To serve family a lasagne that had a dead wasp in it?

Spent all morning making a delicious ragu sauce for a lasagne in preparation for my brother and his family who are visiting this weekend.

It had been simmering away nicely for over an hour. Went to give it a stir and discovered a dead wasp in the sauce Shock. I have no idea how the fucker got in there.

The ingredients were expensive. I made enough to serve 9 people.

Do I need to throw it away and start again? Or WIBU to serve it anyway? (minus the wasp obviously)

@goodwinter yes, I detest wasps and can't even look at pictures.

The last time I got stung it took 3 months to complete go away and I would wake up with my foot itching and throbbing in pain. I would watch videos of people setting nests on fire to make me feel better.

missbattenburg · 09/08/2019 15:30

I once served a lasagne that the cat had licked half of the cheese sauce off the top as it was sat on the side waiting to go into the oven. Luckily the sauce was thick enough to spread the remains over the top.

Battendog did this as a (big) puppy.

Guess which bit of the lasagne I had to eat? Grin

Justgorgeous · 09/08/2019 15:36

Just let it boil for another few mins. It’s a wasp nothing bad in them.

bouncingraindrops · 09/08/2019 15:39

I'm really fussy, obsessive about dates etc and even I would eat this Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2019 15:44

Wouldn't bother me.

I'd pick out the wasp and eat the lasagne myself, and if I'm prepared to eat it myself, I'll serve it to others.

If I wouldn't eat it myself, I wouldn't give it to anyone else.

Scarlett555 · 09/08/2019 15:45

The béchamel sauce is done, and tastes dreamy if I do say so myself.
As the consensus seems so be IWNBU then wasp lasagne it is!

SIL if you are a Mumsnetter and reading this then please forgive me.

I agree that if it were a dead rat (or even a mouse) I'd throw it out.

Not a wasp, how silly.

HopelessLayout · 09/08/2019 15:46

Another one! You people do know that when your food is growing it will have had all manner of bugs crawling over it?

Take the wasp out and simmer it a little bit longer if you're that worried.

HopelessLayout · 09/08/2019 15:52

You can serve these for dessert to complement the wasp sauce

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 09/08/2019 16:02

Diner: Waiter, waiter, there's a dead wasp in my lasagne!

Waiter: Meh, what do you want me to do about it?
It's too late to take him to waspital!

MrPan · 09/08/2019 16:03

Grind in some broken glass - to you know, give it a bit of bite. Lovely.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 09/08/2019 16:06

Personally, I'd use chilli instead of wasps.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 09/08/2019 16:07

I'd serve it

but would probably make a new portion for myself

SerenDippitty · 09/08/2019 16:12

What they don't know won't hurt them!

BigChocFrenzy · 09/08/2019 18:26

it would be wrong to make the decision yourself about whether other people would eat lasagne stirred with wasp willy & bum

You need to ask everyone, some time before serving up

Decide what an alternative would be for those who refuse it.

Scarlett555 · 09/08/2019 18:37

I had too much béchamel so made a macaroni cheese as well. However I think if it was me about to eat the food I would rather not know!

OP posts:
PushingThru · 09/08/2019 18:38

I'd eat it myself - I probably wouldn't give it to others to be fair!

PushingThru · 09/08/2019 18:39

I'm not judging though! Your lasagne sounds delicious - if you told me you picked a wasp out if I'd happily still eat it!

TerracottaLeggy · 09/08/2019 20:04

More revolted by people that taste the sauce and put the spoon back in to stir frankly.

Well that's just fucking rank and unhygienic. If I knew the cook had done this I wouldn't eat it either.

All those horrified posters saying they'd ditch the sauce, do you throw away entire meals when you eat outside and a wasp lands on your food?!

Yes..it kills my appetite. If someone so much as mentions certain rodent vermin in conversation, I also lose my appetite for hours.

It's quite concerning that so few people can understand the bad ethics of serving it without giving people the choice of eating it after full disclosure

Bet you all think the pie scene in Titus Andronicus is normal behaviour too Wink

TooManyPups · 09/08/2019 20:14

That's it never eating anything cooked by anyone else again lol... But I have major food issues anyway.

This.

HerRoyalNotness · 09/08/2019 20:21

I’d eat it and quietly let my brother know, then he could decide if it was to be served to his family. I’d serve it to mine, it’s a wasp that was removed.

I remember though going to my x in-laws for Sunday dinner and my SIL whispering don’t eat the ragu and another time don’t eat the pie or whatever. They had variously been munched by the dog, a rat, and had cling film left on it when being reheated inthr Oven which melted in it. All served up. Her sons ate it anyway, the DILs declined

TayoTheLittleBus · 09/08/2019 20:25

I actually cannot BELIEVE that no one has made a Ratatouille joke/reference about the rat. I trawled the thread looking for one. I’m so disappointed.

Sparklesocks · 09/08/2019 20:25

First of all - amazing thread title!

Second - yes I would serve it

Seriously? It's a wasp that's been removed, the lasagne sauce has been cooked more and (presumably) also cooked even more in the oven after adding pasta, bechemel sauce etc.

What on earth could harm anyone in that?????
