To think it's autumnal enough to have a bonfire?

Lots of garden waste to get rid of. There was several wood burners I could smell burning this morning and it's down to 10-11 for the next few nights.

Would you think that's fine for a bonfire? I've covered what I want to burn and the rest of the ground should be wetish so good time to have a fire safely, no?

@TabbyMumz completely agree with all you’ve said.

As for not understanding the logic of a barbecue or garden fire.. there are no words. No wonder people have so many problems living in peace with their neighbours these days.

ShhhBeQuiet · 12/08/2019 19:30

Bonfires are antisocial. I think it's better to find another way to get rid of the waste.

Fizzypoo · 12/08/2019 19:30

Ah the pagan system makes much more sense to me weather wise.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 19:55

"Bonfires are antisocial"..so is putting trampolines next to your fence, having your dog bark all day and night, having music on full blast and the windows open, and laughing and screaming in your garden at all hours of the night like my neighbour dies. Thoink I can live with doing the odd fire in an incinerator in my garden, that lasts about 20 mins at the most.

zeezee3 · 12/08/2019 19:59

@089ville

Nothing wrong with having a bit of a garden fire tbh.

And as it IS a bit Autumnal, and chilly, and people won't be outside (probably,) then go for it!

zeezee3 · 12/08/2019 20:00

Meant to say 'nothing wrong with having a bit of a garden fire occasionally...Maybe once or twice a year.

RozHuntleysStump · 12/08/2019 20:04

My windows are still open at night ...

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyNow · 12/08/2019 20:08

Are these antisocial polluting nuisance not banned already!

I don't know anyone in real life who enjoys the stench of smoke.
And no, it's never convenient for anyone. People have washing to do through the year, not just in July, people should be allowed to leave their windows opened without being smoked in!

It has been absolutely pouring with rain today, but it's now clear and I am not the only one to have put some washing outside late afternoon.

These antisocial behaviour should be regulated - once a month maybe, so at least we are warned and can keep our windows closed that day and night, but not more than that.

Many councils advise that neighbours can complain (and should) when bonfires are a statutory or polluting nuisance.

CassianAndor · 12/08/2019 20:08

Nope. Still mild enough for people’s windows to be open.

Bonfire smoke is really pervasive, worse than BBQ smoke.

Save it for an actual autumn evening, when it looks like it might rain but doesn’t, when people’s windows aren’t one, they aren’t likely to be sitting in their garden or have their washing out.

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyNow · 12/08/2019 20:11

Burn it during the day. Don't see why you have to wait till night?

to be fair, if you have to be an inconsiderate pest, it's not much worst during the day than it is at night. There are equally inconsiderate and inconvenient to your neighbours.

What a lovely thing to wake up to kids coughing in a bedroom stinking of smoke, who wouldn't enjoy that.... Hmm

Eatsshoootsandleaves · 12/08/2019 20:13

I have a neighbour who occasionally (only possibly 2 or 3x a year) burns goodness knows what in her garden. It's not garden waste because she doesnt do gardening. It stinks, and I have windows open all night and quite often put out washing in the evening if I know the night/morning is going to be dry, so it irritates me a lot. I wouldn't have a problem with it if she knocked the door and said 'hey I'm having a fire, take your washing in'. We don't realise until our house already stinks. If you have a neighbour like me, please let them know before you light the fire.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 20:18

In that same respect shouldn't neighbours let people know when they are going to have a party and have their music playing full blast for six hours.

Anotherusefulname · 12/08/2019 20:22

If you ask me the only socially acceptable evening for a bonfire is November 5th. The only environmently acceptable evening is never.
Go to the tip

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyNow · 12/08/2019 20:23

shouldn't neighbours let people know when they are going to have a party and have their music playing full blast for six hours.

they shouldn't have music playing full blast for 6 hours in the 1t place and you know it.

Now if you have bonfires to retaliate against noise nuisance, I can sympathise, even if it's very unfair for your other neighbours, but noise is just as bad.

But we agree that smoke is an antisocial nuisance, why would anyone want to bother their neighbours for no reason? That's beyond me how some people are so selfish and inconsiderate.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 20:31

I dont specifically have bonfires to retaliate against neighbours inconsiderate behaviour. I burn sticks and twigs in a small incinerator with the main purpose of getting rid of sticks and twigs. Burning it in my garden saves on petrol fumes getting to the tip! .if it upsets those particular neighbours that have no consideration for others at all then great, it's a win win. It more than likely wouldn't upset other neighbours as is a small incinerator and you don't get that much smoke from it.

SuzieQ10 · 12/08/2019 20:33

We still have all our windows open because it's so warm, so I'd say no not quite yet as your neighbours don't want their house to smell like bonfire.

Unless you have loads of space and it wouldn't make a difference to neighbours.

Malvinaa81 · 12/08/2019 20:39

August is not and never has been in Autumn.

And burning waste is polluting and unpleasant.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 20:44

To be fair, this year as we've had so much rain interspersed with hot weather, the plants are growing out of control so there will be more to burn. I'm not sure burning garden waste is limited to Autumn anyway? Bar b ques aren't limited to Summer?

Csleeptime · 12/08/2019 20:49

OP are you in the countryside or a busy street?

We live in the countryside and recently during the heat had 2 weeks straight of fires around us literally all day and all night. It was miserable as 2 little ones and couldn't open up or go in the garden. Extremely frustrating, however our neighbours think we are unreasonable for saying it bothers us!

Sometimes there is so much rubbish or a project as a one off that you have no choice, but if it's just general waste can you use a brown bin? It is much nicer for those around you and better for your health too. No smokey hair smell!

Screamanger · 12/08/2019 20:50

This time of year we burn paper and cardboard as we have stockpiled enough to last us through the winter. We burn wood as our primary heating source.

Sometimes there is nothing else todo with garden waste

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyNow · 12/08/2019 20:52

Unless your neighbours use old tires to fuel their bbqs, I am not sure how can anyone compare a bonfire to a regular bbq? Confused

It's about time bonfires are regulated and banned frankly.

Lotts123 · 12/08/2019 20:55

Our NDN has been burning rubbish (I don’t think it’s garden waste) all day! I found out when I opened the kitchen windows as I prepared the baby’s breakfast this morning, smelled lovely and quickly filled the whole house 🤨
I always believed that you could only light a Bonfire at lighting up time (when the street lights come on), which is changeable depending on time of year because of when it gets dark. Apparently this is not true and there aren’t any rules as to when you can light a Bonfire, not in our area anyway. I’m not a fan at anytime, but people can do as they please - definitely inconsiderate during the day though.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 20:56

"Unless your neighbours use old tires to fuel their bbqs, I am not sure how can anyone compare a bonfire to a regular bbq"

It depends on the bbq doesn't it. From recollection, you start the more basic ones with sticks and paper, then coal!!!! Surely that lets off as much smoke as an incinerator. I'm with you if it's just a gas one!

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 20:57

The last bbq I went to, it took over an hour to get the fire right, smoke everywhere. My incinerator is done and dusted in 20 mins.

TabbyMumz · 12/08/2019 20:59

As log burners are becoming more common, think they cause more harm to the environment than the odd bonfire or incinerator use.if anything should be banned, it's them.
