So I'm getting rid of my old sofa.
I organised for someone to come out to collect and recycle it for £80.
They came out and said they couldn't get it through the living room door and demanded I paid them the £80 anyway.
I said well they got it in so it must get out.
The door hasn't shrunk
Anyway they've said they going to take me to court for not paying.
Was aibu to not pay ?

YANBU

HopelessLayout · 10/08/2019 15:54

"They got it in"?

Who is "they"?

If it wasn't you then you don't know how the sofa came in. They might have had to remove the door or assemble it in situ or bring it through the window.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/08/2019 15:55

YANBU they are trying their luck

Applejack5 · 10/08/2019 15:57

If you know for sure it got in through the door and not a window taken out etc. then YANBU.

campingaddict · 10/08/2019 15:59

They've travelled to you expecting to receive £80, yes I think you should still pay them! It's not their fault if they can't get it out! You should have made sure before you booked them! Would you go to work and not get paid??

Lazypuppy · 10/08/2019 16:00

Was it the same company who got the sofa in who was getting the sofa out?

IsobelRae23 · 10/08/2019 16:01

You should be paying them something! No one would be able to get ours through the doors- as they came in through the window!

CalmFizz · 10/08/2019 16:04

Did you witness how they got the sofa in? Was it through the door or another entry? Was it brought in in one piece?

SchrodingersMeowth · 10/08/2019 16:05

You should definitely have paid them something unless it was the exact people who got it in who couldn’t remove it.

They’ve still worked to try and remove it.

ScreamingValenta · 10/08/2019 16:05

What does it say in the T&Cs for the recycling service?

Ellabella989 · 10/08/2019 16:06

I probably would have paid 50% of the fee unless it was the same company who put the sofa in the house (i’d pay nothing if this was the case)

TastingTheRainbow · 10/08/2019 16:07

Why wouldn’t you just get someone to remove the window and they could have carried out their job of removing the sofa? If it was being recycled why couldn’t it have been broken down and removed?

Seems unfair that they lose money because you didn’t check the sofa would fit.

I also don’t think you’ll have a chance in court unless you can absolutely prove the sofa case in via the door in one piece. It’s not unusual to build them in situ or remove a pane of glass.

Schoolchoicesucks · 10/08/2019 16:08

I don't think you should have paid them £80 - presumably some of that would be to cover the costs of legitimately disposing of it - which they haven't now incurred. £20 for their trouble tops.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/08/2019 16:08

Why would you pay someone money for nothing, unless there’s a call out fee specified at the beginning.
Also did you see them try and get it out the room, if not that’s the best scam going

MeredithGrey1 · 10/08/2019 16:09

I probably would have paid 50% of the fee unless it was the same company who put the sofa in the house (i’d pay nothing if this was the case)

Agreed. Unless there are any other details not mentioned (like you told them in advance it would need dismantling and they wouldn’t do it once they arrived etc)

pinkyperkypoo · 10/08/2019 16:09

It's a upstairs flat so it deffo didn't come in the window.
It's a 2 seater sofa so not exactly huge.
I was there when I moved in and they turned it on its side and took it in that way.

OP posts:
Violetroselily · 10/08/2019 16:11

Did you explain to them how it got in?

Seeingadistance · 10/08/2019 16:12

Did they even try to get it out?

Gormanuary · 10/08/2019 16:14

...

"PIVOT!"

Sorry.

MeredithGrey1 · 10/08/2019 16:15

I was there when I moved in and they turned it on its side and took it in that way.

Assuming you told them this, it now sounds like they didn’t even try? Because if they had I assume they’d have managed it? In which case I wouldn’t pay.

LadyRannaldini · 10/08/2019 16:16

Wasn't there a Friends episode How to move a sofa? Usually if you remove all the removable cushions etc, stand it upright and put the L shape of the sofa through the door, swinging it around the door frame it'll go.

Cantthinkofanythingrightnow · 10/08/2019 16:16

They won't take you to small claims don't worry it wouldn't be worth it for them to pay the legal fees.

grownup2 · 10/08/2019 16:17

Why not partially dismantle or even saw/hack a bit off? If it's just going for disposal....

AppleKatie · 10/08/2019 16:18

Two seater sofa? Upstairs flat? Didn’t even try?

No I wouldn’t pay them either. They didn’t fancy carrying it down the stairs, that’s not your problem (assuming you told them you live upstairs).

GreenTulips · 10/08/2019 16:19

Me and my teenager managed to get a three seater out the door (and a two seater) no problems.

New sofa was bigger and DH managed it with the delivery driver.

I wouldn’t pay
