AIBU to suspect SIL is lying about broken foot

Last Wednesday my SIL told me she had broken her toe. This morning she arrives at my house (with her kids) and is sporting an ankle boot/brace claiming she has broken her foot. I am now expected to look after her kids and wait on her hand and foot. SIL has form for being a pathological liar. I suspect she's lying as my sister is adamant she saw her at the train station on Friday evening in heels! I'm tempted to call her out but my PIL's get very touchy when SIL is accused/called out. Also, they're only here for a couple of days and I've spent a fortune on food and just want an easy life.AIBU?

I would just keep your suspicions to yourself.

Nothing good will come of calling her out, you will just end up being the baddie.

thatistheq · 06/08/2019 11:05

SIL is wearing something similar to this. No surgery.

Just do the minimum for her, food and a hot drink. If it's only for two days.

Are her children reasonable kids? Do they get on with their cousins?

It's been lovely to see you SIL but you need to go now because whether she has broken her foot or not it is up to you whether to entertain her.

Damntheman · 06/08/2019 11:09

I'm currently four weeks into recovery g or a broken foot and have a boot exactly like the one pictured. I also walked about on said broken foot for a month before the doctor managed to get to the bottom of the mystery with an xray! It's possible.

Heels though.. I couldn't have worn heels through it but you never know.

thatistheq · 06/08/2019 11:09

Her kids are well behaved and I enjoy spending time with them. We have some nice things planned which I'm sure they'll love.

I’d be tempted to say that sister had seen her at the station! Is this a ploy to sit on her arse and be waited on by you?

How old are her dc?

OhRuddyHell · 06/08/2019 11:11

I'd stealthily ask her about it. How did she do it? Which bone is actually broken? Has she been signed off work? Was anyone else there when she did it?
I've also broken my toe and, whilst it was agony, there really is nothing they can do about it. It's odd that it's gone from toe to foot....
When is she saying this happened? After Friday when she was seen in heels?
I would have to say something about it I think. Sounds like she has form.

Damntheman · 06/08/2019 11:11

Omg don't suggest someone with a broken foot should move around and get the blood moving! No weight on it at all for 3 week, crutches! After 3 weeks I'm allowed to put weight down now but only on the heel. Getting about and looking after my kids has been such a bitch.

That said I have not set up camp at my SILs house.

Damntheman · 06/08/2019 11:12

It's not odd that the diagnoses has changed. I went from skin infection to broken foot as my doctor investigated. It's the third metatarsal broken.

thatistheq · 06/08/2019 11:12

Damntheman - did you have a cast at any point? I'm tempted to ask a couple of friends that are Drs but at the same time I don't want to give it air.

Ponoka7 · 06/08/2019 11:13

That boot is what they give you for a minor foot fracture.

I've had a broken toe and just been told to avoid weight bearing and wearing restrictive shoes.

ColaFreezePop · 06/08/2019 11:13

Can you take all the children and go out somewhere? Leave her with some sandwiches and water near by. After all it is the children's summer holiday and it is not fair to keep them stuck at home.

Damntheman · 06/08/2019 11:14

No cast OP. straight into the moon boot

KurriKurri · 06/08/2019 11:14

Are your PILs staying with you and your SILhas turned up ? if so, they can look after her and her kids, no reason that you should.
I'd ask questions about what went on at the hospital - how did they mistake a broken foot for a broken toe - an X ray would have clearly shown the difference.
It all sounds very odd. But I am cynical because whenever my parents stayed with me my oldest sister would suddenly have some sort for crisis so they had to go home, and it was always something like 'the dog may need an emergency operation come home immediately' which turned out to be 'the dog chewed a tea bag'
Once it was 'come home immediately the hospital think I may have 3 kidneys' (she doesn't have three kidneys)

Bjt if you want a quiet life, I'd just go with the flow and hope she leaves soon, give her as little attention as possible. or find a tedious job for her that she can do sitting down (Polishing the silverware - if you have silverware - I don't !)

thatistheq · 06/08/2019 11:14

Is this a ploy to sit on her arse and be waited on by you?

She's the only person I know who would actually do such a thing

Ponoka7 · 06/08/2019 11:15

"It's odd that it's gone from toe to foot..."

It isn't if the broken toe was diagnosed without an xray, or the first xray wasn't clear.

Anyonebut · 06/08/2019 11:15

Would she seriously go and buy that just to keep the pretence?

Imnotaslimjim · 06/08/2019 11:15

I thought I'd broken a toe but had actually broken the 5th metatarsal and wore a boot exactly like that for 6 weeks. No cast. Heels would have been impossible though, they still are now a month later.

TheFaerieQueene · 06/08/2019 11:16

I broke my ankle recently and wore a boot like that. I was able to walk and cook/clean. I even went to a rock concert at Wembley stadium.

Damntheman · 06/08/2019 11:17

Weird how it feels just like breaking a toe isn't it @I'mnotaslimjim ! I was convinced I'd probably broken a toe although doubted myself because I could still wiggle it about.

tempester28 · 06/08/2019 11:18

Some people just can't cope with the school holidays 🤪

washyourface · 06/08/2019 11:19

I broke my foot and had that kind of moon boot. I walked 5 miles to my mums house in it one day as it's so supportive and I was FED UP.
Honestly it's very probably she has actually broken her foot but it certainly doesn't mean she's incapable.

PookieDo · 06/08/2019 11:20

You can’t know whether she needs a cast or a boot from the internet because it depends on the type and place of the fracture

Break and fracture are the Same thing, fracture is the medical term
