AIBU to expect compensation from Tesco after finding MAGGOTS in the sweetcorn?

Pretty much what is says in the title.

I bought a bag of frozen sweetcorn from Tesco. It looked normal when i poured some into the pan of boiling water. After a couple of minutes I took a bite to see if it was ready. It tasted a bit odd but I didn't think anything of it. Drained the pan and tipped it out.... maggots. Little white ones. They had obviously been inside the kernels prior to it being frozen.

Obviously I was straight down there to complain - very politely, obviously not the staff's fault. They were very nice, refunded my 79p and I got a call yesterday from Tesco HQ saying they were very sorry, maggots had been comfirmed and they had opened a full investigation with the supplier. They have promised to update me in three weeks. I stated my main concern was that clearly the whole batch was contaminated and that other people will have been affected too. The product was still on sale 3 days after my initial complaint, though I suppose it could have been from a different batch.

My AIBU is am I being reasonable to request a small amount in compensation- maybe £50 in tesco vouchers? I'm not physically affected, just very upset about it. I was about to mash the sweetcorn up and feed it to the baby, it will be a long time before I ever touch sweetcorn again. Rice is freaking me out too, because the grains look very similar to the little white maggots!

Am genuinely interested to know if I am being reasonable here, or just clouded by the emotional response to eating a mouthful of unexpected maggots (bleurgh!!).

"I'm not physically affected, just very upset about it."

so what the fuck would £50 do? Make you somehow not upset anymore??? Confused

nobody needs to see apicture....

Chickychoccyegg · 09/08/2019 14:41

yanbu I'd hope for some compensation too as a good will gesture.
Last year my mum had a dead fly in a pasta salad from asda, she got a £150 voucher

Confusedbeetle · 09/08/2019 14:42

I can understand you are upset and revolted. However the compensation culture puzzles me. How can money make you feel better? They were apologetic and hopefully will investigate thoroughly. They bought a product and sold it in good faith. It seems a bit like "someone should pay for this" A common sentiment but not very admirable

IAskTooManyQuestions · 09/08/2019 14:43

How were you adversely affected that you need to be compensated for it? The product was replaced.

I dont have a suitable FFS eye roll emoticon that adequately conveys my thoughts.

It will have been.

Here's a thought - wait for the investigation. And see what they say.

They're actually called cornworms and wont kill you

That looks like rice.
Had rice been cooked in the same pan prior or the colander used to drain rice before the corn.

LettuceP · 09/08/2019 14:44

YABU. They refunded you and are taking the issue seriously and trying to make sure it doesn't happen again. You can't just ask them for £50 😂 don't get me wrong it would be lovely if they offered but you can't ask them, they don't owe you compensation.

donkir · 09/08/2019 14:45

Why do you need compensation? You realise that money has to come from somewhere don't you. Their insurance which needs paying. If people make ridiculous compensation claims then their policy increases they then recoup that money by putting up prices in store.

Sparklingbrook · 09/08/2019 14:45

How is a £50 voucher going to make you feel any better?

Cohle · 09/08/2019 14:47

What financial loss have you suffered that you need compensated for? Or do you want £50 for the pain and suffering of laying eyes on some corn worms?

matteroflifeordeath · 09/08/2019 14:49

You don’t need £50 a replacement and couple of quid for petroleum would be fine.

BobbleHat102 · 09/08/2019 14:49

Interesting. Thanks for the responses. I guess the consensus is that IABU then! Grin

So bad you've been put off sweetcorn so feel the need to share a photo with all of us

And £50 for a 79p pack of frozen sweetcorn 😂

BobbleHat102 · 09/08/2019 14:51

@cohle i didn't lay eyes on them, i ate them. The guy from tesco also used the word maggots and I wasn't previously aware of corn worms.

One of the chains holding up the big cardboard banners hanging down from Tesco's ceiling snapped resulting in it swinging into the big roses tins stacked 5 high on the top shelf (it was around xmas time). This caused a load of the tins to fall off the shelf onto my mums head and she fell to the floor. She was physically hurt and felt humiliated with other shoppers all staring and burst into tears. Tesco offered her a £5 store voucher as compensation Hmm So I wouldn't hold your breath at £50!!

Soontobe60 · 09/08/2019 14:51

You got an extra protein boost!

NuggieThief · 09/08/2019 14:52

Yeah that is gross. But how do you know Tesco’s aren’t going to offer some compensation once they’ve completed the investigation? It’s a bit CF to outright ask. Just sit tight and if they offer you something see it as a goodwill gesture. I don’t think you should outright start demanding money.

mollpop · 09/08/2019 14:53

I’d expect more than my 79 pence back. Just as a token recognition of the inconvenience of having to go back to the shop to bring this to their attention.

MargoLovebutter · 09/08/2019 14:54

They should replace the product and give you a few vouchers, as a gesture of goodwill - that's just good customer service.

Cohle · 09/08/2019 14:55

It didn't cause you any harm did it? Grin

chocomug · 09/08/2019 14:56

An absolute chancer is what op is.

Get over it!

Oysterbabe · 09/08/2019 14:57

You have already been reimbursed 79p. You aren't entitled to anything else as you suffered no ill effects.

mollpop · 09/08/2019 14:57

I once found 3 small snails in a bag of frozen peas. I put them in the bin and ate the peas!

VivaLeBeaver · 09/08/2019 14:58

Never eating sweetcorn again.

Blimey my wheelie bin was crawling in maggots this morning. I'm feeling overdosed on maggots today.
