To not allow someone to register at our address when they don't live here?

Dh has an uncle who lives abroad (has lived there for around 3 years, and previously lived in the UK all his life).

He is currently separated from his wife of 4 years and it sounds like they are soon to start divorce proceedings.

He only has one bank account that he had in the uk and he added his wife to the account when they married making it a joint account. Now they are divorcing he wants his pension and funeral policy etc to be from a bank account that is not joint. However one of his pensions has informed him that they cannot pay to an overseas account if he was to open one where he lives and therefore he needs a uk bank account.

He has asked several times if he can be registered in the UK at our address so he can open an account. I ve said no, dh thinks there is no issue.

Now hes really bleating on about how he needs our help with regards to registering at our address and theres no one he can turn to etc etc..

We do get on well with him (he has very recently stayed with us for several weeks) and dh speaks to him most days.

He does have 2 children who he cant register with as they are on some sort of benefit and it would complicated this for them.

Would you allow him to register at your address?

This would worry me. I don't see how it would be problematic for them unless they are doing something they shouldn't.

In theory, provided he isn't involved with fraud e.g. trying to conceal his finances in some way, it shouldn't be a risk for you. But keep it strictly to a pension address. DOn't let him do anything else.

I'm actually thinking the reason he's not asking his DC is because they wouldn't want to be complicit in his screwing over their mother!

I'd wonder if they even KNEW about any of this - would be easy for op to check! Even this guys reaction to the DC being asked "maybe we can explain to them" might be VERY revealing?

Tell him to get an HSBC account. They do c/o

Thank you for all your input. He wants to also register with our local GP so its not a case of a correspondence address he wants to be registered here.

The dc he has are not his wifes. She is only a wife of 4 years.

Hes also considering coming back to the uk and getting a static caravan which i believe your cant have as a permanent address on paper?

Anyway DH has told me that if im not happy with it then it doesnt happen.

And it wont be happening.

Good it's not happening. Sounds like he was wanting to defraud Nhs too!

When clearly he's a well off man who has no need to do so and is just being selfish.

Ok wife is not kids mum but I suspect they have the measure of him and don't want to be complicit in his shit and quite possibly illegal treatment of the woman.

Good for them - and you.

It's not yet been mentioned I don't think but I'd be concerned at your dh's lack of concern over all this.

He's either incredibly naive and too trusting or he holds similar views to the relative!

Just on the opposite side my DF just did the same thing. We are British living in the US, he wants to open a bank account here to move money for holidays and to protect it from Brexit. I agreed, it seems like a prudent idea.

I live overseas and have a UK bank account. They have my correct overseas address. It's Barclays, if he's looking for a suggestion, but I believe that there are plenty of banks that will do this. DH has one with NatWest and they also have his correct overseas address.

You could also have a care of address if you wanted to go down that route.

Tell him to bugger off and sort it out himself, it's a very common situation with plenty of solutions if he can be bothered to just have a look at stuff online for half an hour.

@ANiceLuxury I'm so glad you're saying no. The apparent intention to defraud the NHS alone is awful!

@stucknoue You absolutely can use a bank statement as proof of address. I've spent the last several years moving houses, jobs, GPs and bank accounts. All have accepted bank statements.

The bank he has don't have a branch were he lives

Why does that matter? He can open a single account, get the pension paid into it, and organise a standing order for the payments to be transferred across into whichever account is convenient for him.
