To go to the doctor's because I've eaten too much salt and I think I'm dying

I feel awful.

I've been doing the keto diet for 2 weeks. Part of this is that you replace your electrolytes by drinking salt water, 1tsp dissolved in water. I've done this past 2 days then yesterday for lunch I had a whole packet of pork crackling that was incredibly salty (actually made me feel a bit sick) and then ham hock salad, which was a bit salty, then I had some edamame beans with soy sauce (also salty) I didn't consider this at the time.
When I got home I had sprouts and bacon - more salt.

Then developed the worst headache I've ever experienced at about 8pm, literally feels like my brain was throbbing. Dry mouth and thirsty so I drank a ton of water.

I woke up at 5am with my head throbbing and I could barely move, husband have me a co codamol, barely touched the headache. I still feel wobbly now, my head feels so heavy and throbbing, it's like no headache I've ever had.

Should I go to the doctor this morning?

There is no need to drink salt water!

Booyahkasha · 15/08/2019 19:08

Why does anyone ask for medical advice on a website?! Are we all doctors examining this lady?

Tomkinz · 15/08/2019 19:09

I despair.

You'd never read this kind of post, (and quite of lot of the responses), on Dadsnet. Anyone daft enough to post anything like it would receive one reply which would be, "are you trying for a stupid award? Stop taking salt and drink more water". The thread would then be closed.

YesQueen · 15/08/2019 19:11

@ethelfleda it's high fat, moderate protein, low carb
When you lower your carbs, you can feel pretty grim at first. I am low carb but I eat meat, fish, veg, some berries, dairy, eggs, and yes pork scratchings!

careroftwins · 15/08/2019 19:16

EasyKetoUK on FB is not strict or judgemental. I’ve lost 16lbs since 8 May by lowering carbs, but not being too precious about it. It does work and I’m not hungry. I have lots of low carb veg, berry fruits and I’m losing just over a pound a week which is healthy. Some people on Keto go overboard, but it’s not necessary. I’ve only another 7lbs to go and then I’ll have the occasional slice of bread. Drinking salt water is batshit. It appears OP has an infection as she has a fever, so if she decides to do keto healthily, which is possible, I suggest she joins the FB group I mentioned.

Fairfatandoverfifty · 15/08/2019 19:20

Seriously, no. The NHS is stretched enough with really ill people. You are dehydrated, Drink water and you will soon feel fine. And any diet that promotes drinking salt water needs to be ditched. Eat sensibly, exercise more. Easy to advise, not so easy to adhere to! Hope you feel better soon.

timshelthechoice · 15/08/2019 19:24

Why can't people just eat a balanced diet and regular exercise?

Exactly! That would make too much sense, I guess.

1forAll74 · 15/08/2019 19:29

I too, hope that you will feel better soon, but this diet thing called Keto sounds awful, and you never hear about any of these diet fads been brilliant for people. So to be feeling as rough as you do,maybe you will ditch it.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 15/08/2019 19:36

I think the thread needs to be closed or deleted really. People are still chiming in with advice and calling the OP an idiot, even though she went to the GP yesterday and has since resumed eating tasty, tasty carbs. Some of what's being spouted here is downright dangerous and MN ought to take a bit of responsibility for it.

Booksandwine80 · 15/08/2019 19:38

I think you need to eat a balanced diet of proper food Grin

Keri is a pile of crap by the way. HTH

Booksandwine80 · 15/08/2019 19:39

*keto Hmm

What's Dadsnet? It sounds boring.

manicmij · 15/08/2019 20:00

Surprised you haven't been throwing up with all the salt. Have carbs, proteins without salt and see how you are. Not sure about GP, will probably take you three weeks to get an appointment anyway then of course there will be the lecture about eating sensibly, nit following fad diets.

UnderHisEyeBall · 15/08/2019 20:09

Is that because of their bollocks of rationality.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/08/2019 20:12

If you want to up your salt intake, you could make sole. You tip a a small amount in a glass and dilute with water. Google how to make it. It does help with hydration and on a Keto diet, feeling dehydrated is an issue.

Loverofoldfilms · 15/08/2019 20:14

Thank you CheckingOutTheQuantocks !! Okay, the OP is fine, is eating normal food. All good.

alreadytaken · 15/08/2019 20:14

there is some crap advice on this thread - but that includes the suggestion that all you need to do is eat less and move more. It's not that simple. First not all calories are equal www.health.harvard.edu/blog/theres-no-sugar-coating-it-all-calories-are-not-created-equal-2016110410602

and secondly not everyone absorbs as much from their food www.healthline.com/nutrition/gut-bacteria-and-weight#section2

Eating healthily is your best option for losing weight. Eating lots of vegetables and fruit will help your gut.

Moving more will help but if your health permits try hot baths too www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/04/180424133645.htm There is other research on this for those who want to take a look.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/08/2019 20:14

And yes, I also agree with using diarolyte or the chemist own brand, which is cheaper.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 15/08/2019 20:25

"bollocks of rationality" GrinGrinGrin

3luckystars · 15/08/2019 20:28

I could see a gp within 20 minutes here. (I'm not in England) GP appointments are on the day but you pay money for them.

DieBabySharkDie · 15/08/2019 20:32

Keto is not about eating more salt! You should. It be having that much salt!!!!! Absolutely batshit crazy but only dehydrated. Just don’t drink too much water too quick.

Tiredtessy · 15/08/2019 20:34

Sack this crap off eat salads and exercise an drink a ton of water, you are poisoning yourself

managedmis · 15/08/2019 20:35

Just have a line of coke too and have done with it op

Alpal1 · 15/08/2019 20:54

Phone your gp Please or 911
Potassium deficiency caused by dehydration made me very seriously ill and I ended up on the emergency ward. Your heart can be affected. It may be nothing or you could be very unwell.

timshelthechoice · 15/08/2019 20:56

Oh, god, cancel the cheque!!
