DH has been offered a job in U.S, we have children aged 6 & 8. What concerns you most?

OP posts:
tttigress · 05/08/2019 23:08

None, go for it!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 05/08/2019 23:09

Children get shot at school in America.

ViserionTheDragon · 05/08/2019 23:09

Is the job fixed term or permanent? Is there a good renumeration package OP? I think those considerations are good starting points.

Twooter · 05/08/2019 23:09

No. I’m too frightened of all the guns.

OneEpisode · 05/08/2019 23:09

How much would your health insurance be?

adaline · 05/08/2019 23:09

No.

Politics, gun laws, health insurance...

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 05/08/2019 23:11

I'd be worried about the gun violence, the racism and Trump. Where in Texas is important too though, it can be very backwards, but I've been to Austin and it is fantastic!

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 05/08/2019 23:11

Health insurance, cost of housing in the area you want to live in, limited vacation, would you want to work/visa issues.

haverhill · 05/08/2019 23:11

No. The USA is a disturbed and disturbing place at the moment.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 05/08/2019 23:11

Oh yes, and the health system!

MrsApplepants · 05/08/2019 23:11

Yes in a heartbeat

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/08/2019 23:11

Well, have you seen the news this week?

I wouldn't move there for any amount of money.

DariaMorgendorffer · 05/08/2019 23:11

No

BlueSkiesLies · 05/08/2019 23:11

No. Texas is too religious, too right wing and too pro gun.

Also is that 2.5k net after all your cost of living adjustments? Or just a headline difference in gross salary?

HoorayItsTheHolidays · 05/08/2019 23:11

5k more a MONTH??? Hell yeah!! I'd be leaving for the US tomorrow!! Smile

Midlifecrisisat30 · 05/08/2019 23:12

I'd need to consider the cost of living and if that extra 5k may get swallowed by rent and other expenses. TBH gun crime in the USA would also concern me especially with two young children. School shootings etc seem far too common! That being said there are also lots of great things about the USA. The amazing weather in Texas and opportunities would be tempting.

FanSpamTastic · 05/08/2019 23:12

Do you have to give up work?

Will they pay health insurance for you and the kids or do you have to fund that out of the additional salary?

Will they pay for school fees? American schools can be up to 2 years behind UK. How long do you plan to be out there? How would you integrate your children back into UK schools if you came back in 5 years?

cardibach · 05/08/2019 23:12

This may seem an overreaction (and maybe it is) but I’m not going anywhere in the US even on holiday until a)Trump is gone and b)something is done about the gun issue. I certainly wouldn’t move there, and even more certainly not to somewhere with a gun culture like Texas.

BlueSkiesLies · 05/08/2019 23:12

Sorry 5k not 2.5k

flyingspaghettimonster · 05/08/2019 23:12

I would. It can't he more dangerous than where we are in philly and we can get a much bigger house for the money there. So long as it was just a stepping stone to living somewhere I would prefer, I'd go for it. I wouldn't stay more than 5 years though.

littlepeas · 05/08/2019 23:13

Guns. Also healthcare and racism.

VimFuego101 · 05/08/2019 23:13

Have you actually calculated what the take home amount will be after taxes and health insurance and copays/ deductibles?

PaquitaVariation · 05/08/2019 23:13

No. I’d rather be poor than have to wonder every morning if my kids are going to get shot at school today.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 05/08/2019 23:13

No. I love Texas and have travelled it quite extensively, but it isn't somewhere I'd like to bring up children. Their gun laws are unsettling at best. It's also an expensive place.

Kelsoid · 05/08/2019 23:13

As a half American who has more than once been tempted to start again stateside with my dads family....every time there are two things that have stopped me.

The fear of getting shot, and health insurance.

Family friend pays $1500 a month for a 'basic' plan for her family....barely covers anything more than a broken bone and she still has to pay $20 per doctors visit.
