Drying washing on our balcony

We private rent in a block of 16 flats
The flats vary from rented to owned .
We put our washing on two airers today on our balcony
No offensive clothing etc on show
We came down to this message on the main front door
Are we being unreasonable!? Or is this person who wrote this note being unreasonable?

See the coat of the Prince of Wales here.
Not a wear once and through away.

See also Princess Anne. She’s worn the same clothes since 1973.

World Heritage site. Porto.

But imagine the house prices.

PancakeAndKeith · 03/08/2019 17:59

‘Throw away’ even.

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2019 18:09

PancakeAndKeith is it such a chore getting staff these days? :o

mumwon · 03/08/2019 18:15

Of course you shouldn't hang clothes out on Sunday(apparently lots of places had this rule!) attach split bamboo all around balcony which will hide your washing - simples! Unless you are not allowed to do that? Does anybody else put their washing on the balcony?

PancakeAndKeith · 03/08/2019 18:24

Joking aside,Stealth, I know a couple of people who have had to sell the house that has been in the family for generations because they simply couldn’t get they staff they needed to keep the place running.

Daisychainsgetbroken · 03/08/2019 18:32

Hope land lady agrees it is fine

justasking111 · 03/08/2019 18:37

much more environmentally friendly to dry outdoors, nothing like white sheets dried by sun and wind.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 03/08/2019 18:42

Drying clothes on a balcony is not a good look for a housing block, imagine if everyone did it?

Ever been to Tuscany? Everyone does do it. Washing on balconies is as ubiquitous there as terracotta pots. It isn't a problem; it isn't offensive; it's drying, clean laundry.

What's so lacking in people's lives that they even notice this minutiae, let along take the trouble to write (cowardly anonymous) notes about it? I just hope it's not someone who is spiteful enough to spill anything on the laundry. A small mind like this would be capable of it, I suspect.

justasking111 · 03/08/2019 18:58

My friend had french students staying once, the lady across the road said she had noticed clothes hanging out of the windows on hangars apparently when the girls undressed they put their clothes out overnight to air

There’s nothing wrong with hanging out washing in your garden. It’s a private space and your neighbors only have to see your washing from their upstairs windows, usually.

Flats are different. You are either displaying your laundry to the world if the balconies are on the outside of the building or to your neighbours if the balconies are on an internal courtyard, which is common.

Nobody is saying there’s anything wrong with drying clothes outdoors. But blocks of flats are unique. The main main point is that when you take out a rental agreement or leaseholders contract you need to READ it. All of this will be made by very clear. If you don’t like the rules, live elsewhere.

The last flat we lived in was set around a lovely courtyard of about 100 flats. They were very strict about what could go on balconies. We all adhered to it. I dried the washing on a clothes airer in my bedroom next to the open balcony door. No problem.

Another issue was pets. The lease made very clear NO PETS but true management committee (of residents) regularly had to deal with people sneaking small dogs and cats in. It wasn’t a question of whether people liked dogs or cats it was that you read the rules before you agree to move in.

As with most things in life, there are always people who think rules don’t apply to them.

Honeyroar · 03/08/2019 19:13

Tomorrow go to a cheap shop and buy a few clothes horses, put them up in the foyer and hang lots of pairs of big knickers all over them. Then print off several copies of the previously posted picture of Hyacinth Bucket and put them all around the snotty note on the door. (even better if you can find a picture of her sticking her finger up!).

Rockbird · 03/08/2019 19:16

But you could argue that there's a sensible reason why pets aren't allowed in flats, but absolutely no sensible reason why hanging washing on a balcony isn't, especially not these days. Balconies have had washing on them since balconies were invented, no one died from it. It's time to start using your common sense.

My neighbours hang their washing outside of the window aswell as no balcony.

TheStuffedPenguin · 03/08/2019 19:28

Was over in a biggish town this afternoon where they are building a lot of very nice low income/social flats and there was no laundry out . Rules i guess otherwise it would look a right mess esp as they are in the centre of town .

PookieDo · 03/08/2019 19:28

In Amsterdam on weekends everyone hangs their duvets out the window. I loved seeing that!!

PettyContractor · 03/08/2019 19:28

My lease says no laundry can be visible from outside. So not just balconys are out, you may not be able to dry clothes near windows. (Net curtains might make the latter possible though.)

It's a complete non-issue, I use an airer in the corner of my bedroom. (I have a washer-dryer but have never used the dyer since I realised the airer leaves the clothes less crumpled, and I don't have to separate cottons and synthetics before drying.)

I do have a dehumidifier to reduce humidity upstairs in winter when the windows are closed, but now that both bathrooms have 24-hour a day extractor fans running I think it may be redundant.

megletthesecond · 03/08/2019 19:41

Maybe if the government is serious about reducing climate change unlikely with Johnson in charge then petty rules like this will be scrapped.

PettyContractor · 03/08/2019 19:44

What's so lacking in people's lives that they even notice this minutiae, let along take the trouble to write (cowardly anonymous) notes about it?

Some people are bothered by cars on bricks in front yards, or broken mouldy sofas on the pavement with men in torn vests drinking beer on them. Should these things be prevented?

Is it OK for someone who owns a terraced house in a row of matching houses with the same face-brick colour to break the pattern by painting their house in pink and red stripes?

Just because you are oblivious to a particular kind of ugliness doesn't mean it doesn't exist for other people. Beauty may be subjective, it doesn't follow that it doesn't matter.

(When I'm dictator there will be a right for the residents of terraces to get together in a democratic association and impose an appearance code on their street, so that standards can be lifted and maintained. I would not want to live on a street where houses were not maintained in harmony with each other. I also wouldn't allow gardens to be concreted over for parking, or dustbins to be visible for more than the minimum amount of time necessary. And the planted gardens would be forcibly maintained by the association where the owners failed to. All expenses occurred by the association would come initially from a levy, but expenditure on individual houses would be recovered when a house was sold, in the same way unpaid property taxes are in some countries. )

Imagine. Just imagine the world seeing the clothes that you walk around in in the world with the world seeing them.

gobbyone · 03/08/2019 20:08

WHY ARE PEOPLE SO OFFENDED BY PANTS????!!

Simple but insane question, why can't any of you answer it?

Passthecherrycoke · 03/08/2019 20:09

No one here is offended by pants Hmm who is offended by pants? Why all the shouting?

gobbyone · 03/08/2019 20:11

Isn't that the whole point of the thread?

People walking around and getting the vapours over seeing pants on the line? I don't get it.
