WIBU to insist on this pram?

I really, really want a Bugaboo Fox. In the reviews it ticks all the boxes for me: sturdy, lightweight, all-terrain, great storage and obviously pretty damn gorgeous!!

BUT DH doesn't think we should spend a grand on something we'll only use for about three years and wants us to get something second hand. He doesn't understand that there are literally billions of types out there, and some of the cheaper brands are cheap for a reason!

Also he won't ever be pushing the damn thing - I don't drive, and will be doing A LOT of walking with it. We live in a hilly town with some rural areas, so just buying something at random from the Argos catalogue isn't going to cut it. It needs to be light, easily folded, have good storage and be able to tackle mud, uneven ground, hills and busy streets.

WIBU to just buy the Fox regardless? We're not rich by any means, but we're not poor either, we can afford it. Plus I expect my parents will want to cover half the cost. Or should I compromise and get something cheaper like the baby jogger city mini? I don't like that it's forward facing only, but it's another all-terrain and my husband is more likely to agree on that one...

I spent second hand fortune on the bugaboo Chameleon and I hate the damn thing.

Nat6999 · 14/08/2019 14:16

Buying an expensive bulky pram system is the mistake most new parents, including me make. It's great for the first couple of months, then you find it takes up most of the car boot, weighs a ton & is useless to go on buses & you invest in a Maclaren buggy that gets worn to death until your child is ready to start walking, meanwhile the pram you spent shed loads onis gathering dust & taking up space at home.

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver · 14/08/2019 14:17

the only problem is that if you buy a travel system, that includes the car seat - and you need that before your baby is here.

They are designed to evolve with the child, so you don't need to chuck them out once the baby is 6 months old, they last years!

LiveInAHidingPlace · 14/08/2019 14:20

"It's just a simple fact that many cheap prams don't compare with more expensive ones."

I worked for years as a salesperson for baby products and have been to scores of baby fairs.

You can get just as good prams from some off-brand makes as you can the expensive ones. In fact, half the time you can't tell the cheap copies apart from the real one, and a lot of the big companies will have lines that they sell cheaply under another name that are more or less the same as their main brand.

Don't be fooled by marketing. Look around first.

faelavie · 14/08/2019 14:21

I bought an iCandy Peach second hand for £200, it cost the original owner £1000 new, and is still perfect. Why not buy the pram you want second hand?

Spending a grand on a pram is nuts to me, I've spent less on cars! But, who am I to judge if you can afford it?

stucknoue · 14/08/2019 14:21

Consider a few things first. Does it fit in your boot? Do you walk places regularly (or are you more drive to places?) do you use public transport? Are you likely to have another child within 3 years?

It's a lot of money, if you don't drive, walk miles every day and use for 3 years then perhaps it's justified but I found that my expensive one took up too much boot space, was hard to carry onto the bus (still had steps then) and my kids are close in age anyway - at 6 months I bought a £10 buggy that got used most of the time, and then a £40 double buggy when number 2 came along.

Listen to your dp, the expensive brands are like designer clothes, they do the same job and often are made in the same factory, it's just about the label - at £200-300 you can get very good quality options

Bodicea · 14/08/2019 14:26

This is Mumsnet and it doesn’t go down well to spend money on a pram on here.
But I bought the bugaboo cameleon with my first born nearly 6 years ago and have no regrets.
It has got me through 3 babies and I have never once had a problem with it. The only thing I have replaced is the foam on the handle and got new sunshade second hand ( that was more for a change than anything). I love how smooth it is.

I did also purchase the city jogger double second hand which I do also rate. But I also have the sit on buggy board for the bugaboo which I use a lot and would choose that first. The city jogger is good on holidays and when one of the older ones will have to do a lot of walking. I plan to buy the city jogger single second hand in a year or so ( my third child is 1).
You need a travel system to begin with for the bassinet and to put the car seat on ( a lifesaver )
As you said you will be using most of the time so you get to choose.
I know a lot of people will say a foldable pushchair is fine but they feel so flimsy and low to the ground and I certainly wouldn't have put a new baby in one or even in my city jogger.
I have never actually bothered with a little Mclaren type pram.
You get what you pay for. I have seen friends buy cheaper prams and end up spending more than me because of the rate they have had to replace them and the struggles they have had with things going wrong.
Go for it. Disclaimer I don’t know anything about the fox- that wasn’t around when I got mine.

DMP123 · 14/08/2019 14:27

Don't do it, I used a travel system for 8 months then swapped over to a stroller as it was doing my head in. I wouldn't have spent a grand on a travel system anyway but so glad we bought second hand now. Xx

LaurieMarlow · 14/08/2019 14:29

Yeah. I've never understood why, but the MN ideal seems to be pulling a wrecked Maclaren out of a skip. Job done.

gigi556 · 14/08/2019 14:31

So I was in a situation whereby my mum wanted to buy us a pram and money was no object... but I insisted we didn't need one as a friend gave us there bugaboo chameleon. Another friend gave us a cheap graco one. We don't have a car and I walk everywhere and use the pram for all my shopping etc. In the end, I did not like either of them and ended up having my mom buy us an Uppababy Vista. If your husband doesn't want to spend a grand, I understand completely. But I think if you don't have a car, you should choose wisely.

nonamesareavailable · 14/08/2019 14:32

I have the Bugaboo fox and can confirm it is great! I love it. Ask me any questions you want. Definitely go for it!

