To think it’s NOT racist to not like food from another culture?

Hi all. Just wanting to get some opinions on this!

On a Facebook group where people rate each other’s food, someone recently posted a picture of some Indian food their Indian friend had cooked. Someone commented ‘Yuk’. Another person then accused this commenter of being racist because they said the food looked disgusting.

Whilst I disagree with the commenter (I thought it looked nice!) I don’t necessarily think it’s racist to think a certain dish from another culture looks/is disgusting. I mean, I don’t like sushi but I’m certainly not racist against the Japanese.

Am I wrong here?

If someone posted a picture of moussaka my reaction would be yuk. But that is because I can't stand aubergines, not because it's Greek.

rude but by no means racist are we no saying we or not allowed to say we don't like food from different cultuers ?
Hate curry with a passion smell texture and spicy wouldn't consider myself racist .

@Cherrysoup Oh yes, I’m well aware. However, the person making the ‘racist’ comment seemed deadly serious.

That's a shame, @GimmeCaffeine, it's normally good for a laugh on there, although a mate clocked one of my comments and messaged me about how people can seriously think their food looks good. I was like Confused should I explain to her it's facetious?!

Of course it’s not racist to say you don’t like a particular food, but people do use a country’s food to make digs. I remember Jade Goody calling Shilpa Shetty ‘Shilpa Poppadom’ and saying things about her curry fingers.

I think it's always a good indicator of racism tbh. Quite random, but I've also been watching '4 Weddings' reruns recently and noticed a lot of barely concealed racism on there and it all starts when they find out what the menus are.

Not at all racist. Utterly baffling that some people on here think it is.

Food isnt racism. I dont like burnt toast, does that make me racist ?.
I dont think so. Oh its wholemeal bread too, hahaha

"Yuck" must be the politest comment ever made on RMP. I followed it for a short while but it quickly became quite samey.

Deadringer · 12/08/2019 14:22

It's very fucking rude, but not racist.
