Summer hols day out, theatre and hamleys.

Having fun trying all the toys on display and v small budget to buy a toy.

Older dd goes to lady for hand tattoo. I asked younger if she wanted one she was shy and said no. However once older has one she wants one. So she gets in position and very curtly lady says 'no. Its not a freebie for all children it's a demo. I can't do another child' no smiles, no kindness and she looked as hard as nails as dd face crumpled and starts to cry.

Not a big cry! In the past they have always dine both dc, in hamleys and harrods.
And we have actually brought the set into the past but it's the fun and part of the toy shop experience to have something done there!

Not the experience I expected from hamleys of all places. Or was she right!

YANBU she is a miserable old cow and in the wrong job.

HawaiianLion · 12/08/2019 18:54

Oh get over yourselves you lot! Bet if it was your kid you’d be fuming!
OP YANBU... Takes a cold hearted witch to speak to a child like that, and I bet if her boss was watching OP would not have had the same experience!
Hamleys pay their floor staff to give the children a positive interactive experience with the toys, purchase or no purchase. Reasoning for this is so that children will ask their parents to return to the store. Put plainly, that girl sucks at her job.

Not really. Very happy in my job with the shopping public, Many of my customers are very lovely. The op asked for opinions and has pages and pages of them. Some saying she was unreasonable and some saying she was perfectly reasonable,
You are perfectly entitled to your opinion and I am to mine.

How many times did you expect your ds to be shown, Alex?

AmateurSwami · 12/08/2019 18:59

FWIW, yanbu

nuxe1984 · 12/08/2019 18:59

She's wrong. She's being paid to give free tattoos (obviously in the hope parents buy the kit). It's not her place to decide who does and doesn't have a tattoo. She just does each child in the line til she finishes work.

Vynalbob · 12/08/2019 19:00

YNBU
Those shops (harrods and hamleys) 'sell' themselves on being the whole experience if that's now the norm they have lost their only USP. Write an email stating your disappointment. If I were demonstrating even at a local fayre I would not treat siblings differently.

Theluckynumberthree · 12/08/2019 19:10

I think I would have asked to speak to the manager, surely they can’t just pick and chose children as they wish... that would cause all sorts of issues!

FirstTimeToddlerMum · 12/08/2019 19:12

You had a demo, you all seen how it worked so there was no need for her to do it again?

You are obviously struggling with the fact that a lot of people think YABU.

PhilipJennings · 12/08/2019 19:14

How funny, I opened this thread thinking about the glitter tattoo lady in Hamleys.

We had a less than ideal experience at that stall on Wednesday last week, OP. YANBU

Catsinthecupboard · 12/08/2019 19:15

She's a grouchy old bat.

HeadintheiClouds · 12/08/2019 19:17

Did she refuse to tattoo your entire family, Philip?

The Mind Boggles

whatacarryon2018 · 12/08/2019 19:32

I did this job many years ago. I demo'd glitter tattoos in what used to be the "tantrum" lounge in hamleys. I was on £30 a day for ten hours and then commission of £1.50 per item sold AFTER I sold the first 20 units. It was hellish. You're being VUnreasonable. It's not a freebie.

Sb74 · 12/08/2019 19:33

I think those posters that think the op is being unreasonable don’t understand about marketing and brand value and probably also don’t frequent places that provide for those with high expectations. The op is being completely reasonable and if I had been in that position I would have summoned the manager immediately and gone mad. Those that don’t understand this situation cannot have visited anything more than toysrus.

Sb74 · 12/08/2019 19:34

...if you don’t like these jobs then don’t do them.

HeadintheiClouds · 12/08/2019 19:34

Completely incorrect assumption there.

Moomin8 · 12/08/2019 19:37

I would agree with this. What kind of twat makes a 6 year old cry in a toy shop for whom they are a representative?

Sb74 · 12/08/2019 19:37

You clearly don’t understand to think the op is being unreasonable. It’s a shit way to treat customers and future customers and If I was the store manager I would have gone mad too.

Ivestoppedreadingthenews · 12/08/2019 19:38

YANBU! Staff trying to sell to families shouldn’t behave like that, regardless of the policy. It’s bad for their brand. I used to work in a toy shop as a Christmas job as even as a temp we had drilled into us that we weren’t just operating tills we were selling the fun of a toy shop. Otherwise you could just buy it all on amazon! Write/tweet them, I don’t think they will have wanted this approach.

Sb74 · 12/08/2019 19:38

... aimed at heads the clouds

EmpressJewel · 12/08/2019 19:41

YABU. As others have said, it is a demo, not a freebie.

Aridane · 12/08/2019 19:44

I would’ve said in a loud voice, ‘you’ve just missed out on a sale now.’

It's not Pretty Woman FFS Grin

TitsInAbsentia · 12/08/2019 19:46

Where's the YABU button when you want one?
Whilst the shop worker may not have been all smiles and the 'oh go on then' that you wanted she probably wasn't quite as bad a you are saying, otherwise you'd have probably called for her supervisor etc. Chances are you wound your child up so much to get one that you made the situation worse. NOTHING in life is free.....
