Bitcoin...surprised there isn’t more uk discussion/press coverage?

Bitcoin has had an interesting few months, steadily rising.
Twitter feeds are full of American discussion about it, US press coverage etc.
Yet here it is still not v mainstream..
Aibu to be surprised ?
I’m neither a convert to bitcoin or an investor btw, I like to dabble and watching the charts /world press coverage really interests me.
Most (Uk)people I mention it to aren’t even aware you can purchase fractional bitcoin.

Yes @cailleachian! Absolutely.
In real life there’s a bit of an “ooh get you” attitude when talking about investment if you’re a woman. A bit of that was evident on this thread earlier (“well maybe YOU can afford to throw away £20”) . Yet nobody would question me spending it on eyebrows or nails or wine.
As I mentioned earlier, I have a local bitcoin atm and it’s often busy but never ONCE have I seen it being used by a woman.
The twitter feeds are full of men doing technical analysis peppered with misogynistic violent language and intermittent photos of their arses etc (I don’t know why), with the occasional tweet from a cleavage asking for a sugar daddy to pay in bitcoin. So this thread has been a relief and a revelation. I thank every single person who has taken the time to post links to fabulous resources, I have already downloaded, subscribed to podcasts, and loaded up my kindle Smile

I’ve learnt loads, thanks all

And again....... why do MY savings not feature in MY credit report. And again.... it's about whether you're a perpetual debtor.... this is what they want..... a never-ending cycle of people in debt.

It is Evil that BitCoins take so much energy to mine. Can never Support the Concept.

Dancinggertrude · 03/08/2019 19:35

@WickedGoodDoge I’d be really grateful for any recommendations for inspirational women in this field to follow on Twitter if you don’t mind sharing Smile

I really don’t understand the whole cryptocurrency thing at all so here is a shameful placemark so I can try and learn Grin

I hope you're joking.

DaisyDreaming · 03/08/2019 19:38

I risked £100 on xrp, the market crashed and lost so much value. Is it on the rise again?

Haggisfish · 03/08/2019 19:40

This is a fascinating thread-thanks op.

Cohle · 03/08/2019 19:41

A bit of that was evident on this thread earlier (“well maybe YOU can afford to throw away £20”) . Yet nobody would question me spending it on eyebrows or nails or wine.

That was me. I assure you it was nothing to do with your gender, or begrudging anyone an interest in investment.

Investing in bitcoin is unregulated and high risk. If you're in a financially vulnerable position investing in it is unlikely to be a good idea. You seem pretty dismissive of people less privileged than you are.

Cailleachian · 03/08/2019 19:43

I came off Twitter a while ago because of all the misogyny, but a woman centric crypto community on twitter would be awesome.

I've signed up again at @cailleachian.

Add me and recommend people for me to follow?

How much energy is expended in wars over oil.

Stanley71 · 03/08/2019 19:49

How is the electricity generated.... I think you'll find a lot is from renewables.

Paddybare · 03/08/2019 19:49

@Cailleachian

One thing I dislike about the whole crypto arena is the strong sense of tribalism and your post about an intense dislike for XRP because you don’t understand it epitomises that for me.

XRP fits every definition of a cryptocurrency so not sure why you have called it a pseudo-cryptocurrency when you freely admit that you don’t understand it.

For me, it’s currently the only crypto (with perhaps Vechain) that has a real-world, live use-case. Surely that’s something to be celebrated? Also, the FCA crypto guidelines published this week, gives XRP’s use-case in cross-border payments the green light.

Times are changing but there is still a lot of anti-XRP sentiment out there. Mainly from Bitcoin maximalists who can’t bear the thought that crypto use-cases may include something that’s not bitcoin. I truly believe that over the coming years we’ll see a variety of use-cases emerge across different coins. It really won’t be a one-size-fits-all thing.

Are you open to changing your mind on XRP? I can assure you, it’s not the bogeyman you think it is.

Stanley71 · 03/08/2019 19:53

cailleachian. Well said.

Dancinggertrude · 03/08/2019 19:54

No @cohle sorry I didn’t mean to offend you.
Just that this is a mindset that I often encounter.
At the mention of bitcoin people assume privilege etc etc, spare money , and so on. That investing in crypto is for millionaires.
When in reality you can buy a little and feel the joy when your coffee is paid for by your ‘winnings’ or whatever.
My background absolutely isn’t one of privilege.

Wars over oil? How can this be relevant?
Besides, Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right.

80%+ of world power supplies are not renewables.
Not like all renewables are good. Hydro is often a terrible source of 'renewable' energy, can destroy communities & ecosystems.

BitCoins are Evil to environment AND risky to individuals.

It shot up a couple of years back, the press was full of it, it then halved in value - they were accused of helping fuelling that rise so are being wary

Paddybare · 03/08/2019 20:00

@DaisyDreaming

If you can afford to swallow your loss for now, it would be worth holding for at least another year or two. I’d say it’s very likely to be worth more than £100 by then- although far from guaranteed of course.

Stanley71 · 03/08/2019 20:01

Bob loukas too. The 4 year cycle videos are super to listen to.

Cailleachian · 03/08/2019 20:02

@Paddybare

I see XRP in the same way as I see Tether and Libra. These are the three pseudo-cryptos that I (will in the case of Libra) avoid like the plague.

I understand that it has a real world use case and that its government approved, and thats why I dislike it so much. It only has that use case in a world that I am trying to exit.
