To think it's autumnal enough to have a bonfire?

089ville · 12/08/2019 15:38

Lots of garden waste to get rid of. There was several wood burners I could smell burning this morning and it's down to 10-11 for the next few nights.

Would you think that's fine for a bonfire? I've covered what I want to burn and the rest of the ground should be wetish so good time to have a fire safely, no?

I think most of my neighbours have incinerators and seem to burn waste all year round.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 12/08/2019 15:46

YABU to think polluting the atmosphere any more than it is already is an ok thing to do.

Don’t you have a garden waste bin or a tip nearby? Our neighbours just got a hefty fine from the council for burning their garden waste.

WhatAGreatDay · 12/08/2019 15:47

If you live in a city/suburb/town then bonfires in your garden are very anti-social. Wood burners are also anti-social.

Can't you compost it? Or take it to the garden waste place at your local council?

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2019 15:48

Presumably the OP has checked their council bylaws.

089ville · 12/08/2019 15:57

It's hardly pollution the atmosphere and I bet you do things that are far worse? I don't even drive.

No law against it, I just want to not cause a nuisance. Half the houses around here have wood burners.

lmusic87 · 12/08/2019 15:57

I can't stand the smell and its not allowed in my council area.

Kids and adults are trying to enjoy the summer and don't need the fumes.

089ville · 12/08/2019 15:59

No one will be enjoying the summer when I burn it on a cold night.

The diselt fumes from a skip drop off or van would pollute more and be a bigger risk to people's health anyhow

as pagans we have already started our autumn and on / around sept 21st [mabon] are half way through it. so i'm already burning garden rubbish on dry evening after dark.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2019 16:04

Then why are you even asking, OP?

canyon2000 · 12/08/2019 16:04

Aren't we only half way through summer now?

PaddyF0dder · 12/08/2019 16:05

Don’t burn your waste like that. It’s bad for the environment, and thoughtless to your neighbours.

FurrySlipperBoots · 12/08/2019 16:06

Don't you have a brown bin? It goes for composting.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 12/08/2019 16:18

089ville - of course burning garden waste creates/adds to pollution Hmm

And I don’t drive a car either...

I don't know anyone in real life who would have an issue with their neighbours burning their garden waste at night. How is it any different to having a BBQ?

Only on MN!

I have never even heard of anyone burning garden waste. I didn't know this was a thing that people did.
However, I absolutely hate, hate, hate, hate people having BBQs during summer. Aside from just generally not understanding the logic, they're anti-social and stinky for neighbours.

So, no, probably there's not much difference between burning garden waste and having a BBQ but people absolutely do hate BBQs.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2019 16:28

Seriously? Confused

I'm 50 years old and all through those years up until present day people have burned their garden waste.

Granted a lot of people pay the council to take it away now but there are still plenty who won't pay the extra charge for the green bin collections.

aliensprig · 12/08/2019 16:28

Are you aware that garden waste is biodegradable/compostable? Bonfires are literally one of the pointless ways to dispose of rubbish, not to mention harmful to the environment.

Please don't burn stuff in your garden, it makes the surrounding area smell terrible and is horrible for your neighbours, not to mention those with asthma.

It is not the same as having a barbecue 🤦🏻‍♀️

Pinkout · 12/08/2019 16:30

Autumn? It’s not even mid August yet! Yes of course YABU, garden bonfires are anti social.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 18:35

As our council is now charging to take away garden waste, sales for incinerators have gone up. They are for sale everywhere, even in Asda. Now we compost grass and leaves, and burn sticks and branches. There is no more smoke than comes off a bbq, and neighbours don't seem to worry about bothering us with bbq smoke, to I'm not worried about bothering them with incinerator smoke.

LookingAtTheLovelyTrees · 12/08/2019 18:42

Why burn garden waste? Please compost it or put it in a wormery.

Burn it during the day. Don't see why you have to wait till night? It's done so often round us it's the norm. Especially since the Council started charging for taking away brown bins. It takes years for sticks and branches to compost. If you burn it, you can put the ashes on your garden, it's really good for the soil.

Bagofworries · 12/08/2019 19:07

stuckinthebathroom

I completely agree. I cannot abide bbq's and see very little difference between a bonfire and a bbq.
Bbq's have got to be one of the most antisocial things people in a built up area can have.
I never get any warning and dont see the point of them. I never have a bbq.

littlepaddypaws · 12/08/2019 19:10

pink we are pagans our year runs aug /sept/ oct are autumn, oct 31st is our new years eve, nov 1st new years day. nov /dec[mid winter festival/solstice and jan are our winter. feb / march and april spring, then may/june and july are summer.
mid summer is in june, says it all really.
i burn thick branches etc that take years to break down, and compost the rest, as i choose not to drive

CordeliaGoode · 12/08/2019 19:23

So inconsiderate.
