To just take my puppy to playgroup anyway??

I have a 10 week old puppy who fell ill over the weekend. Long story short, vet took loads of bloods and samples ... found she was anaemic as well as something else that didn’t add up in the bloods. Gave her a strong wormer and antibiotics until results come back. - day after the wormer, she shat out worms and immediately returned back to her normal self. So much so that’s she’s driving me insane. She’s full of energy and she’s bored. She was due to start puppy playgroup on Monday night but vet said not to take her until we find out results of samples. It’s now Wednesday and the dog is driving me, my other dog and herself absolutely batshit crazy. There is nothing wrong with her anymore. Even the wet said it was likely just down to the worms.

Results are still not back. AIBU to just take her to playgroup tonight anyway?? She’s 10 weeks and needs socialising ASAP

She’s used to the car now, she’s seen a few different people but as I don’t socialise it’s difficult! She’s definitely used to the vet 😂 I can’t carry her about, she’s too big. It was a struggle just getting her from the car into the vet surgery

Can you put a peg in th middle of the garden and tie lead/rope on to it and let her run about on a leash for a while.

rubyroot · 07/08/2019 17:14

Too big at 10 weeks! What on earth is she?

FurrySlipperBoots · 07/08/2019 17:14

Take her out in your arms to experience new things. That's what we did before ours were vaccinated, and the stimulation was tiring for them. Take her to the train station, the supermarket (outside!) and into town where she will be mobbed by enthusiastic puppy lovers.

When my Border collie was that age her favourite toy was her 'discovery bottle' - just a plastic bottle with a few little bells, some toy money and shredded tissue from a party popper inside it. A strong cord was tied round its neck (it was one of those 'Copella' apple juice bottles so had a very wide lid) and the other end was tied to a rubber puppy ring. The house she spent running backwards and forwards with it and 'killing' it. Obviously it could only be used under very strict supervision but it made her deliriously happy. She also liked playing in a children's play tunnel.

It’s not all going wrong, don’t worry. Socialisation at the puppy class would have been good, but it’s not the end of the world if she has to miss this week, honestly. She’s exposed to another dog in your house to play with (within reason, don’t be afraid to separate them if it’s too much for him), you’re giving her plenty of stimulation and there will be loads of opportunities to get out and about with her very soon.

BarkandCheese · 07/08/2019 17:17

Either carry her or get a puppy sling. I used a puppy sling with mine to take her out and about before she was vaccinated. If you’ve got any dog friendly shops or cafes in your area pop in with her to get her used to different places and people.

What breed BadNeighbour?

F.........................cking vets.. please DO take your pup out for walks, just stick to clean places (pavements that arent covered in poo, beaches, fields, not nasty alleyways covered in crap or where dogs free roam stray..)..

Lack of socialisation and its resultant behaviour issues kills more dogs than ALL the diseases we vaccinate against, put together.

You cannot totally avoid the spread of disease by keeping a pup in, to do that you'd need to wear a hazmat suit to go out, take it off at the door, decontamination shower before you go in...

No one is doing that, so by not taking her out, shes still being exposed to diseases tracked in by you/airborn/in the garden... but NOT getting any of the benefit of going out.

Talk to your trainer, I would let you come to puppy class on the proviso you stay in the corner and don't let your pup sniff/greet others.

I'd do that because I know I can mop before and after with a kennel strength disinfectant and the risks would be no greater than normal.

TheBadNeighbour · 07/08/2019 17:20

She’s a Doberman. I know it’s not a massive breed but she weighs a ton and is all long spider legs ... she’s difficult to carry because of the shape and weight of her. Plus I’m severely anaemic so weaker than most

Wow! There's a thing called "Puppy playgroup"? Just introduce your puppy to as many social interactions as you can. Walk him through town. Sit on a bench to watch passing traffic. Allow him to meet strangers - young people, old people, teenagers and children. Allow him to sniff other dogs (once he is fully vaccinated, or unless you know the other dog is fully vaccinated).

Honestly, no puppy needs "puppy playgroup". Save your money. Introduce your puppy to as many different scenarios as possible and enrol him in puppy class when he is fully innoculated and ready to meet other puppies. Usually around 14 weeks old. That will benefit you and puppy.

adaline · 07/08/2019 17:22

Please don't take her until you have a clear set of results from the vet and she's had her jabs. You have no idea on the background of these other pups and any of them could be carrying a whole variety of nasty bugs.

Carry pup around in your arms or in a doggy backpack if you want to socialise her. Please don't risk her health or the health of any other dogs. It's not fair.

Oh look at her! ❤️

cushioncovers · 07/08/2019 17:24

Oh she's beautiful but please don't take her. In the grand scheme of things one week won't make any difference

Vivavivienne · 07/08/2019 17:25

What did the breeder say about it? Why on earth is she selling puppies without them being wormed and without giving you a worming plan?

TheBadNeighbour · 07/08/2019 17:26

I’m sorry for the OP, I’m just stressed out. I don’t deal well with plans going tits up

Bury some toys or kibble for her to sniff out.

TheBadNeighbour · 07/08/2019 17:28

She’s got shit loads of toys. I’m doing all the indoor / garden stuff. Nothing tires her out.

She was wormed, I saw the breeder do it.

Puppies had to be fully vaccinated before they could attend our vets puppy group, surprised unvaccinated puppies are allowed.

Agree with others, get her socialized, but that means out in the car/carried/in a buggy if too heavy a couple of times everyday. Much more important than puppy group.

TheBadNeighbour · 07/08/2019 17:29

It’s not my fault they call it playgroup, i didn’t name it!

I’m assuming that as you have dogs, you are an animal lover. How would you feel if you took pup anyway and some poor other pups became ill? Be responsible and don’t go until results are back

Saucery · 07/08/2019 17:30

Mine was a little older when she got a severe recurring stomach problem which took a while to be diagnosed and resolved. Due to the ‘effects’ on her digestion it was very difficult to do all the classes and group walks we’d planned, but she still turned out ok.
It’s hard work, I know, but this will pass and you can get back on track.

TheBadNeighbour · 07/08/2019 17:31

I’ve already said I’m not going user.

Saucery · 07/08/2019 17:31

OP is not taking the dog. RTFT ffs.

TwoPupsandaHamster · 07/08/2019 17:35

Formerly known as puppy classes

Puppies, within my area, can be enrolled once they have had their full innoculations. Usually at 14 weeks old. OP's puppy is 10 weeks old.

OP can introduce her puppy to lots of social occasions before pup is fully vaccinated. Puppy Playgroup, at 10 weeks old, isn't one of them
