return both but they will only accept the unused one as I don't have the packaging for the second one. I explained that the item is just not fit for purpose as a 'fitted' sheet but they then said I had to take that up with the supplier directly as it's not a JL own brand product.

AIBU to expect JL to accept both items and refund me?

Absolutely @Rumours0fAHurricane

If OP has a kingsize mattress and bought a kingsize sheet then what on Earth has she done wrong?

John Lewis are entirely wrong to say an issue should be taken up with the manufacturer as OP’s contract is with them, the retailer. This is basic consumer law.

If the sheet has a problem where is is not fit for purpose - ie you cannot use it for the purpose for which it was purchased through no fault of your own but because of a fault with the product - the retailer has to take it back and exchange/refund regardless of whether the item has been used (as long as it’s reasonable - you couldnt wear a pair of shoes for a year then claim the heel is worn down) or whether you have the original packaging. This is also basic consumer law.

OP, I’d push back and ask for the matter to be escalated if necessary. AFAIK John Lewis are in the process of taking their customer service back in house from Capita - you might have got unlucky and got a Crapita idiot.

Rumours0fAHurricane · 14/08/2019 11:29

And as for those saying ' I'm glad they're not taking this back as it's second hand.'

WTF? Some of you literally type any old rubbish, regardless of whether it's correct or not Confused

Rumours0fAHurricane · 14/08/2019 11:30

@BrightYellowDaffodil you're spot on of course. And let's assume the OP bought the correct fitting sheet for her bed eh? As opposed to basically calling her an idiot for buying, oh I dunno, a super king size for her cot bed Hmm

NoLeopard · 14/08/2019 11:32

Hopefully op's checking if she got the right depth. I think a non-fitting fitted sheet would have been noticed as soon as it was put on the bed.

ittakes2 · 14/08/2019 11:36

Yabu - if it was baggy it would have been baggy when you put it on. Just tuck it in tighter!!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 14/08/2019 11:39

You can’t tuck in a fitted sheet. It fits or it doesn’t.

Teddybear45 · 14/08/2019 11:42

Of course you can tuck in a fitted sheet. In my house we buy fitted sheets for the largest bed and then use them on all the other mattresses. A superking fitted sheet can be tucked in nicely for a single / double / even a cot.

Yabbers · 14/08/2019 11:54

They're different to fit different depths of mattress. It's no good assuming it's king size, for example, therefore it must fit my king size bed. They can be very different in size.

That’s ridiculous. Surely if something is noted as “king size” it should fit the standard king size bed? If there is a difference for different mattresses, that should be noted in the sizing too. Otherwise you’d have to buy a dozen different sheets to find the one that fits.

chouchoutan · 14/08/2019 11:56

Thanks for the feedback all. It's one of these.

The blurb says 'Flexi-Fit sheeting features patented technology to ensure the ultimate fit on mattresses up to 36cm deep. Smooth, with tailored corners, the sheet stays in place to offer enhanced comfort and diminished disturbance from movement during the night.'

We have a bog standard king mattress, not extra deep.

OP posts:
ittakes2 · 14/08/2019 11:58

I think some people do not realise that extra deep king size sheets exist. You have standard king size sheets and extra deep fitted sheets. They both fit king size beds on the top but the extra deep versions are longer on the sides for extra deep beds. Like beds with pillow tops. I don’t think anyone is suggesting the OP bought something else other than a king size - but she may have bought an extra deep king size which is why it appears baggy to her. And yes you can absolutely still tuck them in! That’s what we do!

NoBaggyPants · 14/08/2019 11:59

Are you saying the sheet has stretched out of shape, or was it too large in the first place? 36cm is a deep mattress, which suggests you bought the wrong thing.

ittakes2 · 14/08/2019 12:01

Sorry cross posted - nope you did not buy an extra deep sheet! I think it strange that it was not baggy when you put it on but was baggy two days later. Just leave an appropriate review - they might change their mind about not refunding.

chouchoutan · 14/08/2019 12:02

Full disclosure - I did originally mistakenly buy an extra deep one! Once I put it on I realised the mistake but as I'd already taken it out of the packaging and there was no way it was going back in again (how do they fold them????!!!) so we lived with it for a week, I washed it on ahot wash but it was waaay too big.

I think that's why I'm miffed about this one - because I definitely bought the right one but it's a rubbish fit and I've already paid for one useless sheet (my own fault).

OP posts:
NoBaggyPants · 14/08/2019 12:03

nope you did not buy an extra deep sheet!

36cm is the depth of John Lewis deep sheets.

Alsohuman · 14/08/2019 12:09

King size isn’t just king size. We have to buy deep fit. Ordinary king size won’t fit our mattress.

JustTwoMoreSecs · 14/08/2019 12:10

I clicked on your link OP:
Under product specifications:
Fits mattress depth Deep fit , up to 36cm

So fair enough that they won’t take it back after you used it, you just bought the wrong size.

Not that this is helpful now but with you your original sheet, if you’d taken it back with the packaging and just apologised that you couldn’t get it back in the packaging, they would have done it for you and refunded you.
With regards to this sheet, 36inches does sound deep but if it says “up to 36 inches” you may be able to argue that point in store. Otherwise you’ll just have to tuck it in under the mattress as best you can

user1471592953 · 14/08/2019 12:16

Your contract is with JL. There is no need to chase the manufacture. JL has to deal with it.

Your statutory right to reject because it isn’t fit for purpose and/or of satisfactory quality overrides JL’s policy not to accept returns on sheets. (There is usually some wording at the end of such a policy saying ‘this doesn’t affect your statutory rights’ which makes the legal position on this clear.)

I’d go back to them and say they’re required to deal with it because your contract is with them; and you’re rejecting the sheet for those reasons. And then see what happens.

HesterLee · 14/08/2019 12:16

It's a deep fit sheet. It says so under 'Product Specifications'

chouchoutan · 14/08/2019 12:17

I'm looking at the packaging now and it says the word deep just once as follows:

'Patented flexifit stretch technology ensures the ultimate fit that stays in place on your mattress, even up to 36cm deep.'

What it should say is 'blah de blah patented bollix, no way it's going to fit properly unless your mattress is 36cm deep'.

OP posts:
ittakes2 · 14/08/2019 12:18

Actually sorry - another website said extra deep was from 40cm but the other posters are right - extra deep at John Lewis is up to 36cm. Unfort you bought another extra deep!

Abraid2 · 14/08/2019 12:20

Sheets are always a bit too big and then the cotton shrinks in the wash a bit.

NoBaggyPants · 14/08/2019 12:22

I'm looking at the packaging now and it says the word deep just once as follows:

It says it on the website, which is the information on which you based your purchase.

I would expect JL would give you a refund if you go in store, but it will be a goodwill gesture, not because the item is not fit for purpose.

CitadelsofScience · 14/08/2019 12:23

Reading their description then I'd say they really should refund you. It says 'up to 36cm' so the implication is that it has some fancy technology so it can fit varying depths of mattresses properly.
