DH has been offered a job in U.S, we have children aged 6 & 8. What concerns you most?

american base salaries are higher because the taxation is different.

Where in Texas? Austin for example is very expensive to rent.

Does it include medical insurance, education etc

No. Texas is too religious, too right wing and too pro gun.
Have you been?

TheFlis12345 · 05/08/2019 23:15

Completely depends where in Texas, it’s a massive state (bigger than France!).

Kittykatmacbill · 05/08/2019 23:15

No - else where in America and once trump has gone possibly. The lack of gun control, the health insurance system and awful politics are too much.

1stmonkey · 05/08/2019 23:15

Have to admit, current climate has massively put me off even holidaying in the US. Had considered moving there for work years ago but wouldn't even think of it now.
Each to their own though. Chances of getting caught up in something unpleasant are probably incredibly unlikely. Unfortunately in my experience, much easier to come across unpleasant people over there. Although i do live in a very open-minded, welcoming and free-thinking part of the world so maybe i've just been lucky/unlucky.

jesuschristwtf · 05/08/2019 23:16

Gosh I didn’t know Texas was that bad?!?

It isn't- I wonder how many of of the posters have actually been to Texas.

Austin and San Antonio are amazing

Texas is almost 3 times bigger that the whole of the UK.

MaraScottie · 05/08/2019 23:20

Not for an extra 10k a month.

Namingetiquette · 05/08/2019 23:22

You will be fine. Too much fear mongering here. You will be living in an affluent area with that kind of salary, and can look at international schools if you want to. People will love you and talk about you having an "accent" all the time.

Just a reminder, but bad things can happen anywhere. Stop being afraid of the world. There are some kids wearing stab proof vests in the UK too, no where is perfect. Take the opportunity and save as much money as possible, then be thrilled when the exchange rate is in your favour after Brexit.

CloserIAm2Fine · 05/08/2019 23:23

For myself absolutely, I would jump at the chance to experience it

For children absolutely not. Far too much gun crime and more worryingly a total refusal to address it with anything more meaningful than thoughts and prayers. I wouldn’t want my kids to go to school and have to worry about them getting shot or being terrified in a lockdown thinking they might die.

TeeniefaeTroon · 05/08/2019 23:24

No way. My husband was offered a fab wage, house with pool included and company car in New Orleans many years ago. I said no way, I wouldn't want my children growing up in America. It's just as well I said no as the place where would've been living was ripped apart by a hurricane a couple of years later 😱

AngelasAshes · 05/08/2019 23:24

Don’t forget the crappy education system in the US.
The schools are absolutely terrible compared to even the worst state school here.

For me though,,,it’s the gun violence. They have a mass shooting every day there. This weekend was only unusual in that over 10 were killed at each one. Mass shootings is just one part. 30,000 a year die in gun homicides.

Texas has major drugs problems too with the Mexico border being longest in the state.

I would. After I'd checked the net pay after Healthcare etc. I love Texas, well USA on the whole.

CatFaceCats · 05/08/2019 23:26

Nope, wouldn’t move to anywhere in the USA with the way it’s going.

TeeniefaeTroon · 05/08/2019 23:26

Apologies, I take it Mumsnet is still having problems 😂

FilthyforFirth · 05/08/2019 23:27

I have been to Texas, Austin and Dallas and it is a big fat no from me. The guns alone would stop me from ever moving there, never mind Trump...

Straysocks · 05/08/2019 23:31

It sounds (and may well be) a lot of money but there is soooo much you pay for in the US that you don't in the UK from toll roads to local taxes to refuse to various insurance. Fees for absolutely everything. If you have no problem with the current climate there and are tempted by the $ then try to get a realistic expectation of how much better off financially you would be. Also get built into contract some free flights back home for family reunion.

Is there a British school in Texas ? Or will they have private school paid for by the company ? Worth asking.

bad things can happen anywhere

Let's all move to Somalia then Confused

It depends on many things. Are you happy where you are? What the actual package is. Where your children would go to school. Can you work?

I wouldn't and I've lived in a few countries. America and Americans are great though. I wouldn't live there though. I have a friend who lived in Texas who loved it and her neighbours were great. People used to ask her 'where do you go to church?' Not if, where. Wouldn't suit me.
