To think it’s NOT racist to not like food from another culture?

Hi all. Just wanting to get some opinions on this!

On a Facebook group where people rate each other’s food, someone recently posted a picture of some Indian food their Indian friend had cooked. Someone commented ‘Yuk’. Another person then accused this commenter of being racist because they said the food looked disgusting.

Whilst I disagree with the commenter (I thought it looked nice!) I don’t necessarily think it’s racist to think a certain dish from another culture looks/is disgusting. I mean, I don’t like sushi but I’m certainly not racist against the Japanese.

Am I wrong here?

Very childish. It really annoys me when adults say they that don’t like vegetables or they don’t like Chinese food etc... I mean how do you know? Have you tried every Chinese dish out there? They’re just childish idiots.

MidnightMystery · 11/08/2019 18:18

To be honest Curry doesn't look the most appealing but it's my favourite food!

I don't think it's racist not liking a different cultures food though, rude yes but not racist.

Yabbers · 11/08/2019 18:19

I don’t like any spicy food. That rules out most foods from quite a few different cultures. I don’t think that’s racist.

Rude to say ‘yuck’ but not racist.

EskewedBeef · 11/08/2019 18:21

No, it's not racist. It's someone not understanding that 'Rate My Plate' is a place to be creatively humorous about food that usually (and deliberately) looks awful.

Mydogmylife · 11/08/2019 18:22

@Boysey45

Not sure where the Scottish connection comes? Linda McCartney is American ?

LonelyGir1 · 11/08/2019 18:22

It's not necessarily racist to not like food from another culture, but that's not what the person who said "yuck" said.

The comment could have been meant either way depending on the context (and the poster's FB profile! Grin).

Aberhonddu · 11/08/2019 18:23

I was just about to post the same mydog

RiddleyW · 11/08/2019 18:24

I’m reversing my position now I understand it was posted to be reviewed. It’s not racist if the whole point is to criticise the food.

EskewedBeef · 11/08/2019 18:28

I don't like Linda McCartney's vegetarian foods, I think they taste synthetic and greasy. Does this make me racist against the scots?

I don't like McDonald's food. Does this make me racist against Scots and clowns?

Whatsername7 · 11/08/2019 18:29

I don't think it is racist. It is just food. I absolutely detest the taste of Chinese mushrooms - they are my food hell. Equally, Im a vegetarian and looking at a rare steak makes me feel physically sick. I'd probably say 'yuk' to either of those things without any thought to the nationality the dish belonged too.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 11/08/2019 18:30

It’s rude to say “Yuk” unless your a toddler that’s not yet learnt manners and don’t know many words.

It’s not racist to say “Yuk” how can it have racial undertones? Rude, absolutely. Racist, no.

It’s also not racist to not like food from different countries you’ve visited for example, it’s personal taste

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 11/08/2019 18:31

Generally i think its a hard one to tell, its not inharently racist no, possiably immature and probably rude, but without any more complicated information racist no.
However, if tjis person has prehaos a history of commenting yuck on every "foreign" dish thats pictured then maybe it does have racist undertone.
Even then its posiable that thwy just dont like indian food, i don't like tex mex doesnt make me racist just i'm not great with chilli. However i probably would just skip the dish and not comment on it. But look at the number of people that will open a thead on here just to tell people their not botheted about the topic of the thread. Some people just have to commsnt on everything.

As for mn thinking "yuck is AF" wow, i suspect its fairly mild certianly even on here expressing dislike through the word yuck is mild. I havent seen rate my plate seems like a bizaree consept. But given that on this is a site that uses c and f words the number of people calling yuck rude is weird.

GrouchoMrx · 11/08/2019 18:32

Scots?

You are making a fool of yourself though.

katseyes7 · 11/08/2019 18:32

l'm far from racist my closest friend at work is Asian) but the smell of curry and spicy food makes me heave. Also, l'm severely allergic to chilli, so l wouldn't even dare risk it! My ex and his daughter loved it, but only had it when l wasn't there.
Each to their own, eat what you like and don't criticise other people's food. l love anchovies. l once posted a photo of an anchovy and olive pizza on twitter, and someone asked "are they slugs?"

Benjispruce · 11/08/2019 18:35

It's very rude but not racist. Although, the poster may well be racist as well as rude.

isseywithcats · 11/08/2019 18:37

we go to a local buffet indian restaurant because the food is fab but if i open a lid and i can see bell peppers in the dish i go yuk and put the lid down fast because i cant stand peppers not because im racist, and usually if someone posts a picture of curry it dosent present very well a friend of mine (SN) posts his dinner on facebook every night and some of the curries look like slop but i know the resaurant he gets them from and they are very tasty to eat

Owlypants · 11/08/2019 18:37

I didn't realise you could be racist towards food. I don't really like pasta but it doesn't make me racist. Seems everything is racist now

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 11/08/2019 18:40

I said Yuck when watching my niece dip mcdonalds chips into her milkshake. I don't give a fuck if its english, american, japanese, indian, whatever. In my opinion banana milkshake coated fries are disgusting.

Peakypolly · 11/08/2019 18:46

I’ve had Indian friends say British food is bland and boring is that racism?
No, that is ignorance (and unheard of from my Indian and Bangladeshi friends), horseradish and English mustard anyone?

ClashCityRocker · 11/08/2019 18:48

It's rate my plate.

The poster probably said 'yuk' because it looked like the contents of a toilet after lock up time rather than having a deep rooted prejudice about Indian cuisine.

Although it's not particularly racist to dislike a particular cuisine... And in most cases its shorthand for 'I don't like this cuisine as it is served in my locality'. I struggle with sushi, yes, I am sure if I tried every single example there may be some I do like, but I know I don't like enough of it chose it for a meal out, for example.

silentpool · 11/08/2019 18:50

What a daft notion! Of course it's not racist.

Pud2 · 11/08/2019 18:50

It seems that many people don’t understand the meaning of the word racist and I come across this a lot, particularly amongst the young. It’s a word that is banded about far too easily.

Racism means that someone is making a derogatory comment linked to somebody’s race with an implication that their own race is superior. Therefore, simply saying that a plate of Indian food is ‘yuk’ is absolutely not racist. There is no reference to race or implication that their own race is superior.

gowgow · 11/08/2019 18:59

I remember the "Goodness Gracious Me" sketch, where Sanjeev Baskar etc went out for an "English", & yelled "more bland" at the waiter.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/08/2019 19:02

Since when has saying yuck had racist undertones? I don't even consider it that rude a word tbh. It is a word more associated with young children though. As for being racist to say I don't like Chinese food, no its not racist even if you haven't tried all Chinese food, it's just a generalisation because you haven't liked the stuff you have tried so are loath to try any more.

cheeseandbiscuitss · 11/08/2019 19:02

Commenting yuk on a plate of food is rude. It is not racist 🤦‍♀️
