So I'm getting rid of my old sofa.
I organised for someone to come out to collect and recycle it for £80.
They came out and said they couldn't get it through the living room door and demanded I paid them the £80 anyway.
I said well they got it in so it must get out.
The door hasn't shrunk
Anyway they've said they going to take me to court for not paying.
Was aibu to not pay ?

You would be surprised at the amount sofas that are hoisted through windows at higher levels than your flat.

For what is worth that sofa could have come in pieces or through the windows. The fact it was left there before you moved in makes me think it was the latter otherwise it would have been removed.

So yes, I think you should have checked and you should pay, you hired them to move a sofa through the door, not to defy the laws of physics.

Pipandmum · 10/08/2019 17:01

@tanmayeix she says she was there when they moved it in on it’s side. Assuming if it came in that way it could go out that way is not unreasonable.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/08/2019 17:03

YANBU if you were there when it arrived and know how it get there.

Bookworm4 · 10/08/2019 17:04

Why are you paying them to recycle your sofa? Is it that they refurb and sell on or just dispose of at recycling centre?

bouncingraindrops · 10/08/2019 17:07

You got them to come out, it's up to you to check the size of your sofa. You should pay.

What do you mean check the size? The sofa went IN the door. How would measuring the sofa make it any bigger then it was when it arrived Confused

bouncingraindrops · 10/08/2019 17:09

OP WATCHED it come in through the door!

bouncingraindrops · 10/08/2019 17:09

Also I wouldn't pay them a penny. Regardless of how far they travelled. They don't do the job.

Lozz22 · 10/08/2019 17:11

When my old settee was delivered from land of leather, I'd taken a days unpaid leave off work. 2 delivery men turned up, never even took the settee off the truck and proceeded to tell me there was no way it was going through the front door and that unless I agreed to having someone come and take the living room window out they were taking it straight back. Told them I wasn't haven't the window taken out. Off they went this is after they tried to demand the £50 delivery fee. Told them not a chance in hell was I paying it. Phoned land of leather up put a complaint in and the following week my settee was delivered by 2 lovely guys who wrapped it up in a sleeping bag type thing just in case they caught it on the door frame and got it in just fine. They even refused to take the £50 delivery money because of the hassle of the previous week. So no you're NBU

theendoftheendoftheend · 10/08/2019 17:26

I wouldn't pay someone for not doing something

Witchend · 10/08/2019 17:32

Sofa removal places round here often say you have to get it outside yourself. If they said that, then you don't have a leg to stand on.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 10/08/2019 17:33

YANBU.

I too am disappointed by the lack of PIVOTs!

jessycake · 10/08/2019 17:33

We had this problem with my mother in laws sofa , god only knows how it got in , but we cut it up and got it out , so why couldn't they ?

EmpressJewel · 10/08/2019 17:36

YANBU. There is a knack of getting furniture in and out of tight spaces and they should know how to do this.

We had a fridge delivered which was just a few inches too tall for the door frame. The delivery driver and mate made a half arsed attempt to get it in and were about to give up after all of 5 minutes. Luckily, OH was on hand and told them how to get it it. It was literally the easiest of instructions.

Weird. Surely if they said that OP would not have said ok to them collecting it, given that she knew i5 was inside?

VivaLeBeaver · 10/08/2019 17:36

I wouldn't have paid. They sound incompetent.

ysmaem · 10/08/2019 17:39

Couldn't they have cut up the sofa? I'm assuming it was going to get destroyed anyhow if it going to a recycling centre. YANBU for not wanting to pay them. I would have given them a £10 or something for their trouble/fuel cost etc though bit definitely not £80.

Ffs. Some people are just dim.

When I moved into this house, the removal men said my 3-seater sofa wouldn't go in through either door. It took me all of 5 minutes to show them how to get it in the back door. I was paying these halfwits hundreds to move my stuff.

Whosorrynow · 10/08/2019 22:54

I don't know what the grafters actually take home but I cant see that this is a job you'd not do for long unless you had very few options (?) probably halfwitts are the best they can get?

SarahAndQuack · 10/08/2019 22:59

They sound like lazy shites.

In my old place I bought a new mattress and warned them the stairs were very narrow and steep, and told them the dimensions. They got there, did some half-hearted shuffling, and declared it was impossible, they couldn't do it, I'd have to pay for delivery and they'd take it away again.

OK, I said, I'll do it myself, and started shoving it up there.

About half way up the stairs they suddenly recovered the use of their arms and decided it was all ok. Hmm

I guess they didn't like the idea a little 5'5 woman could manage something that was apparently 'impossible' to two very lazy delivery men.

StrippingTheVelvet · 10/08/2019 23:00

I had sofa delivery men arrive and do the same. I got my measuring tape and measured the sofa -in the back of their van- then measured the width of the wall. The wall had two inches on the sofa so they were told to stop taking the hand and get it in. Chancers clearly thought they could leave it with me on the drive despite having paid for home delivery. That was not happening.

PickAChew · 10/08/2019 23:08

@SarahAndQuack we had a hefty kingsize mattress delivered, the other day and the two guys got it up our weird twisty staircase without even breaking a sweat. DH got our old one up there, by himself - with a lot of swearing!

I must admit I'm queen of measuring. Our last house didn't have hallways, just 3' square entrance lobbies, and had a staircase with a ceiling parallel. I planned every single tilt and twist before pressing the buy button and gave the removers detailed instructions with every item. DH was on hand with his toolkit just in case any particular item needed breaking down smaller (mostly the ones he didn't listen to me about!)

SarahAndQuack · 10/08/2019 23:18

Grin Well that confirms my lot were chancers!

And YY to measuring - I have to, as I have no spatial sense whatsoever and always annoy DP by falling in love with stuff that is no way possibly going to fit.

pinkyperkypoo · 11/08/2019 08:54

I managed to get it into the Hall way by myself last night.
I'm sure the council do a service where they remove people's rubbish for £15
I might look into this.

Do try freecycle unless it's really tatty. Even so...

They have local groups and it's likely that people who could use a sofa or refurbish them will collect it.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 11/08/2019 09:51

If there’s an Emmaus charity shop near you they may well collect it for free or a small fee.
