To drink a bottle of wine 3/4 nights a week?

Just that really....

I work hard. The house is spotless, washing/ironing always done. Kids happy, OH happy....all happy.

I like a glass of wine....or 3 or 4.

Never ever drink till I’m drunk. All of my children (eldest is 20) have never seen me drunk. I just like a few glasses to relax in the evening but apparently....according to my friend “it’s too much”

So, is it??

Yes it’s a lot. 4 bottles a week is way over 14 units so you’re prob damaging your liver long term. The more you drink, the more tolerance you build up so that’s why you’re functioning ok. If I drank a bottle of an evening I’d be in bed the next day.
And people under-estimate their drinking.

It’s not just about being drink at the time. You’re also increasing your risks of GI and liver cancers in the long run. So there’s that.

From a healthcare perspective yes it is far too much and will be affecting your liver already which will lead to issues further down the line.

Also if people think oh it’s only a couple of glasses per night etc but your liver won’t thank you for it

A lot of people sorry

It's too much. See NHS guidance for safer limits. It's not magically any safer to drink this much just cause your chores are all done and kids in bed.

bobstersmum · 08/08/2019 12:43

I think one regular glass of an evening is fine if its every night, but a whole bottle to yourself 4 times a week is excessive. And I can imagine that as much as you think it doesn't affect you, it does.

beanaseireann · 08/08/2019 16:11

A male friend of mine drinks a bottle of wine a night and 1and a half bottles on Friday and Saturday nights, 8 bottles a week !
I think he's a functioning alcoholic ( and heavy smoker - though he's given up now - miracle- and is vaping instead.
He's in denial.Sad
Id like him to be breathalysed by the police some morning- it would give him the impetus to stop I think.

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 08/08/2019 16:15

That is quite a lot. I think if you gave up for a few months, you'll be surprised how much better you feel.

Tensixtysix · 08/08/2019 16:17

Your alcohol tolerance is too high and you must be quite fat as well, unless you manage to burn it all off...

BillieEilish · 08/08/2019 17:48

The poster has said she is giving up the booze! FGs People RTFT.

And yes, I know people that drink a bottle of wine a night. Have done for years.

Lawyers, doctors, in London.

I'm similar OP and I don't feel it's problematic. It's not impacting anything and it's because I want and enjoy it not because I need it however I am cutting back because I'm saving for something specific in a set time frame and plan to put the wine money away each week as many smokers do who stop. £30 odd per week will make a big difference

Abraid2 · 09/08/2019 11:06

You’re deluding yourself if you don’t think it has an impact on your health.

dollydaydream114 · 09/08/2019 11:22

I wouldn't say it was 'unreasonable', but it's clearly not good for you. It's up to you, really.

I know a lot of people who drink wine most nights, but generally that would be sharing a bottle of wine with their partner or a friend, not drinking the whole bottle themselves.

I think it's highly unlikely that you're an alcoholic (I have quite a bit of experience of people with alcoholism, sadly) but yeah, you're certainly drinking more than is good for you and it's a slight concern that you can knock back a bottle of wine and not be tipsy.

feelingverylazytoday · 09/08/2019 18:03

cobblersandhogwash I'm not in nursing anymore (haven't been for a long while), so I couldn't say. I just wanted to point out that there are many conditions related to alcohol use/abuse, and they are often horrible.

Lindormilk · 09/08/2019 18:59

A bottle will last me 2 nights. If i drank a whole bottle a night id not remember going to bed. But in the past 8 days ive gad 2 bottles. DH thinks thats a lot but he rarely drinks.

Personally i think your figures are a bit high
