To just take my puppy to playgroup anyway??

I have a 10 week old puppy who fell ill over the weekend. Long story short, vet took loads of bloods and samples ... found she was anaemic as well as something else that didn’t add up in the bloods. Gave her a strong wormer and antibiotics until results come back. - day after the wormer, she shat out worms and immediately returned back to her normal self. So much so that’s she’s driving me insane. She’s full of energy and she’s bored. She was due to start puppy playgroup on Monday night but vet said not to take her until we find out results of samples. It’s now Wednesday and the dog is driving me, my other dog and herself absolutely batshit crazy. There is nothing wrong with her anymore. Even the wet said it was likely just down to the worms.

Results are still not back. AIBU to just take her to playgroup tonight anyway?? She’s 10 weeks and needs socialising ASAP

Now rtft, I’ll stand by the fact you’re not prepared for a pup. A dobie is a clever, active breed and your fed up already and too weak to carry a pup, how are you going to manage waking her fully grown? Working in rescue it never cease to amaze me why people buy dogs unsuitable for them.

ReapersHowler · 07/08/2019 19:28

If you put wet food in a kong with a hole on each end make sure you put a stick in before freezing it so there's a hole directly through the middle or it can get stuck on your dogs tongue.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 07/08/2019 19:39

Puppy blues - very very common

They change so quickly at this age. Short bursts of activity - lead training in the garden, snuffle mat, quiet time, Kong - and vary it as much as you can. This time last year I was demented trying to entertain BastardPup. He's now a very chilled chap. His pal at daycare is a Doberman who is also very chilled out most of the time.

@Bookworm4 I researched my breed for two years. I was puppy prepared. What I’m not prepared for is my plans going tits up as I’m autistic and it throws me way off when things don’t go to plan. I will get over it and re-plan for the new scenario. Now that I’ve had my little meltdown I can start re-planning. I’m autistic. I don’t deal well with change of plan.

I love my dog dearly, she is with me for life so no point in banging on about rescue shelters as she will never see one.

BTW kong with frozen natural yoghurt used to keep our pup busy for ages

Dippypippy1980 · 07/08/2019 20:00

Your pup is gorgeous😊

Sorry it’s nit going to plan, that must be really frustrating and disappointing.

You sound like an excellent pet owner, and I am sure you will get through this little blip.

MirzyMoo · 07/08/2019 20:41

Are you a vet @TheBadNeighbour?

If not do what you have been told instead of ignoring professional advice.

Crunchymum · 07/08/2019 20:44

She looks like trouble OP.

She is a beaut though.

What breed is she?

Crunchymum · 07/08/2019 20:45

Oh sorry, she's a Doberman.

Crunchymum · 07/08/2019 20:48

What age and breed is your other dog?

Malvinaa81 · 07/08/2019 20:52

It would be selfish to expose other dogs to a possibly ill dog.

If you can't see this, and are only concerned about your own ability to cope with a puppy, then you need help.

RedWoollyHat · 07/08/2019 21:07

@Malvinaa81

RTFT or at least the OP's updates. A few pages ago the OP said she isn't going.

Pollypenguin01 · 07/08/2019 21:14

Oh gosh, East Yorkshire is a bit over 280 miles from me so not sure I can pop them round anytime soon unless you’re putting me up for the night lol Grin

Could you put a post on Facebook to see if anyone has similar you could borrow?
Otherwise a treat ball is fairly cheap and would give the pup plenty of movement and something to think about. This is the type I have and it’s really good www.amazon.co.uk/Ruff-N-Tumble-Snak-ball/dp/B007CY4VIY/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?s=gateway&keywords=dog+treat+ball&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1565208788&sr=8-16

Cherrysoup · 07/08/2019 21:32

Treat ball but be careful there no jealousy from older dog. It was the one thing my older boy wouldn't let the puppy near.

Freeze the Kong, use natural yogurt to bind ingredients. I put in bits of the normal food, carrot, cheap meat paste, peanut butter (check there's no xylitol, it's toxic to dogs)

Beware of puppy playgroups, all I see them doing is teaching the dog that it OK to rush up to and jump all over other dogs, horrible behaviour. I bloody hate dogs that do that. Mine are neutral around other dogs unless they have an ill-mannered dog who leaps at them. The best bit of puppy training I've seen recently was a guy with a pup on the lead who made it sit and got the other owner to let their dog sniff then move past.

Resident Collie wasn't able to do socialization until she was 4 months old. She's turned out fine. If you're struggling for ideas, Canine Tutor on facebook is a great resource. The owner has a large amount of experience in training dogs and great advice. She's also in East Yorkshire, if I remember right. While most of the posts centre around dealing with behaviour issues, having spoken to the owner, I know she's a good source of ideas for training and might be able to give you tips for socialisation pre 2nd vaccine without needing to carry puppy.
Puppy is absolutely gorgeous and I hope you can work something out. Working and pastoral breeds really do like to test your patience and sanity!

RedRiverHog · 07/08/2019 21:57

She is gorgeous! I second the Canine Enrichment group on Facebook, I've used many ideas from there.

I think I read you have a car? Can you park up near a supermarket entrance, have her in the open boot and let people come see her if they want? Make sure she can't jump out of course. I did this with my golden retriever a few times. Little treats for good behavior around people who make a fuss of her and equally around the ones who don't.

Do you have any Puppy School classes near you? My trainer was very helpful. Good luck!

CheesePuffTheMagicDragon · 07/08/2019 22:54

Out of interest @WiddlinDiddlin what are your qualifications? Smile

Quizacabusi · 07/08/2019 23:29

Sounds like you need to train her to relax which is just as important as any other training. If you google positive reinforcement of relax/bed you will get some good videos.

Also a game can be made by hiding her food around the garden, in a snuggle mat or in a frozen Kong.

You might also want to do some clicker training of tricks which will wear out her brain faster than you can wear out her body.

Beaches might also be an option depending where you are, go when it’s low tide and the beach is nice and clean

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 08/08/2019 08:00

CheesePuff WiddlinDiddlin helped me with one of my dogs, so I can tell you she is a member of the Pet Professional Guild and an accredited member of the Professional Assocation of Canine Trainers (the latter being an ABTC member organisation). She really does know her stuff.

CheesePuffTheMagicDragon · 08/08/2019 10:09

Thanks @TheTitOfTheIceberg (great name!) it makes my teeth itch when people say they are qualified but don't say how! Be proud!
