How do you organise your attic?

It's my last place to declutter. I hate being in there so think I will attempt it weekly. A couple of things at a time. Any good ideas to keep it sorted? Quickly?

I try to zone it - xmas stuff, camping stuff, winter clothes etc. Transparent boxes so you know what is in them.

DP just shoves stuff in there with no thought so its an ongoing battle.

chickenyhead · 06/08/2019 23:18

Chaos, had to buy a new xmas tree last year as I couldn't get to the old one

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/08/2019 23:20

If it hasn't been used in the last 18 months bin it.
I only keep suitcases and Christmas decorations in our attic as they get used once a year.

Fatasfooook · 06/08/2019 23:21

Haunted doll on the rocking chair on the right, mysterious padlocked box on the left and the pile of spooky oil portraits all on easels covered with cobwebby sheets just kinda scattered around

darkcloudsandsunnyskies · 06/08/2019 23:22

I open the trap door and chuck stuff in. I know that one day the whole lot will collapse on me. But in the meantime....meh....

Penelopepeace · 06/08/2019 23:24

Currently stuff is thrown randomly through the hatch. I have just bought 10 storage boxes and plan to cull some stuff and organise the rest.

Joh66 · 06/08/2019 23:24

Once it's in the attic, you may as well just throw it out.

OhioOhioOhio · 06/08/2019 23:24

So I have far too much baby stuff. How much of that do you keep to look at when you are old?
I like the zones idea. Less keen on the cobwebs and doll.

I've never been up there, really don't like ladders even the proper loft ones and our hatch is right at the top of the stairs, therefore it's DHs area so it's probably chaos

Titsywoo · 06/08/2019 23:33

Yep, zones and boxes. And a good clear out every few years. I have Xmas, halloween, memory (photos and sentimental), luggage, old toy (Lego mainly), spare sheet/duvet sections plus one but with fans for summer and a few random things. Everything is boxed (mostly in the moving boxes from 6 years ago.

Katzia · 06/08/2019 23:38

There's nothing in my attic except Christmas decorations and the tree. Even that I fought with hubby to be allowed to put those few items in it. He would prefer nothing at all in the attic. He is adamant storing items in the is a fire risk and actually invalidates the house insurance. No idea if he's right or not.

PamelaTodd · 06/08/2019 23:44

We are moving to a point of only having seasonal stuff in the attic and one “treasure box” for each of us.

We’re not quite there yet. We did a massive declutter but time for another now. I think it gets easier to be a bit more ruthless each time.

Regarding baby clothes, I read a good article that pointed out that one item can hold lots of poignant memories and that you don’t need to keep every piece of clothing ever worn.

Cismyfatarse1 · 06/08/2019 23:48

Mine is now EMPTY!!!! I have been doing a happy dance ever since.

(We are moving house but it was full of dead peoples' crap - lots of it. Highlight, a cow's hoof pin cushion. Yuck)

Kiwiinkits · 06/08/2019 23:50

Organised attic is a contradiction in terms

Branster · 06/08/2019 23:59

PamelaTod that’s exactly what we do. Kids’ “treasure box” is somehow having babies all the time and I don’t have the heart to throw their stuff away if they decide to keep it.

Branster · 07/08/2019 00:00

Plastic crates and lots of trips to the tip, a car boot sale, NCT sale, eBay

OhioOhioOhio · 07/08/2019 00:03

This is helpful. Except for the house insurance info. That sounds like a worry.

So the baby clothes... One item?

My parents have got their old furniture up there that really helps to keep their attic sorted with drawers, cupboards & clothes rails. My Dad fully floored it and added extra shelves to the roof frame too.

Our attic is only half floored and a complete mess. We went to put stuff up the other week and realised there’s no more space Blush

elQuintoConyo · 07/08/2019 00:09

An oxymoron!

Ours contains:
Christmas tree
Christmas decorations
Suitcases (with winter clothes in, they get taken down at the end of Sept/beginning Oct so we can swap for summer clothes)
Camping shizz

Nothing else. We had a big clear out recently and things just got chucked* left right and centre. Practically nothing 'sparked joy' FFS, I hate that expression!

  • Chucked = a variety of handed on, charity shopped, recycled and Ebayed.
Coconut0il · 07/08/2019 00:18

Baby things? For DS1 I kept every single thing he had ever had. After DS2 was born and he didn't fit in anything at the right season I got rid of it all apart from 1 pair of shoes and about 3 special outfits each. They probably won't want this either but I couldn't let them go.

I have zones same as above and try to just sellotape a list of what's in each box on the side.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/08/2019 00:31

If it isn't already (and you can afford it), board it out completely with no gaps (apart from wires/pipes, of course). Not just a few loose boards here and there - proper nailed down/secured so you can crawl across them (keep some knee pads next to the hatch if you like Smile). If it isn't, you're always playing a guessing game as to whether something is light enough and positioned carefully enough not to fall through - including yourself! - and will nervously underuse it's full capability.

Yes to the transparent boxes, clearly labelled (ideally on the lid and two sides), but make good use of the eaves - spare duvets/sleeping bags/pillows etc can be bagged up (transparent bags) and shoved into the corners.

If it's not terribly anal, make a little inventory of everything that's there (level of detail/vagueness is up to you) and exactly where it is/what number box or bag it's in etc. Laminate it and keep it next to the hatch or somewhere safe downstairs.

If that's too much effort, you could always just use (decent quality) coloured stickers - green for Christmas stuff, blue for Winter clothes/bedding, orange for anything you're keeping for memories but don't need to access in a hurry etc. That way, you can easily target what you need to get at a glance by what colour box it should be in or at least eliminate boxes where it definitely isn't.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 07/08/2019 00:35

We have a three story new build house with our bedroom basically in the roof. Our attic is a little windowless room under the eaves, so no ladder required. I love it.

bellsbuss · 07/08/2019 00:41

Never been up there as I don't like ladders and I'm scared of spiders. OH always puts away stuff up there , he's very organised though .

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/08/2019 00:41

Technically, I think official guidelines are that you should have 27cm of uncompacted insulation in all places. Even for lofts that aren't as low-pitched as ours, a foot in height is still an awful lot of usable space to lose. Ours is only five feet high at the very widest point along the apex!

You can get special tough plastic riser things that clip on to the beams and can support boards that therefore don't press down on the insulation, but they're doubtless much less strong and secure than wood across the actual beams.

I wonder how many people actually follow these guidelines we didn't ? I don't know if these guidelines become compulsory if the loft insulation is done by a company or official contractor for the council/housing association etc.?!? We ordered a whole load of stuff made from sheep's wool and did it ourselves. Lovely stuff - so much nicer to work with than the scratchy stuff (has anybody ever seen the fantastic film Shooting Fish?!)!

OhioOhioOhio · 07/08/2019 00:43

I love the idea of an inventory of what is up there. These are great ideas.
