To serve family a lasagne that had a dead wasp in it?

Spent all morning making a delicious ragu sauce for a lasagne in preparation for my brother and his family who are visiting this weekend.

It had been simmering away nicely for over an hour. Went to give it a stir and discovered a dead wasp in the sauce Shock. I have no idea how the fucker got in there.

The ingredients were expensive. I made enough to serve 9 people.

Do I need to throw it away and start again? Or WIBU to serve it anyway? (minus the wasp obviously)

As long as none of the guests have acute bee/wasp allergies.

MsVestibule · 09/08/2019 14:39

Trying to think of a scenario where the males get served lasagne and the females get something different but that would seem very weird.

How about:
'Lasagne for the gents, a nice salad for the ladies because we have to watch our waistlines, don't we?'

Looking forward to seeing the AIBU from your SIL tomorrow 😀.

Wasps, like many insects, are edible, apart from the sting. They are a delicacy in parts of Japan. There is a fancy schmancy restaurant in Fitzrovia that serves them along with other entomological delights. Plus, as plenty of PPs have pointed out, you've probably chomped on many a wasp if you eat figs. Just tell your guests it's a special Asian-Italian fusion recipe lasagne.

If you're (unnecessarily) worried about germs, even if wasps carried disease, any nasties would have been instantly killed the second it landed in the hot ragu.

goodwinter · 09/08/2019 14:43

It's fine OP! As others have said, there's insect bits in all sorts of food. We all eat insect parts all the time, we just have the luxury of being so far removed from nature and the origins of our food that we don't have to think about it.

Funguy · 09/08/2019 14:47

there is bound to be wasp poo in it now

MargoLovebutter · 09/08/2019 14:50

Wouldn't think twice, would just hoick the wasp out and say nothing to anyone about it!

Yeahnahmum · 09/08/2019 14:53

There is dead cow in there as well right so there might as well be a dead wasp in it too 😂

dottiedodah · 09/08/2019 14:54

Scoop out the dead waspie, throw him away !,Bring your sauce up to boiling point for a few minutes .This should be long enough to kill any germs .Presumably its going in the oven for 35/40 mins to bake?.Dont see any problem TBH!

Cheeseandwin5 · 09/08/2019 14:56

Too be honest you must be very upstanding , as I wouldn't give this a second thought.

MargoLovebutter · 09/08/2019 14:56

Arf Yeahnahmum - so true!!!!

NuggieThief · 09/08/2019 14:57

Some of the people on this thread are ridiculous Hmm it’s a wasp ffs. Fish it out and serve the meal.

Brakebackcyclebot · 09/08/2019 14:59

I wouldn't even think about this. I'd fish out the wasp, keep cooking and serve it without a second thought!

buttertoasty · 09/08/2019 15:02

@Ski4130 yes I do. I am extremely repulsed by wasps and think they are the scourge of the ecosystem.

I would never forgive a family member if they knowingly fed me wasp contaminated food. I accept that yes we may unknowingly eat insects and can live with that (just about), but this is being done with full awareness.

Another vote for fish the wasp out and eat it.

When I was 14 and eating in a veggie restaurant with my family, I had a live, wriggling caterpillar in my salad. We alerted the staff who apologised and put the little guy back in the vegetable garden the place had and I carried on eating the salad. It was a nice salad, I didn't care.

Ski4130 yes I do. I am extremely repulsed by wasps and think they are the scourge of the ecosystem.

And yet certain fig trees can only be pollinated by wasps.

ladymalfoy · 09/08/2019 15:09

Did you but chicken livers in the ragu? Yum.

SadOtter · 09/08/2019 15:12

Give it a stir and check it was a lone wasp but as its only in the saucepan its fine, coz you can check for others/left over bits of wasp and it'll still be going in the oven yet so that'll kill any germs off.

I have a wasp allergy and wasps having touched food or drowned in my drink is not an issue, apart from really creeping me out, the wasp has to use muscles to release the venom which it can't do if its drowned in the sauce, swallowing a whole wasp could be an issue because of the venom sac but as long as you have removed the wasp its fine.

buttertoasty · 09/08/2019 15:19

@Coffeeandcherrypie yes I said scourge of not on. As in my of all the components they are the worst part. I know they are necessary which irritates me even more.

OrangeJustice · 09/08/2019 15:21

I once served a lasagne that the cat had licked half of the cheese sauce off the top as it was sat on the side waiting to go into the oven. Luckily the sauce was thick enough to spread the remains over the top.

goodwinter · 09/08/2019 15:21

@buttertoasty You would cut ties with a family member for fishing a wasp out of some food and serving it? That's one of the biggest overreactions I've ever heard!

ImNotYourGranny · 09/08/2019 15:23

ImNotYourGranny are you my mum? She did that one year when my cat had a chew on the defrosting turkey leg. She chopped it off and cooked the rest!

I suspect I may be, although I left the leg on, just gave it a bit of a wipe before putting it in the oven.

Aworldofmyown · 09/08/2019 15:24

FGS just fish it out!!! No harm will come to anyone (except the wasp Grin)

missbattenburg · 09/08/2019 15:28

Serve it!

I once left dried fruit to soak overnight for a Christmas Cake. I found a dead ladybird in it the next day. I found one. God knows how many were in there - do you know how hard it is to find dead bugs in dried fruit???

I cooked that bugger and served it. Everyone loved it.
