Emmabryant123 · 03/08/2019 11:37

We private rent in a block of 16 flats
The flats vary from rented to owned .
We put our washing on two airers today on our balcony
No offensive clothing etc on show
We came down to this message on the main front door
Are we being unreasonable!? Or is this person who wrote this note being unreasonable?

If there is no where else to dry it then it’s on the balcony. I like a good airing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2019 20:39

It's odd that people get upset about drying washing outside. It's just like giant bunting.

4legsandawaggytail · 04/08/2019 20:40

I agree with Queenioqueenio. Write on the note 'Fuck Off I own my properly you snob', even if you don't. Give them something to think about, judgemental twats.

Passthecherrycoke · 04/08/2019 20:41

They’re not American rules fumaHmm people were living in flats in the U.K. before America was even founded 🤣

Bookworm4 · 04/08/2019 20:47

My very houseproud Glaswegian granny would openly judge people on their laundry, if there wasn’t a sparkling line of washing out on every available drying day then said wife was a sloven, dread to think what she’d have to say about all you tumbly queens and ‘oh my can’t have laundry outside’, you’d be deemed filthy lazy middens!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2019 20:47

I'm really enjoying the futureshoot article that was posted up the thread. Fascinating!

TheCherries · 04/08/2019 20:51

From your picture of the airer OP I would personally say go one tier lower so you get to dry your washing but it doesn’t tower over the balcony

lboogy · 04/08/2019 20:59

The note writer is a snob but I personally hate to see clothes hanging on the balcony. It's really unsightly. We live in a house and dry our things on a foldable dryer. Occasionally if it's hot then I hang them outside.

The trick with mould is to dry small amounts of clothes at a time and leave a window open - even in winter

Trudij123 · 04/08/2019 21:03

In the process of RTFT and @Cornettoninja your human centipede comment made me laugh a lot....

Back when I’ve finished!!

Malvinaa81 · 04/08/2019 21:03

Don't at all agree with the tone of this nasty note.

However a residential block with dozens of balconies full of drying clothes to me would look untidy, and that's why some developments have a lot of rules and covenants.

Providing yours doesn't have such rules, it's no one else's business.

I would on no account reply or commence a dialogue with the author- you'd drive yourself mad!

tenredthings · 04/08/2019 21:04

Finding it hard to understand what the problem is. So long as it's not hanging over the balustrade, Flats are for living in, everyone needs to dry their washing. That poster is awful.

Lmcd18 · 04/08/2019 21:10

This person is an idiot, dry your washing

Fuma · 04/08/2019 21:12

Passthecherrycoke there are entire neighbourhoods in America where people don't dry washing outside for aesthetic reasons. Historically this wasn't an issue in flats in the UK but new build covenants increasingly are adopting this American mindset.

As has been pointed out up thread it's an attitude that would draw blank looks on the continent where apartment living is much more common and all of these practical issues are thought of.

stucknoue · 04/08/2019 21:13

I think it's just on balconies that's considered trashy, people use tumble dryers and airing rooms in "posh" apartments. Outside drying areas are normal in houses even posh ones

UserNameDeletedShortly · 04/08/2019 21:16

Ah. So it had nothing to do with regulations and contracts, Jobsworth's just a nosey, snobby shit-stirrer. Cowardly, too.

Passthecherrycoke · 04/08/2019 21:18

Fuma I’ve been leases nearly 100 years old that state no washing on balconies. It’s not just new builds by any means.

