To go to the doctor's because I've eaten too much salt and I think I'm dying

I feel awful.

I've been doing the keto diet for 2 weeks. Part of this is that you replace your electrolytes by drinking salt water, 1tsp dissolved in water. I've done this past 2 days then yesterday for lunch I had a whole packet of pork crackling that was incredibly salty (actually made me feel a bit sick) and then ham hock salad, which was a bit salty, then I had some edamame beans with soy sauce (also salty) I didn't consider this at the time.
When I got home I had sprouts and bacon - more salt.

Then developed the worst headache I've ever experienced at about 8pm, literally feels like my brain was throbbing. Dry mouth and thirsty so I drank a ton of water.

I woke up at 5am with my head throbbing and I could barely move, husband have me a co codamol, barely touched the headache. I still feel wobbly now, my head feels so heavy and throbbing, it's like no headache I've ever had.

Should I go to the doctor this morning?

@TheOrigRightsofwomen, as in the effect of what we eat on our weight loss.

What you consume, not just calories, makes a difference. That was to those rubbishing diet plans.

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver · 14/08/2019 14:00

and science has proved that all calories aren't equal

Grin Grin Grin

I think what some people are trying to say it's that some calories are better than others, so 25 calories worth of carrots are better than 25 calories worth of crisps - it shouldn't be just about calories.

I do love the lengthly explanation and reasoning to try to justify lazy and greedy behaviours though. We all know how to gain or lose weight, but for some it's easier to explain why they can't be bothered.
Who cares about science hey! If only the earth wasn't so flat, it would make diets easier Grin Grin Grin

kateandme · 14/08/2019 14:05

it depends what the calories ahs come from.your body will use more energy to brak down somthign with fat in it also or sugar, rahter than if it was just a complex carb calries for example.it what else the food is bound with so how it then engages and reacts with your body.

Justaboy · 14/08/2019 14:06

OP have you spoken to 111 or seen a doctor as yet if not please do!

Forget these silly fancy diets, eat a decent balanced one and in the right proportions and then..

BURN the enerygy off!, move walk run excercise thats all you have to do its a very simple science!

BenWillbondsPants · 14/08/2019 14:09

FFS, OP. Get yourself on a healthy diet, not something faddy and dangerous.

RosaWaiting · 14/08/2019 14:15

hoping OP is all right.

legolimb · 14/08/2019 14:16

OP - how are you now?

Hope that the headache has abated.

MontStMichel · 14/08/2019 14:17

sheshoots

TBH, with the prognosis of Lennox Gastaut syndrome, the side effects of being on 3 - 4 anti-epileptic drugs, the injuries from the drop attacks and the thought of SUDEP, the risks from the odd packet of pork scratchings, as a treat for a child, who can eat no sugar, potatoes, rice, flour, milk, etc is fiddling while Rome burns!

MargoLovebutter · 14/08/2019 14:24

MontStMichel I'm really glad you found something that helped with your child's epilepsy.

Lots of posters have no idea about Keto. Firstly, it is a high fat diet, not a high protein diet and secondly it isn't really faddy at all, it is how must of us would have spent significant parts of the year eating before agriculture took off and there was increased access to grains and processing those grains to eat as bread.

Belenus · 14/08/2019 14:28

It's partly that, yes. It's also that the human digestive system is not a perfect engine. We won't extract the theoretical maximum number of calories from all foodstuffs. Some of it, to be blunt, we will shit out of our systems. You know how dogs do disgusting things like eat another animal's shit? It's because there's still something in the shit that they can extract from it.

I'm just at the doctor's now. Will report back.

*Once again, I'll post these three little words:

James Smith Academy

Please, please check him out. Please. You don't have to pay a single penny to gain vital knowledge of weight loss, maintenance, etc. And the best bit? You can eat carbs! Carbs aren't evil.*

Second this.

sheshootssheimplores · 14/08/2019 14:34

People who train get very into their macros for this very reason. A. calorie is not just a calorie.

1Wildheartsease · 14/08/2019 14:49

Sd183 are you advertising for this 'academy'??

KurriKurri · 14/08/2019 14:51

My neice was put on this diet for medical reasons, it made her feel very ill and she was being monitored closely by the hospital, It is also a pretty unpleasant way of eating - very high fat rich food and not in any way ressembling a normal way to eat (so onviously hard to stick to once you have lost wieght if you do). They took her off the diet fairly quickly.

RuffleCrow · 14/08/2019 14:53

I think a lot of this is based on our ignorance of hunter-gatherer cultures. Most remaining tribes don't eat meat, or animal fat, every day: it's a well earned reward for the arduous task of hunting your own food. On the occasions where meat is available it is a real 'event' for the group. The 'gatherer' aspect is where most nutrition comes from most days - edible roots, nuts, shoots, seeds and berries. This idea that every meal should be swimming in animal fat is only perhaps looking at traditional Inuit eating habits rather than hunter gatherers as a whole.

RosaWaiting · 14/08/2019 14:53

OP glad you are being seen

agree that some people are seeing this as a place to promote various things!!

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 14/08/2019 14:54

FFS stop abusing your body, it's practically screaming at you to stop this shit Angry

If you want to lose weight you need a calorie deficit - in a healthy way that provides your body with all the macro and micro nutrients it needs. Not bloody pork scratchings and salty water.

Sd183 · 14/08/2019 15:02

@1Wildheartsease nope just backing up what another poster said earlier in the thread (the part in the stars is a quote from said poster). It has really changed my outlook on dieting exercise and food and thought it would be nice to share that. That's all.

MargoLovebutter · 14/08/2019 15:02

How would humans have been able to consume enough edible roots, nuts, shoots, seeds and berries to survive RuffleCrow? Also, those items are seasonal - so not only would they have to collect enough to keep themselves alive, they'd also have to collect enough to dry out to eat through all the months that those items were not available!!!!!

3luckystars · 14/08/2019 15:09

Well I hope you are alright anyway, that's the main thing.

BrendasUmbrella · 14/08/2019 15:21

Any new way of eating can make you ill. Go back to the way you were eating before and you might right yourself. A lot of people have learned lessons from diet fanatics. For me it was even more extreme. Six days of water fasting and I felt really ill. The zealots on the fasting boards said it was something you "must push through". I think I might have actually died if I had tried that!

Moderation is the best way. And lots of veg.

wheelywheelynice · 14/08/2019 15:28

Keto diet will mess you up big time and it's especially bad for women because we have hormones that are affected and can take years to recover

SpoilsburyToastGirl · 14/08/2019 15:33

Please bear in mind whilst you're slagging off Keto, that what the OP has done is not actually recommended as part of a keto diet.

Keto is a high fat, moderate protein and low (rather than no) carb way of eating that alters the way the body fuels itself. So, rather than using glucose/carbs, it mostly burns fat.

In my experience this way of eating has completely stopped me from having low sugar shakes and that feeling that I need to eat immediately or I'll die. After an initial few days of carb flu (where your body essentially withdraws from glucose), I have had so much more energy, more focus and don't have that awful nagging hunger I've had on every single other diet I've ever been on. I've also lost a stone but to be honest, I would follow the diet for the other benefits alone, even if weight wasn't a happy side effect.

If anyone is interested in learning more about the Keto diet I can really recommend a fantastic documentary available on Netflix, called 'The Magic Pill' which explains how this way of eating aligns much more closely with how we used to eat, prior to the mechanisation of agriculture. It also interviews members of one of Australia's oldest aboriginal tribe, and looks at how their health has declined as they have gradually changed their diet due to western influences. I found it really interesting.
