Just been looking on Rightmove at houses in St John's Wood Shock

What kind of people live here? Do any MNers live there? I am amazed at the house prices, even renting is at least a couple of grand a month!

OP posts:
Pipandmum · 12/08/2019 18:26

@applepieicecream they must have moved! They’re all listed as living there but website could very well be out of date.

applepieicecream · 12/08/2019 18:33

pipandmum I believe Damian Lewis lives in Tufnell Park and fairly sure Kate Moss is Highgate

CassianAndor · 12/08/2019 18:35

Sigh. I am fully aware that the bishops avenue is not in st John's wood, I drove down it for a nose not that long ago. But it's been raised in this thread so I just gave my opinion of it.

Davros · 12/08/2019 18:37

Ooh a thread where my expertise can shine!
I like visiting SJW to wanker watch but it is quite soulless and doesn't have the same community feel as HAMPSTEAD, PH, BP, Marylebone.
Ellsworthy road is NOT SJW and the American ambassador does not live there.
Hampstead is not stuffy as it still has the undercurrent of intellectuals, creatives, arty farty types which SJW does not. SJW is much more money orientated although there are actually a lot of council estates there behind the high street.
Yes, indeed, go too far into Belsize Park and it is not very nice at all. Nonsense. You must mean Gospel Oak maybe which is ok but is not BP.
BP residents go to Morrison's, it isn't all Pomona and the franchised Budgens

bettybiggestballs · 12/08/2019 18:53

Arhh this is bringing back memories, had three years in BP, living out of Pamona and Budgens - no kids plenty of spare cash. And the Matzo ball soup from Harry Morgan's was a real weekend treat

Davros · 12/08/2019 19:20

Panzers is worth the existence of SJW on its own

ssd · 12/08/2019 19:46

I don't actually remember any names, it was the 80s, could be famous people but I never knew.
I did end up nannying for a pop star manager who moved in rarified circles but was a total cow to me.

Al2O3 · 12/08/2019 19:50

The US ambassador did live in Ellsworthy Road in the 1989’s @Davros

That is a fact.

Davros · 12/08/2019 19:51

Maybe in the 1980s then. But he/it lives in Regent's Park now. I bow to your superior knowledge. I've got a strange urge to go to SJW now. Has anyone tried the Soutine? I couldn't get a booking a couple of weeks ago Sad

ssd · 12/08/2019 19:54

My nanny friend ended up working in the American school, the prizes in the school raffles were amazing.

Leftiefterson · 12/08/2019 20:02

Harry Morgan’s is amazing! I think Belsize or P-Hill would be more attractive options and most definitely more affordable. I don’t think SJW is that bad really. For the ASL cohort it’s great because they have a home from home.

stclair · 12/08/2019 20:03

I beg to differ! SJW is a great place with a great community feel.
Davros - Ivy better than Soltine 😉

Davros · 12/08/2019 20:04

Thanks. We've done the Ivy and enjoyed it. Wanted to try the Soutine but it was booked out so had to go to the Delaunay!!!!

stclair · 12/08/2019 20:09

Have you been to L’Aventure on Blenheim Terrace? Very romantic, not soulless like the rest of SJW apparently 😁

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 12/08/2019 20:11

... rich people.

HeronLanyon · 12/08/2019 20:13

I have friends living in St. John’s Wood. Very expensive. Rather boring frankly - although it depends on what you/family are looking for obvs. Some absolutely lovely houses. Other areas have similar but more interesting

HeronLanyon · 12/08/2019 20:13

Oops more interesting locale.

icecreamsundae32 · 12/08/2019 20:16

A friend used to live there, her mum was a barrister. Not as fancy as that house tho but for 28,500,00 I'd be wanting a swimming pool at the very least lol!!

HRTea · 12/08/2019 20:42

I know SJW well. Whilst it's true that there are a number of Jewish people living in North London including SJW I can't help but feel uncomfortable that a single religion has been mentioned a number of times. No one has said there are Christians who live there or Muslims who live there - both of which are also true. Statements like "rich Jewish families" make me feel uneasy - what about rich Christian families or rich Muslim families? These are statements one rarely hears. And yes before you pile in, for obvious reasons in the current climate it's not the same as saying rich American families.

Having said that, both Harry Morgan's and Panzers are great. Smile

HRTea · 12/08/2019 20:46

Also comments like "no English families. High Arabic and Jewish population...". Since when were the Jewish population not English??

I can assure you I'm both

HRTea · 12/08/2019 20:47

(and no, I don't live there)

stclair · 12/08/2019 20:56

Quite right HRT

Davros · 12/08/2019 22:02

I haven't been to L'Aventure or the famous Oslo Court. Both on the list. Love going to Lord's which is one of the best things about SJW

Al2O3 · 12/08/2019 23:16

And seeing Kate Bush in Rossetti’s.
Or Barry Manilow get out of his small BMW convertible near the Star & Garter.
The best was the King’s Troop moving out of the barracks on parade. Surprised nobody from SJW mentions that.
Oh, and the most enormous chandelier in the Regent’s Park mosque, visible and glittering in the darker months.

Davros · 12/08/2019 23:43

I remember Rosetti, we used to love it there. I didn't see the King's Troop leave but I knew about it. We used to hear them regularly trotting round the local roads and see the aftermath 💩