Lipz · 14/08/2019 14:33

Look at it this way, if you only used it for 3 years it is only .91p per day :)

You can't beat a good buggy /pram. If it's good it'll last you years. If it's rubbish you'll be replacing it, costing you double.

Megan2018 · 14/08/2019 14:36

Mumsnet is full of tight arses that love a bit of misery.

If you dare to spend money on wine, only get one meal from a chicken and buy a pram because purely you like it you are a dreadful human being.

Instead you should wallow about in misery counting your pennies and planning how to LTB.

ChilliMum · 14/08/2019 14:37

I understand where you are coming from I had a quinny buzz with dd (pfb) and I loved it, it was absolutely decrepit by the time we finished with it we used it so much. However we have a dog and were doing a couple of miles all terrain every day.

With ds we had a lot less money and we got a cheaper different brand second hand one. It was awful, too heavy (I had a c-section) and I couldn't get it up and down with 1 hand - hugely important if you are getting on and off buses and you have baby and bags in 1 hand. As it was he preffered the sling so we used that and the travel system gathered dust in the garage.

I would go to a big mothercare/ john Lewis/ other and try out all the prams. Push them around the shop, lift them with 1 hand, can you put it up/ down with 1 hand while holding the car seat in the other hand? how big is the boot of your dh car - will it fit? Do you want a car seat with isofix or 1 you can strap into taxi / friends cars easily aswell? Do you have space to store it home?

I don't agree with pp I think your pram is an investment especially if you plan on having more than 1 child and it's worth spending for the right one. However I do agree that it's not about how it looks (although that is a bonus) or the brand but how it works for you. You will be using it every day you really do need to be happy with it.

Angelil · 14/08/2019 14:37

@caperplips this is why I chose mine though. I wanted one that would go from birth to age 3 without having to buy separate systems for every stage. I didn't have to spend £1k (/buy a Bugaboo) to achieve that though.

Angelil · 14/08/2019 14:40

@EllesBells123 I also walk for about that much a day and again...didn't need to spend a grand. Maybe a third that.

Propertyofhood · 14/08/2019 14:41

Expensive prams are such a swizz. We got given a Bugaboo Chameleon for free when my first was a baby, and let's just say I would have been extremely pissed off if I had spent £1000 on one new!

Shmithecat2 · 14/08/2019 14:42

Wrong place to post that question OP - its simply not done to buy anything brand new or over £69.82 for your PFB.

Fuck them. I've bought 3 new pushchairs (Urbo2, Bee5 and Yoyo+) for my one and only ds. I also bought a stroller for travel, some cheap shit from Mothercare which I absolutely hated. It now sits in Mils shed as a spare. I also bought 2nd hand baby joggers - a CMGT and Premier. The CMGT is fab, but I wanted to be able to parent face too, so got the Premier, which I love and still have. Ds is 4y in October but we still use it some days. I sold the bee5 and got the Yoyo. We travel/fly a lot and its worth its weight and price in gold.

And anyway, if it wasnt for wasteful mums like you and I buying new, there wouldn't be a 2nd market for the bloody sanctimommys on here to get their pushchairs from, would there? 🙄

TheCraicDealer · 14/08/2019 14:43

I don't get it either. It's the same sort of inverse snobbery that comes out on wedding threads. The MN ideal is to use a potato hula hoop as an engagement ring, spend less than £100 in total on your big day and still manage to invite everyone's partners. Even then you'd still get criticised for asking for money instead of having a gift list.

Sicktobloodydeath · 14/08/2019 14:43

@LaurieMarlow hahahahahahahahahaha that made me LOL 😂

helpmeiamatoad · 14/08/2019 14:44

If you have a grand to spend on a pram then you are rich. There are people on this planet who don’t even have access to clean water.

Gruntvsgunt · 14/08/2019 14:46

“If you have a grand to spend on a pram then you are rich. There are people on this planet who don’t even have access to clean water.”

What a pointless contribution to the thread....

Weighing in here as a nanny, not a mum! Two of my nanny families have the bugaboo fox, both first time parents, neither was "rich" but both could afford it and neither would change their prams now although there was great disagreements between both sets of parents before spending £1100 on it!
It's PERFECT for grass, gravel or tougher terrain than just pavements, both toddlers are extremely comfortable in their prams, the suspension barely jolts the baby, the seats and straps are generous (so was the amazing bassinet but they didn't use it for long! Giant babies! 😂) The handle goes from so low it's up to my hip and also to high enough it's perfect for me, who is 6 foot! I imagine you could add a buggy board and a tall toddler could comfortably stand on it and still be easy to push. Neither of the families bought it as a status symbol though I imagine many parents do and they just didn't feel the other prams had the look, feel or suspensions that they wanted 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think if I had a baby I'd also get the bugaboo fox however the wheels are enormously wide so can be tricky to manoeuvre on London transport! iCandy is pretty good though, solid and sturdy even second hand!

pelirocco123 · 14/08/2019 14:49

He doesn't understand that there are literally billions of types out there, and some of the cheaper brands are cheap for a reason!

On the other hand , items are expensive for a reason , and quite often , if its for a baby a wedding or a funeral , its expensive because there is always someone gullible enough to pay for a name
