Drying washing on our balcony

Emmabryant123 · 03/08/2019 11:37

We private rent in a block of 16 flats
The flats vary from rented to owned .
We put our washing on two airers today on our balcony
No offensive clothing etc on show
We came down to this message on the main front door
Are we being unreasonable!? Or is this person who wrote this note being unreasonable?

It's a shit rule I'm happy to risk eviction over, doubt they could be bothered with the paperwork

Reckon so too @bigredship.
After all, how often does a leaseholding co. bother about REAL complaints like smoke, noise, or threatening behaviour? They can't be arsed, & don't want to spend the money.
Their financial M.O. is usually to do as little as possible, keep to the lowest possible overhead, & collect the £££.
Engaging in a squabble about feckin' laundry could screw profits for a year if pursued all the way to court.

TheStuffedPenguin · 04/08/2019 09:57

gobbyone yet again people don't read ...600 k is the price of a house with a garden and laundry facilities . The flats with balconies are social housing as required by law. No one is allowed to put laundry in their front garden or on the verandahs . The flats do not cost 600k. They are given by a housing organisation .

I have always lived in a flat.
I always dry my own clothes on a clothes horse.
I never put them outside on a balcony.
I leave the clothes horse near a window or balcony door and crack it open when I’m not in that room, I leave them in the hallway when I am (where there is generally no window). I have used dehumidifier ball (thingys) and it ensures there is no excess moisture making my flat damp.
I’ve lived in harmony for many years now with my neighbours as they do the same, there are never any clothes left to dry on any of our balconies. My neighbours appear to be clean and my clothes always smell fresh. We are also not posh snobs, we are just normal people trying to pay off our mortgages.
I don’t ever use a tumble drier, so I’m not destroying the environment (or my clothes for that matter).
So, you can manage just fine without clothes needing to dry on a balcony.

Reply from landlady saying to carry on if we like as the message isn't from her or the management agent. There is nothing in our lease agreement to say we can't. My partner has double checked that

Poundbury. #10 wtf is a bird dog

I have no idea. I wonder if they mean working gun dogs.

TheStuffedPenguin · 04/08/2019 10:01

It's not your lease agreement though that is concerned . It is the deeds and tbh the one who would be at odds with that would be your landlady . She will take the flack first if not allowed.

Yay. Wash everything you own and dry all of it.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/08/2019 10:02

Brilliant news OP. Crack on and get the washing on.

Fishfeedingfrenzy · 04/08/2019 10:08

Great OP. Keep hanging it out. Let's see how many notes they leave before a) they give up, or b) they have the balls to speak to you face-to-face.

I think you can tell by most of the replies on here that it wasn't you BU, so don't take any more crap.

drowningincustard · 04/08/2019 10:13

I would have to reply
'In future would the anonymous note writer please come and talk to me, as that is the neighbourly thing to do. Given the lack of name and flat number I am guessing that you are aware that there are no covenants on the lease regarding washing and that your note is both rude and supercilious, kind regards Jane #23'

Zbag14 · 04/08/2019 10:14

I own my flat, but not the lease. When the lease holder visited to asses one of the other flats they spotted my airer and demanded I take it down. I did take it down, and in its place I installed a full size washing line that folds away into the wall. Told my lease holder to take me to court if they want to pursue it. That was 8 years ago, haven't heard a thing since.

diddl · 04/08/2019 10:14

"The person who wrote the note is being entirely reasonable.....but only if you are living in Germany 😅"

What does that mean?

gobbyone · 04/08/2019 10:17

@TheStuffedPenguin

Housing associations don't 'give' people homes btw.

So below what price point do you loose the right not to see washing and the right to have decent laundry facilities.

Also, drying indoors (particularly with children) is unhealthy and bad for the environment. Doesn't that bother at all?

Emmabryant123 · 04/08/2019 10:19

We have a 3 year old as well so really don't want mould for the sake of her health to. :)

I hate bloody rude notes. And cowardly anonymous ones. However I dry all my laundry on hangers inside overnight. It is dry by morning. It doesn't look nice on balconies but rebellious me would probably do it again after such a horrible note.

myrtleWilson · 04/08/2019 10:24

The drying revolution will be led by your landlady - huzzah!

Passthecherrycoke · 04/08/2019 10:26

Op that’s brilliant- get that washing out now! And use some of the replies here for other Pa notes.

Owners can’t be evicted but leasehold clauses can be enforced by the court, like any other contractual obligation. It’s very unlikely the HA/ management company would do this for washing alone, but someone repeatedly refusing to comply with the rules of their lease is probably doing it in other places, all of which might make it worthwhile to take them
To court

origamiunicorn · 04/08/2019 10:40

It's not their decision, of it doesn't say in your contract them continue. Who are they anyway thinking they're the balcony police!

I'd be tempted to hang my knickers out now too 😆

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/08/2019 11:05

Gosh, enough snobby people on this thread. And even more "washing is so unsightly ones" aesthetes Grin

In a garden (or flat facing away from the street) it's at least private. I know my neighbours wouldn't like to see my Knickers drying and I don't really want to see theirs either!

My garden is reasonably private (no houses at the back, only one nextdoor neighbour). From my back bedroom I can see nextdoor's and nextdoor but one. From the front bedroom I can see two other neighbours. I couldn't tell you whether they hang knickers out or not, as I don't spend a lot of time watching other people's washing dry. I'm delighted to be surrounded by sensible neighbours with washing lines Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/08/2019 11:22

The only interest I take in other people's washing on the lines is to see if they are getting a good blow about so as decide whether I'm putting mine out.

Alsohuman · 04/08/2019 11:28

Interesting concept that housing associations “give” flats @TheStuffedPenguin. I thought they rented them out to their tenants for money.

OMGshefoundmeout · 04/08/2019 11:29

Carry on as you are. Perhaps stick another note under that one saying ‘I prefer to ignore anonymous notes - X from Flat Z’

BlackCatSleeping · 04/08/2019 11:47

Is it just the underwear that bothers people? Surely you see your neighbors wearing their clothes, so it shouldn’t be that offensive seeing their clothes on the washing line?
