DS is constantly caked in the stuff of SPF 50 and yet he is always burnt as soon as the sun is shining. Now DD1 and DD2 were both exposed for the same amount of time yesterday with the same suncream and neither of them are even slightly tinged. Now Ds had three times as much cream is burnt.
Ok so he has red hair but DD1 is blonde!!!

Some people are more sensitive to the sun that others. If he is always burning despite the spf50 then he needs either a higher factor or to wear clothes that cover him up.

Don't think you can say its the suncream not working when it clearly works for your other 2. If his skin is more sensitive you need to take extra precautions with him

Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:28

Alicet he does stay as covered as possible but he is a typical little boy who is running around getting hot. Like today he has on a sunhat, football kit including socks pulled up and suncream everywhere yet can still see him going redder.[is that a word?]Didnt know you could get a higher factor suncream, problem I have is that Aveeno cream is the only one not to bring him out in a rash

i have red hair and always burn easily cause im so pale skined! i use that suncream on me and dd and anyone in reaching distance whilst im slopping it on!
i ap`ply 30mins before going out in the sun then every 1-2hrs as i know i will burn otherwise and dd too!

meandmy · 03/08/2007 14:33

sorry i have sultan factor 50+

Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:34

meandmyI put cream on him every hour which he does get fed up with!!

OP posts:
Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:35

just checked and the aveeno is factor 55?

OP posts:
alicet · 03/08/2007 14:35

Nemo - sorry just reread my last post and wasn't trying to sound sancitmonious! Or imply you weren't trying to cover your son up!

Pretty sure you can get higher factors in some brands. Can also get complete sun block - sorry don't remember who makes it though.

Some skin types are such that they will always burn and never tan and you have to be doubly careful with these - sounds like this is your ds.

Good luck!

Ultra Sun is about the only thing that protects DD1 all day. She's white as a lilly w/light brown/ginger/blonde hair.

CarGirl · 03/08/2007 14:36

unfortunately you need to keep him out of the sun completely between 12-3pm then - very difficult I know. It's not to do with the colour of his hair its to do with the fairness of his skin - I'm pale with red hair but I know other people with much fairer skin than me and I do actually tan if I'm careful!

Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:37

expat where do you get that from?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/08/2007 14:38

I got it in John Lewis, Nemo, and it does cost a lot but it's extremely concentrated so a little goes a long way.

Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:39

cargirl I do try to keep them in the shade but of course on a day out or if he is playing with his friends it is hard to do.
I obviosuly dont want him to tan as my nan died from various cancers including skin cancer in march.

OP posts:
CarGirl · 03/08/2007 14:42

Have you tried P20 to see if he's allergic to that. It's expensive but lasts all day. At the moment he could just be getting redder as he's very hot????

If he is visibly red due to sunburn that is very serious (speaking as someone with 2nd/3rd dgree sunburn as a chld who couldn't walk for 5 days)

CarGirl · 03/08/2007 14:43

What a nightmare for you - bribe him with TV watching?

Bear · 03/08/2007 14:43

aaarrgh - just spent a fortune on tubes of Aveeno for our holiday as, like you, it's the only one that DD and DS don't react to

Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:43

cargirl
he does go red when he is hot but the past 3 days the redness has remained. He has been in bed having a snooze this afternoon so hasnt been out since this morning. He isnt bright red like he was yesterdya but his skin is still burnt!

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 14:44

I tend to wear clothes rather than suncream. Loose clothes are just as cool really.

Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:44

bear the aveeno works for both the girls as
DD1 isnt even in the slightest pinky nevermind red, I just think it is DS.

OP posts:
meandmy · 03/08/2007 14:46

you could try the coloured stuff.
i have the spray on stuff which is supper quick!
quick enough to slop on my running 14mo!

Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:47

btw bear pmsl at your simpsons character..Dh did himself on one of those and he looks not too unlike Homers cousin..lol

OP posts:
Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:47

Ds is nearly 4 and more than willing to wear the suncream so that isnt a issue.

OP posts:
Nemo2007 · 03/08/2007 14:49

expat is this the cream?

well the burn will take days to go. Ideally you need white cotton longish sleeved tops and trousers for him to wear over the cream - 100% cotton loose stuff - white will help reflect the rays - it is a complete nightmare for you, other than that I wonder if there is anything you can get pescribed???

prettybird · 03/08/2007 14:51

Ultrasun does a Seinsitive SKin version which might be OK. I prefer it to P20 becasue it protects against both UVA and UVB.

it is difficult to get hold of though - I also get it from John Lewis, but last time I went (day beofre I went on holiday) it didn't have the Sensitive Skin stuff I wanted

Have look at it here www.ultrasun.co.uk/
