so.. this is a Ryanair tale lol

Was flying last night and queing up to board as you (they - I usually sit down til the last minute...!!) and there was a young girl, College age I'd say, and the airline steward (she wasn't Ryanair - she belonged to the airport) asked her to put the backpack in the basket/frame thing as if it doesn't fit you should have booked your bag in and paid 25 euro. So the girl was trying to get it to fit but there were some things in the front pocket that were stopping it. She was in tears, and on her own. I was just beside her and I said to her that I had room in my bag if she wanted to put some stuff in - I had a half-empty bag. So she emptied some things, a lot of make up lol, and I went through, but the backpack wouldn't slide down - it did almost fit, but she couldn't get it to actually slide in, she could only get it in if she put it in from the bottom., ie without passing it through the basket thingy. I was kinda hovering waiting for her, but this stewardess kept on and on saying she had to either leave the bag, or pay 25 euro, or not fly. Then she (steward) said she could empty her stuff into a plastic bag, and leave the bag pack. So the girl ran over to a shop and got a plastic bag, emptied the backpack and stuffed it all into the plastic bag. The plastic bag was bulging and was bigger than the backpack now!! It was getting very heated, so I stepped back in and said 'look you're letting her take the plastic bag on without paying, but it doesn't fit into the frame/basket thing, it's too big - could you not let her go just this once with a warning'. They got very aggressive to me then, and one man - seemed like a baggage handler, he had that kind of uniform - and he hadn't been there all along he'd only just showed up - he started saying were we travelling together, etc etc, and said I needed to get on board or the plane would go without me. Basically very intimidating. So I reluctantly made my way to the plane - with this girl's stuff in my bag!!!!! In the end she got on - she said she had paid the money in the end. She was so shaken and upset - said she has flown loads of times with that bag and no problem. I just thought the steward was way OTT. She actually 'caught' 5 or more people. And she didn't hve a Ryanair uniform. She seemed to be enjoying it way too much. Of course some people were just chancers - with little suitcases on wheels - definitely not allowed . Anyway, that's my rant!!!!

Yabvvvvvvvu.
If the ‘jobsworth’ bends the rules and ends up on a warning or sacked, will the drama queen young girl, or you, be on hand to pay their bills and feed their kids? No?
Well next time keep out.

Nicknacky · 08/08/2019 23:31

It doesn’t matter what time was or how far you walked. It was a stupid thing to do, surely you can see that?

HouseholdPlantMurderer · 08/08/2019 23:31

Everyone always "used that bag with x airline for yeaaaaaarssss" when they are caught

NiceRadFem · 08/08/2019 23:31

I think you were great and a decent human being. :)

Basketofkittens · 08/08/2019 23:31

Passenger services agents are paid a little over the minimum wage. They have to follow policies or they will get disciplined. They get loads of abuse from passengers. It’s not a job I would want to do!

Nicknacky · 08/08/2019 23:32

What it was not what “time” it was

gobbynorthernbird · 08/08/2019 23:34

This is one of the most stupid things I've ever read on here. Utterly daft.

ElizaPancakes · 08/08/2019 23:38

YABU.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 08/08/2019 23:38

It doesn't matter how much they are paid (although agree it's not enough), but they are paid to do their job and that's what they were doing. They were not jobsworth they were DOING their job. Do you like to do your job properly or do you think it's fine to break the rules and company policies?

Ceci03 · 08/08/2019 23:52

I hate rules for the sake of it - I see them as guidelines, slightly moveable on either side - I see the 'spirit' of the law rather than the 'letter' of the law

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 08/08/2019 23:53

You might see them as guidelines but the airlines don’t.

You had no right to interfere.

ilovesooty · 08/08/2019 23:59

I'm afraid that Bridget Jones film came into my had too. What a daft thing to do.

ilovesooty · 09/08/2019 00:00

Guidelines? This sounds more ridiculous by the minute.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 09/08/2019 00:01

Airport rules aren't rules for the sake of it though. Imagine if whole planes full of passengers wanted the rules bent just a little bit for them. It would be chaos.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/08/2019 00:03

I don't think that would help your defence in a drug smuggling trial.

Sorry your honour I see it as guidelines, not rules.

quitefranklyivehadenough · 09/08/2019 00:08

You did a lovely thing. I've flown Ryanair and found my bag fitted at Stanstead but miraculously the same bag didn't fit coming back from Bordeaux. They are bloody chancers x

Graphista · 09/08/2019 00:21

The restrictions are in place not only for passengers convenience, to ensure everyone has at least a little space for essential items, but for security and flight safety reasons too.

You were being unbelievably reckless to even CONSIDER taking a complete strangers property on as YOUR responsibility! The trouble that could have got you into hardly bears thinking about!

She had as much notice and information as every other passenger, the bag was from the sounds of things soft materials that mean the "size" of it varies according to how much was in it! NOBODY NEEDS make up in their carry on that's ridiculous! She could have reduced how much she was taking or worn clothing with loads of pockets to "redistribute" some of the weight. Or indeed as she did, paid the fee that is designed to deter such nonsense. (People will ALWAYS try and bend the rules!)

Some rules are nonsense, these ones really aren't.

"I hate rules for the sake of it - I see them as guidelines, slightly moveable on either side - I see the 'spirit' of the law rather than the 'letter' of the law"

None of that applies here! These rules are to ensure passenger safety including how the bloody plane flies! And as pp said easy evacuation in emergencies!

I'm betting you'd be first to complain if you or your loved ones were harmed due to airlines having a lax attitude to passenger safety!

MelonSlice · 09/08/2019 01:17

Not sure why OP is getting a hard time by carrying somebodies items onto the plane. Those same items that have already been through the security checkpoint, been xrayed, and physically checked by security if required.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 09/08/2019 01:22

People that think they're somehow special and that staff just break the rules "just this once" give me the rage 🤷‍♀️

YABVU especially if you see rules as ‘guidelines’ Hmm

lucy2311 · 09/08/2019 01:32

I have seen this happen.

Well done OP - very kind of you. I'd like to think a stranger would do that for my daughter.

FYI it's already through security so hardly a threat?! Calm down other people.

Mychitchatdays · 09/08/2019 01:42

Working in the airport is not fun. Loads of angry people. If everyone just stuck to the clear rules that every airline has it would make things so much easier. Some days I would work on four or five different airlines and if I just looked the other way I'd have been sacked so many times.

BlackCatSleeping · 09/08/2019 02:04

I think you tried to do a nice thing.

I think they made the size smaller a few years ago, so maybe she hasn’t travelled since then.

At the end of the day though, it was only 25 Euros. They didn’t ask for a kidney and her first-born child. And everyone does know that Ryan Air are notorious for this sort of thing.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 09/08/2019 02:15

and said I needed to get on board or the plane would go without me.

And we need idiots holding up planes don't we....
