Just been looking on Rightmove at houses in St John's Wood Shock

What kind of people live here? Do any MNers live there? I am amazed at the house prices, even renting is at least a couple of grand a month!

Belsize Park? I once unintentionally caused grave offence by saying 'X Road in Belsize Park? Isn't that in Kilburn?' Which it wasn't, I was wrong, but no coming back from that one.Blush

There’s a really great Jewish deli there, Harry Morgan’s. DH would love to live there, I’m against for what our money would (or wouldn’t rather) get us.

PooWillyBumBum · 12/08/2019 11:40

A family member lives there. Bought his four bed town house in 1969 for £35,000. Now worth ££££ but is neither here nor there as he intends to die in it.

He is Jewish as are a lot of his neighbours and they all seem to have come from other affluent cities on the continent. All seemingly normal but bankers, business owners etc to afford those sorts of housing costs.

I like Belsize Park High Street my hairdressers are there. I do worry about how people do their normal grocery shopping though. Id hate not to have a Tesco or something on my doorstep. What i love is that they have an offy were the wine is on display for you to help yourself. And they have tables outside. It wouldnt last five minutes in my neck of the woods.

DontBeOffensive · 12/08/2019 14:35

Aw I used to go to school on Ellsworthy road. Makes for great memories reading that.

CassianAndor · 12/08/2019 14:40

my neighbours (mixed race gay couple) lived there and really didn't like it at all, I think they found it pretty soulless.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/08/2019 14:48

There isn't anywhere like SJW up in the North I don't think

In northern England? Of course there is. As well as the Cheshire Golden Triangle, there's also another one in Yorkshire.

BlooperReel · 12/08/2019 14:56

I know someone who lives there, he is a chairman of a private finance firm, and is minted basically.

Lovely properties but the prices are ludicrous.

CruCru · 12/08/2019 14:57

I have quite a few friends who live there. It is very popular with Americans because the American School in London is there. My friends’ children all speak with American accents even though they’ve never lived in the US.

escapade1234 · 12/08/2019 15:05

It’s a very strange spot. I know because I live very close by. The “villagey” high street is a complete misnomer. It’s soulless as hell. Some very big houses cheek by jowl with council estates. It’s quite green for London and right up by Regents Park.

No English families. High Arabic and Jewish population and many, many short-stay Americans because the American School is there.

DontCallMeShitley · 12/08/2019 15:09

Bishops Avenue is not about nice houses though, it is about cost and showing off. Many of those houses are left empty for long periods of time while the owners are at home elsewhere.

DontCallMeShitley · 12/08/2019 15:13

@EssentialHummus oh yes, I used to go to Harry Morgans on the way home. Much nicer than Blooms.

Used to drop stuff into the dress agency to sell.

Richoux too, until about year ago, on a weekend.

Nice stuff in the charity shop as well.

Memories, nice ones.

CassianAndor · 12/08/2019 15:20

The Bishop's Avenue is horrible.

Bigmango · 12/08/2019 15:22

My exes parents used to. It’s not actually that great a place to live. Far prettier areas of London with same kind of properties. I love Hampstead and Primrose Hill. Holland Park has beautiful streets but I’m strictly a norf landan girl...

EssentialHummus · 12/08/2019 15:40

cassian that’s in n2, this is nw8.

magicgirl · 12/08/2019 15:45

Kate Moss used to live there. On Melina Place and Damien Lewis did too.

Daniel Craig rented there for a while too.

magicgirl · 12/08/2019 15:46

LOVED the chicken soup in Harry Morgan's!

FactoryEmblem · 12/08/2019 15:53

@Pipandmum Damian Lewis lived in Tufnell Park when I lived there, he must have upgraded!!

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/08/2019 16:05

Just saw a flat for sale in Hampstead priced at 2 million

That is cheap. I am on the outskirts of London and there is a flat for sale for over £10 million .

It is a big flat

CassianAndor · 12/08/2019 16:12

that’s in n2, this is nw8

what is? The Bishop's Avenue? It isn't.

EssentialHummus · 12/08/2019 18:04

It is cassian. Here you go, from Wikipedia: The Bishops Avenue
Avenue in London, England
DescriptionThe Bishops Avenue, London N2, connects the north side of Hampstead Heath at Kenwood, Hampstead to East Finchley and is on the boundary between the London Boroughs of Barnet and Haringey. It is considered to be one of the wealthiest streets in the world. Wikipedia

EssentialHummus · 12/08/2019 18:04

I mean, the top of it might be something other than n2, but not nw8.

ErickBroch · 12/08/2019 18:13

My best friend's close relatives live there, he is a musician in a very famous band. Beautiful house, they even have a piano as a gift from Elton John! Every time I go i just want to sneak off and take photos haha

zackly · 12/08/2019 18:15

Icecreamsoda99 · 12/08/2019 18:21

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but always makes me think of the Rolling Stones song Play With Fire "Your mother she's an heiress, owns a block in Saint John's Wood" Grin