Passthecherrycoke · 04/08/2019 21:19

(Oh and I know that America have rules re washing, but so do many countries, including much of Europe)

DGV · 04/08/2019 21:19

To my mind these insane American rules about washing on balconies are yet another example of how we as a country just don't do apartment living very well. It's all about what looks nice rather than practical use of space. New builds with no storage, open plan everything, no rubbish chutes and not being able to utilise the little outdoor space you have in a sensible way are all part of the same problem

Where has the OP or anyone else said that it's an American rule? Confused
I was born in 1968, lived in council flats with balcony & rubbish shute until 1976. We then had a council house, with garden and washing line until 1997 (my parents bought the house at some point in time prior to that, not sure when though). I'd already moved out 3-4 years earlier, I bought a leasehold flat, no balcony or outside drying space so I'd use a collapsible clothes horse inside, with windows open. I had mould in every room. After my son was born I would put the clothes horse outside my front door (we were top floor so only the other neighbour used the landing. She never raised an issue, just when she was trying to sell her flat she asked if I'd mind not having the washing out if she had a viewing. No problem for me, I obliged.
We then moved to another leasehold flat (ground floor) with communal garden and 2 whirly gig washing lines for 6 flats. 3 of the flats had balconies, I didn't. Us none balcony owners and 2 of the 3 balcony owners used the outside washing lines. The one flat that didn't used their balcony to dry washing; clothes horse and over balcony racks. I was jealous, wishing I could dry my washing right outside my door.
Each time my mum visited she would make a disparaging remark if these neighbours had their washing out! What does it matter to anyone else? I've asked her why she had a problem with it, "it doesn't look nice", so what do your neighbours think about your washing, on the line, in your garden? "well, we're owners" So are they, ffs!
I know live outside of the UK and it's definitely the done thing to dry outside. Last year we bought a house on a gated development of 20 houses. Only about 25% dry washing outside (we do!), the otgers, I presume, use tumble dryers. It's madness! We have high enough temperatures that mean your washing is dry about 2 hours after you put it out. Why would you pay the electricity and damage our wonderful planet by drying any other way?
In winter I use a clothes horse inside with the doors open, only if it's raining.
Sorry, I know this is a long, rambling post but I just don't understand what is so wrong with someone putting washing outside? I love to see clean fresh clothes/bedding/whatever getting a good drying/airing.
As for my mum, she'd probably write a note like tge OPs neighbour did. Totally forgetting her roots!
OP Hang your washing out, loud and proud! Grin

DryBananaHippyHat · 04/08/2019 21:19

How do you dry small amounts of clothes? Leave the rest in the machine until the first lot is dry?

Passthecherrycoke · 04/08/2019 21:20

Sorry, typos:

Fuma I’ve seen leases nearly 100 years old that state no washing on balconies. It’s not just new builds by any means.

hoxtonbabe · 04/08/2019 21:24

This really is the world gone mad.. I didn’t think this was actually such a widespread thing!

Given the current climate The government should actually make it illegal for these stupid rules to be allowed. Sod looking untidy, to me I just think someone is drying their clothes and not putting on a dryer.. i don’t see what the problem is.

It’s dark now but if I could I would have snapped and posted a photo of the house at the back of me that current has their bedsheet drying out their window.. the op neighbors would collapse if they saw that

MyOtherProfile · 04/08/2019 21:32

Having seen the photo of your laundry first I was surprised since you have a brick wall so it's almost impossible to see the laundry. If you had a lower rack nobody would know.
Secondly you have MY airer! So clearly you have great taste anyway Grin

pooopypants · 04/08/2019 21:32

I'd hang my frilliest / crotchless knickers out. In full view.

No. Fucks. Given.

Why should you pay to use a tumble dryer when the weather is glorious!?!?

Lapun · 04/08/2019 21:51

Some of the answers here are very unthinking. I have lived in my flat for 34 years and we have restrictions in our lease on many things: no ball games in garden, no pets allowed, nothing on the fire escape/balcony. These rules were agreed by the owners in our 999 year leases. If you do not want to abide by the rules then move. If you insist on putting your washing on the balcony, your landlord will be told and if he wants to keep good relations with other owners, he will tell you not to just defy the block rules. I don’t want to see my neighbours washing thank you!

DryBananaHippyHat · 04/08/2019 21:58

I think you're the one who is unthinking. Accept what you're told, don't question it, abide by all the rules even when they're ridiculous, be a good girl.

Give me one good solid reason why washing shouldn't be hung outside. And in the current climate, not wanting to look at it is not a good reason.
