We private rent in a block of 16 flats
The flats vary from rented to owned .
We put our washing on two airers today on our balcony
No offensive clothing etc on show
We came down to this message on the main front door
Are we being unreasonable!? Or is this person who wrote this note being unreasonable?

Your balcony looks high enough to hold the shorter version of the dryer you currently have. If you got two they would come below the line of sight and you won't be harassed by other residents.

AutumnalLeaves38 The Chamber of Commerce in the town I live in banned the shops from selling lotto tickets for about two years when the National Lottery started.

gaining traction on Twitter now too

@avamiah the balcony is your exit. In Many blocks fire plan is that the resident goes onto the balcony and await rescue from the fire service, who will bring the necessary equipment to bring residents down from their balconies. It’s very common- it’s a route out of the property that avoids lifts/ stairs

As long as there's nothing in your lease to prevent it, they can sod off

Lulu49 · 05/08/2019 04:53

Put it back out

snitzelvoncrumb · 05/08/2019 05:12

I rented a flat, and we weren't allowed to dry washing on the balcony. Unfortunately as the side of the balcony was clear so you couldn't get a way with it. I hung up an old cream sheet (a similar colour to the building) over the edge so you couldn't see the washing.

Unburnished · 05/08/2019 07:30

I used to live in a newbuild maisonette and there were all kinds of restrictive covenants in place, including no bins out before 7pm, no satellite dishes and no washing dried outdoors. It’s to prevent the place looking scruffy and as others have said, it’s a slippy slope and some will take the piss. Awful note though.

NoTheresa · 05/08/2019 10:17

Aside from the council estate reference, I am in agreement with the writer of the note.
I imagine it looks unsightly.

NoTheresa · 05/08/2019 10:18

And yes, it is the thin end of the wedge.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/08/2019 10:21

Exactly, one day it's some washing, the next a raggedly old sofa and then it's only a matter of weeks before the renegade washing hanger is setting fire to cars Hmm.

The Daily Mail are stuck for content today: www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-7321779/Woman-left-fuming-neighbour-says-dry-washing-outside-not-council-estate.html

PancakeAndKeith · 05/08/2019 13:23

Oh I see. So the fail could get one even when we couldn’t.

fedupwithcookingfromscratch · 05/08/2019 13:23

I think it's even more important to line dry your clothes if you are renting.
You'll be financially responsible for the mould forming on the walls otherwise!

You can tell a lot from a person's handwriting. In this instance, I'd say the author is clearly pretty common

I know you’re joking but actually, if you’d ever lived in a block of flats with balconies, you’d know that laundry really is the thin end of the wedge. They have to say no to everything otherwise you can guarantee laundry quickly turns into old furniture, then a mattress that you don’t have transport to take to the tip, then kids bikes, old toys etc

Emmabryant123 · 05/08/2019 14:30

Our block of flats says nothing to be stored in hallways etc and we don't
We actually have a specific bike storage area but we store my daughter's bike and buggy inside in our cupboard.
Never have I seen furniture left laying around hallways and balconies

*Well I’ve just checked and it seems you are allowed to hang up your washing in Poundbury.

All sorts of shit you can’t do though.*

I just had a read of them - loved the one about allowing "His Royal Highness" access to the property - fuck that! No parking your boat in the drive either, or fixing your car. I wonder how far they take that? Is replacing a wiper blade or light bulb ok? What about changing an air filter?

I could envisage m'learned friends making a pretty penny about when maintenance becomes a repair.

Catsinthecupboard · 05/08/2019 15:54

With all of the "whingeing" about climate/environment etc. I never understand the unhappiness about line dried clothes.

It's far better for the environment to use solar/wind clothes drying over machine drying.

supermommyof4 · 05/08/2019 15:59

Oh it's on Facebook now just seen it

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/08/2019 16:12

FFS at the papers! You can tell it's Summer silly season. Nothing to report other than other people's conversations.

PettyContractor · 05/08/2019 17:08

Where else are you supposed to dry it if you live in a flat?

I dry mine on a airer inside. Works fine, even in winter, when all the windows are closed. I do take care to monitor and minimise humidity inside.

I don't think there's much advantage to drying outside compared to inside with windows open. With windows closed I suppose it may take a bit longer, if humidity is higher and higher temperature doesn't offset that, but I'm not sitting there watching it so don't really care exactly how long it takes.

animalprintfree · 05/08/2019 21:38

Washing on balconies does look very tacky... but, needs most I suppose Confused
