To not allow someone to register at our address when they don't live here?

Dh has an uncle who lives abroad (has lived there for around 3 years, and previously lived in the UK all his life).

He is currently separated from his wife of 4 years and it sounds like they are soon to start divorce proceedings.

He only has one bank account that he had in the uk and he added his wife to the account when they married making it a joint account. Now they are divorcing he wants his pension and funeral policy etc to be from a bank account that is not joint. However one of his pensions has informed him that they cannot pay to an overseas account if he was to open one where he lives and therefore he needs a uk bank account.

He has asked several times if he can be registered in the UK at our address so he can open an account. I ve said no, dh thinks there is no issue.

Now hes really bleating on about how he needs our help with regards to registering at our address and theres no one he can turn to etc etc..

We do get on well with him (he has very recently stayed with us for several weeks) and dh speaks to him most days.

He does have 2 children who he cant register with as they are on some sort of benefit and it would complicated this for them.

Would you allow him to register at your address?

Whilst he stayed with us dh took him to Barclays the bank he’s always banked with but they said he couldn’t open an account as he wasn’t registered in the uk.

He deregistered from GP surgery etc when he transferred over.

Has he tried looking in to HSBC?

purpleleotard · 07/08/2019 22:34

He may be trying to keep a UK address live for NHS benefits.
If you live abroad and don't have a UK address sometimes you are not able to access free the NHS health care.
just fraud.
don't do it.

Ragglesnaggle · 07/08/2019 22:35

Christ no!

user1486131602 · 07/08/2019 22:35

Nope!
He can then take credit out at your address. If should apply for credit at your address but not live there, that’s fraud!
Do NOT get involved in his divorce! He can easily go to the bank and take his wife’s name off. He is not allowed to hide any assets and the HMRC will come after him at your address if you allow him to ‘live’ there. Lastly, should he become unemployed you will be responsible for any benefits he claims ‘fraudulently’ at your address, not to mention council tax people and if his credit goes bad it can affect yours.

Ps: my advice comes from experience, so 0lease don’t.

And lastly the govt made it a lawful right for everyone to have a basic bank account in the uk. Go back to Barclays.

IfThisWasOurHouse · 07/08/2019 22:38

No... fucking... way...

send him this

AngelasAshes · 07/08/2019 22:40

I’d let him do it, it’s just a mailing or correspondence address. It’s not for elections (so not illegal). I do it for companies that cannot support addresses abroad in their IT systems.

Graphista · 07/08/2019 22:40

Ahem

I repeat

HE IS AT IT!

longtimelurkerhelen · 07/08/2019 22:44

Actually this is better if he is in the EU

YobaOljazUwaque · 07/08/2019 22:46

Its dishonesty.

He wants to hide corporately owned assets from his wife who is entitled to a fair share of those assets.

And he's hoping to establish a foothold to be able to claim to be ordinarily resident in the UK when the time comes to start needing serious NHS treatment.

That's two different frauds he wants you to collude in.

Indicative · 07/08/2019 22:57

If he already has a UK joint account he can ask them to also open a sole account. It is as easy as that.

Or he can open an account at a bank in England but still have his address abroad as the registered address. I kmow this because my parents have opened Natwest accounts for their English pensions although they have lived in the US for many years.

The uncle is making this far more complicated than he needs to. He has it paid into his UK account and then pays a £ cheque into his account abroad and they apply the exchange rate.

JustTwoMoreSecs · 07/08/2019 23:22

If there are HSBC branches where we live he could open a local account with them and then a linked UK account. We did that before moving to the UK.

familycourtq · 07/08/2019 23:57

However one of his pensions has informed him that they cannot pay to an overseas account if he was to open one where he lives and therefore he needs a uk bank account.
I have worked with quite a few pension funds all of whom pay overseas pensioners to their foreign accounts- this sounds fishy.

diddl · 08/08/2019 07:49

" it’s just a mailing or correspondence address"

It's not though is it?

He wants to appear to be living in UK doesn't he?

I had no idea that you could now open a new UK bank account without living there.

BobbleHat102 · 08/08/2019 07:57

As others have said, this really doesn't add up. There's no reason why he can't pick up the phone to the UK bank which has the joint account and ask for a separate, individual account. Or use one of his children's addresses. Hmmm.

stucknoue · 08/08/2019 08:01

You can have bank statements sent to any address, it doesn't mean you live there. It's why you can't use your bank statement to prove your address (only a utility bill). He does not need to be on the electoral roll.

user1486131602 · 08/08/2019 17:13

Stucknoue

I am in wales
I’m not sure who you Bank with but that’s not the case here. My STBXH used bank statements to get put ON the electoral roll after 10 yrs!
( lived apart but hadn’t divorced, to protect his assets, he put himself on) then promptly took out credit here!
The council chased me for his missed payments even tho he wasn’t here!
So as you can see the advice I have given is from experience and from friend who is a manager at Lloyd’s giving me advice about fraud.

Please be careful

flumposie · 08/08/2019 17:17

I wouldn't. Read too many threads where things go wrong in similar situations.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 08/08/2019 17:25

No problem with this, so long as you don't put him on the electoral register.

Katiet123 · 08/08/2019 17:55

Pretty sure that's fraud.

diddl · 08/08/2019 18:09

"You can have bank statements sent to any address, it doesn't mean you live there"

He wants to open a new account, not just have an address for correspondence.

zafferana · 08/08/2019 18:13

Don't get involved OP. What he wants to do is shady and possibly illegal. He doesn't live at your address, so don't let him say that he does. The way he's whingeing on is suspicious IMO.

cubed123 · 08/08/2019 18:18

It’s fine, my mum had her post delivered to mine for several years. Nothing was affected.

When she passed away there were no issues - the relevant authorities and banks were notified that she had passed and that was that. One asked for executors details in a letter which was supplied.

Don’t overthink it.
