To think a ‘spa day’ sounds pretty miserable, really?

I just do not get why these are supposed to be relaxing. Or why they’re the MN cliche recommendation for frazzled mothers especially. People massaging you! And faffing around with your fingernails and toenails! And plastering your face in goo! If I wanted to be touched all the time and have yoghurt rubbed into my face I could just stay at home with my children.

I know different people like different things and all (although if you disagree with me you are objectively wrong obvs), but are there other people who shudder at the very thought of spa treatments?

OP posts:

Yes, they are quite awful.

I got a pedicure yesterday and the estecthican gave me an impromptu shoulder massage.

Ugh.

Please, no.

managedmis · 01/08/2019 20:10

The words 'sex pond' were used on here recently to sum up a jacuzzi, makes sense really

PooWillyBumBum · 01/08/2019 20:11

Not my thing either. Don’t mind going for a massage or beauty treatment in the spa on hols then fannying around in the general spa area for half an hour after but a whole day is too much. Am bored very quickly.

DH and I went to one in the UK a few months ago and both agreed we wouldn’t bother again. Would rather relax by going on a loooong child free walk, having a leisurely lunch somewhere posh then maybe book and glass of vino in the garden.

Gladiolus45 · 01/08/2019 20:12

I'm with you on the not being touched OP, but surely spa days are a chance to hang out with your friends for a day and gossip like mad whilst occasionally doing a length of breast stroke with your head out of the water so you hair doesn't get wet (whilst still chatting) - or have I been doing it wrong all these years?

Peanutbuttericecream · 01/08/2019 20:13

I love a spa day. All that relaxing in bubbles and yes the hot stones, bring it on.

Mokepon · 01/08/2019 20:16

I'm sure sex pond is a hot tub.
Who the fuck.could manage to have it off in a spa jacuzzi🤔🤔🤔

AuntieMarys · 01/08/2019 20:16

I used to go to one once a year for 3 nights....for anout 12 years. On my own. Bliss
Gorgeous food, treatments and peace. It was quite a holistic place as opposed to a hen party destination. Quite a few thespian there.
I don't go now as I have no stress in.my life anymore Smile I do haveva monthly Dermalogica facial and the odd massage

sonjadog · 01/08/2019 20:18

Not for me. I have been to spas and I can manage about an hour before I start getting really bored. A great day off for me is heading out with the dog for a long walk in the countryside, tasty pub lunch and sitting somewhere outdoors and reading my book, and then heading home.

Wincarnis · 01/08/2019 20:20

A Spa day is my idea of absolute hell

Aragog · 01/08/2019 20:22

Like others I'm not bothered by the treatments, but I do like the idea of relaxing and chillings, sat in a dressing gown with a drink in hand. The odd dip in the pool, or a visit to the sauna, ice cave and steam room - rest sat chatting with a friend in quiet and calm surroundings.

Booksandwine80 · 01/08/2019 20:23

Pre kids I loved a spa day-post kids it would feel a waste and would rather check into a hotel and sleepGrin

1066vegan · 01/08/2019 20:28

Never tried one and didn't think I'd like one because I hate the idea of other people touching me. This thread had made me reconsider very slightly. The idea of having time on my own and alternating between swimming and reading does sound good.

user1493494961 · 01/08/2019 20:28

Tried it but not for me either.

CensorshipHereIsAJoke · 01/08/2019 20:40

The spa is my spiritual home, so yabVu.

CurlsandCurves · 01/08/2019 20:49

I love a spa day. Always go alone. Read my kindle, have a bit of a swim, read some more, have a nap, have a facial or massage if I fancy it.

I chill out, do what I want and don’t have to speak to anyone if I don’t want to. Heaven.

TinyMystery · 01/08/2019 21:02

Not fussed about a ‘spa day’. I go to a nice gym, if I wanted to fanny about in a sauna/steam room I could. But I’d love a massage/facial/pedicure! I’m not girly at all but I’m very receptive to touch and find it really relaxing!

SleepingStandingUp · 01/08/2019 21:19

@Will0wtree where do you go where people stare at you if your a woman alone? Gilead??

@Buyitinbamboo def don't go pregnant. I have a weekend away with friends booked Inc access to spa and the only good thing is I'll be 7 months pregnant, the poo is heated, ill be weightless and it's free

NecklessMumster · 01/08/2019 21:27

It must depend on the spa? My last massage was in my local beauticians, in
a glorified basement. It was supposed to be a hot stone massage. The one's on my back were nice, then she wafted some lavender oil under my nose and placed a stone in each of my hands whereupon i got the giggles and an urge to chuck them

gobbynorthernbird · 01/08/2019 21:30

@bakedbeanzontoast have a look at Titanic Spa in Huddersfield. Spa days aren't my thing but pals go there a few times a year and love it.

TrickyKid · 01/08/2019 21:34

Not bothered about spa days but I do go for a massage every week. Absolute bliss and so relaxing.

Sunshinegirl82 · 01/08/2019 21:34

@NecklessMumster it definitely depends on the spa. A proper spa experience (somewhere like Champneys) is lovely (in my opinion). It's like a massive country house resort with a lake, definitely not a basement!

Inches · 01/08/2019 21:39

I thought exactly what Plinkety said before I spent a day at a spa, and continued to think it even more vehemently afterwards.

PapayaCoconut · 01/08/2019 21:44

I love spa but I never do any treatments. I love the pools, steam rooms and champagne relaxation.

GnomeDePlume · 01/08/2019 22:03

It's the idea of spending the day constantly adjusting my dressing gown and walking out of the slippers which would bother me most. The worry of accidental dressing gown gaping in the restaurant would leave me more tense than when I arrived.

ASMR is perfect for me. I can have my ears cleaned, head massaged then fall asleep. All in the comfort of my own bed and nobody touches me.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 01/08/2019 22:08

I would rather chew my own eyeballs.

If I want to sit around and read a book in peace and quiet I can do that at home, without having to pay to sit in a damp room in a bath robe that makes me look like an inpatient in an institution .

There was quite the vogue for spa day hen dos recently...so, all of the above plus having to make polite 'girly' conversation with people I only clapped eyes on 20 minutes ago. Mmm, lovely.
