To think my baby has CMPA?

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:19

He's 3 months old but I think he has some of the symptoms of CMPA Sad

Constant fussing/irritability, particular after a feed
Looks bloated
Is sick after every feed/or spits up his milk
Really runny poos, they're never solid (not sure if they should be at this stage)
Sneezes a lot

He's at the GP this afternoon. Am I wrong to think it could be this?

Anyonebut · 08/08/2019 11:21

Are the poos frothy/greenish? Does he fart a lot?

Confusedbeetle · 08/08/2019 11:21

You cant get a diagnosis on MN, wrong place to ask

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:21

@Anyonebut Yes!

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:22

@Confusedbeetle It's not a diagnosis I'm after on here, just other people's experiences

With those symptoms, you are right to see a Dr. The only way to tell for sure is to eliminate cows milk from their diet, which you shouldn't do unless the GP recommends. Is he BF or FF?

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:24

@RobinsNest17 he's FF. he's been on c&g and aptamil and still no difference

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:25

Which milk does not contain cm?

Cablestitch · 08/08/2019 11:26

Could also be lactose intolerance. My DC was like this and is severely lactose intolerant. Some GPs treat CMPA and lactose intolerance as if they're the same but in the longer term you need to know which it is as it affects which milk products are worst for you.

PerfectPeony2 · 08/08/2019 11:29

Are you breastfeeding?

I went to the GP so many times with same issues. He said not to bother cutting out dairy as it won’t make a different.

He was so wrong.

Just a warning GP’s can be a bit crap with stuff like this so make sure you keep pushing or chat to your health visitor.

I gave up all dairy and soy (breastfeeding) and I had a different baby. She still can’t have cows milk now. I think it’s more common than people think. There is a prescription milk you can get too but you may have to push for it. So it’s good you’ve done some research! I had no help from GP, they fobbed me off with colic.

DD screamed constantly- sometimes so much no sound came out Sad. Was stiff as a board. Wouldn’t be put down, needed constant movement. Looking back she was clearly in so much pain and it upsets me it took so long to get it sorted.

Good luck. Flowers

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:30

@PerfectPeony2 He's formula fed.

I am worried that they won't take me seriously. He's like a different baby now, he's so so unhappy and it's awful to see him like this Sad

Wingingthis · 08/08/2019 11:32

Sounds exactly like my baby who has CMPA (now nearly 2) don’t let them palm you off at the doctors. Good luck xx

PerfectPeony2 · 08/08/2019 11:34

Just seen your update.

My guess would be allergy or reflux. They may try to give you infant gaviscon or something first. I had that and ranitidine- didn’t help at all. It’s expensive but I think you can buy the milk if you can’t get it on prescription. I gave the odd bottle and she had Nutramigen which is Hypoallergenic for cows milk allergy.

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:35

I honestly can't afford the specialist milk Sad I feel so awful, I just want to help him.

PerfectPeony2 · 08/08/2019 11:37

Don’t worry. Keep pestering the GP. They can prescribe it and get it sorted!!

Lndnmummy · 08/08/2019 11:41

Two CMPA babies here and yes it does sound like it. If you can, film the fussy ness to show them. Also ask them about reflux, they often go hand in hand. Flowers

Lndnmummy · 08/08/2019 11:43

Be very firm with gp, keep going back until you get it sorted. Where abouts are you? I’d be happy to send you a tin of neocate to try and see if that helps. I know how awful this is, so happy to help

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:43

To be honest I've been telling the HV since he was about 2 weeks old that I believed he had reflux and she totally palmed me off and made me feel stupid. He's been on infacol and grips water and they don't help massively.

It's the puking up that worries me

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 11:44

Aww thank you @Lndnmummy for your offer. I'm NW Thanks

If the GP suspects CMPA they can prescribe a hydrolysed formula that has the milk proteins broken down to make them more easily digestible. They usually get you to try the formula for a few weeks, see if baby improves then try going back to regular formula to see if symptoms return to confirm the diagnosis.

For fully allergic babies (as mine is/was) they can also prescribe hypoallergenic amino acid formula.

If BFing then mother has to remove all traces of milk from her diet for at least two weeks to see if symptoms ease.

Hollywoodcheesecake · 08/08/2019 12:15

My 6 month old DD has CMPA and her symptoms were similar to what you've described. It has taken time and some trial and error with formula and medication to get to where we are now, which is symptom free, and I am lucky to have had the full support of my HV. DD was so severely ill with her symptoms that she ended up in hospital, but this put her straight in front of paediatricians who absolutely take this condition seriously. She's currently on Neocate formula, mixed with Carobel to thicken it, and Ranitidine. She's also under a dietician to support with weaning and eventual reintroduction of milk into her diet.
My advice would be to call 111 who in my experience are likely to direct you straight to hospital. GPs aren't particularly experienced in dealing with CMPA and are also reluctant to prescribe for it as most medications aren't licensed for young babies.

Lndnmummy · 08/08/2019 13:03

Good advice from cheesecake. We ended up (on my gps advice) taking our lo to ae, where he finally got help: let us know how you get on today and we will direct you. It’s baby steps and lots of trial and error but you are not on your own. We are here x

OP, I spent four months being fobbed off by HV's and doctors until my son became so poorly he started to vomit blood. Funnily enough they began to listen then.

If your son does have CMPA your doctor will need to prescribe a milk free formula, soya formula isn't recommended for boys and goat milk formula is pricey and usually makes no difference (the proteins are too similar to cows milk).

As with most things, my HV was completely useless. Doctors will be your best bet. For my son symptoms were:

Continual vomiting
Wind
Runny, green poos
Bloating
General discomfort

My son was prescribed a milk free formula, gaviscon to thicken it and ranitidine to help with reflux. I also found I got more help from an out of hours GP as they actually sit and listen to the whole history, rather than reading notes and asking "what now".

ajonesy · 08/08/2019 13:53

Thanks everyone. Taking him to the GP at 3pm so will be back with an update. xx

Hope your appointment went well!

Kyriesmum1 · 08/08/2019 16:19

What did go say? My bubba is now on neocate after I went to gp. She was like a different baby changing into this milk. X
