To complain to Tesco about the amount of bags they use?

Usually shop in store but I am without a car this week and have had to do my, I think 3rd, online shop.

I spent about £60.00 and yet again received an absolute mountain of bags. I usually fit my weekly shop into about 4 bags. Tonights shop came in 13 bags. There was literally one thing in some of them. One bag for a pack of anti bac wipes, another for a bag of cat food.

AIBU to complain? Aren't we supposed to be reducing the amount of plastic we use? Maybe I'm just being naive about the process for packing these things but surely this is ridiculous in the current climate? A whole bag for one thing?!

I got a leaflet with my delivery this week saying they are going bagless from 19th August.

Bloodycats · 08/08/2019 20:53

You can choose not to use bags, just have your own ready at the door.
I think they have to separate certain things like cleaning products, meats etc. It’s not through choice.

xTinkerhellx · 08/08/2019 20:53

They sent an email out a week or two ago saying that as I.

BagsBagsandMoreBags · 08/08/2019 20:54

But some of it just made no sense. There were separate bags for my anti bac wipes and toilet roll and cat food (just dry kibble)?! It just seems an OTT system.

Opt for delivery without bags?

BagsBagsandMoreBags · 08/08/2019 20:54

That's good then, I haven't had a leaflet or email but looks like they know!

I agree they use a lot of bags though. I get my shopping delivered with them weekly. 99 percent of the time I opt for no bags (meat and cleaning products and fruit & veg are often still in bags though) but on an odd occasion I will get a delivery in bags and they do use a lot.

CloserIAm2Fine · 08/08/2019 20:57

Surely you can just opt for bagless delivery?

Gingerivy · 08/08/2019 21:01

Yes, they appear to be going bagless for their online shops later this month, but until then you can opt for no bags.

LifeBeginsNow · 08/08/2019 21:02

Back in my days working in-store Tesco, we were told to bag like that (unless the customer asked to mix it together).

This is because the products do smell quite strong and could effect other items. If you think about when the delivery is picked, they could be sat in those bags for some time and you might end up with pine fresh smelling pet food.

You can give the bags back when the next delivery takes place and they are recycled and turned into more bags. They don't go to landfill.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 08/08/2019 21:03

You can opt for bagless delivery on check out 😳

Aridane · 08/08/2019 21:07
  1. opt for no bags

Or

  1. shop with Ocado who pay you 5 pence for each plastic bag you return, any plastic bag, doesn't have to be theirs

But

  1. that's just the way the packing syste. It isn't an individual with a trolley going round your local Tesco bagging it up to maximise bag space. It's done in separate silos so, say, your baked beans / canned goods won't be in with your washing powder, even though we might well do that when packing
BringOnTheScience · 08/08/2019 21:07

DC1 does Tesco picking as their summer job, so I asked what the rules are.
Some cleaning products, eg bleach, have to be double bagged in red bags. Raw meats must be separated from other goods. Other stuff has no hard & fast rules, but relies on common sense. Most people would not want cat kibble next to their own food: it stinks!

Just select No Bags next time. It's apparently what most people choose.

Almostfifty · 08/08/2019 21:08

I get mine delivered in boxes.

WhyBirdStop · 08/08/2019 21:10

Just tick the box that says deliver without bags. It's very simple

BagsBagsandMoreBags · 08/08/2019 21:13

Yes obviously I can choose to have no bags (which I will from now although sounds like they are going bagless anyway) but the point is they still use far too many for those that don't opt for that.

Don’t have them delivered with bags - it’s that easy. The stuff comes loose but the driver will help you empty all the shopping out in your kitchen. No probs.

isthatapugunicorn · 08/08/2019 21:39

Sorry, but you’re on here whinging about the number of bags - so just don’t use them! Hopefully other people who get deliveries also see that there are too many and opt for using none too.

flingingmelon · 08/08/2019 21:58

Legally they have to put certain things in bags to prevent cross contamination, but outside of that they are going bagless from mid August.

However it's worth knowing that you can give their drivers ANY soft plastic (loo roll packaging, fruit bags etc etc) and they will take them away to be recycled. Since I found that out my landfill bin has been significantly more empty, just need to be careful about rinsing things like meat packaging lids etc.

BrokenWing · 08/08/2019 22:16

Everytime you order the option to have bags or not is right there when you check out. Why choose/pay for bags then complain about it? 🤔

PumpkinP · 08/08/2019 22:20

They are going bagless soon so no point Complaining, I’m abit annoyed though as I don’t want to have to let them in and I normally just grab the bags at the door, gonna take ages now to have to pick up an item at a time.

itsbetterthanabox · 08/08/2019 22:23

Surely you can use the bags? Use them as bin bags or shopping bags when you are out. Don't chuck them.

georgialondon · 08/08/2019 22:24

Yeah they're already going bagless.

I'm sad, I use my bags from my deliveries.

RoseMartha · 08/08/2019 22:26

My area only does bagless with tesco online

Chocolatedaim · 08/08/2019 22:28

I do find the pickers and packers at Tesco nonsensical.
Like you occasionally I get a pack of avocados in one bag, or the opposite happens and the plastic carrier bags are ripping from the weight. Or I get four tins of tomatoes and four tin pick of beans in with the eggs, leaving me with broken eggs. I also get squished bread fairly frequently, and sometimes I get bonus items, for example two packets of something when I only ordered one. I keep the extra without telling Tesco as I figure it makes up for all the cracked eggs I get!
