To think a ‘spa day’ sounds pretty miserable, really?

I just do not get why these are supposed to be relaxing. Or why they’re the MN cliche recommendation for frazzled mothers especially. People massaging you! And faffing around with your fingernails and toenails! And plastering your face in goo! If I wanted to be touched all the time and have yoghurt rubbed into my face I could just stay at home with my children.

I know different people like different things and all (although if you disagree with me you are objectively wrong obvs), but are there other people who shudder at the very thought of spa treatments?

OP posts:
AlansLeftMoob · 01/08/2019 19:15

Nope, it's my idea of absolute HELL. I'd rather lick Boris Johnson's big toe than spend a day at a Spa.

Userplusnumbers · 01/08/2019 19:17

Wearing a dressing gown all day - check
Drinking champagne in said dressing gown - check
No children - check
"Swimming" in an amazing heated pool (and pretending the vry sedate laps are exercise) - check
Getting a facial with a neck and shoulder massage so my skin feels like alabaster - check

I get its not for everyone OP - but I will never understand those people I'm afraid

Babysharkdoodoodoodo · 01/08/2019 19:18

I pay £25 add on with my gym (£22/month) to use the Spa whenever I want and get a free treatment once a month. It is bloody lovely to do an hours work out after work , then be able to swim and then sit in the sauna/steam room/ aromatherapy room and then the foot spa and hot tub.
Sometimes I just go to use the spa if I'm on a workout rest day. Just to escape life for an hour and chill (steam gently).

Userplusnumbers · 01/08/2019 19:19

Oh - I forgot the afternoon snoze on the day bed with all the soft lighting, floaty curtains, nice aromas, and relaxing music!

NoSauce · 01/08/2019 19:21

Well, thankfully a “spa day” is nothing like your goady little description OP and hence why they’re so damn popular Smile

NoSauce · 01/08/2019 19:22

IHaveBrilloHair “ other people’s foot skin??? “ what do you mean?

Daffodil2018 · 01/08/2019 19:22

I would give my eye teeth for a spa day right now. I'd love to go with a friend so we could catch up in between treatments. I'd have a swim, go in the steam room, a hot stone massage, a delicious healthy lunch and then a little snooze. Maybe read my book. No baby, no chores, no phone. Bring it on!

sundaymorningblues · 01/08/2019 19:24

Yeah, I'm not a fan either, OP. I don't like massages, don't deal well with the heat and there's only so much swimming that I can do. I'm glad it works for other people but it's just not my idea of fun, sadly.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 01/08/2019 19:27

I'd rather just go to a quiet restaurant on my own, eat a nice meal in peace, read a book and drink lots of wine 😂

Starlight2004 · 01/08/2019 19:30

Not a massive fan of treatments but I love a good spa day! I find them so relaxing. I don't know what's not to like about lovely lunches, warm pools, steam rooms, chilled drinks and a natter with friends. Bliss!

Dowser · 01/08/2019 19:32

Would be hell for me
Can’t think of anything worse

abitoflight · 01/08/2019 19:36

God no
Would rather run glass in my eyes than have a spa day

Happyspud · 01/08/2019 19:38

Oh I love it. The place I go with my friend every year is wonderful. We stay overnight so total brain break from the family graft. The spa has a cocktail bar in it so we tend to get a bit pissed in the jacuzzi. And read magazines on heated loungers in dressing gowns. Bliss. Then dinner in the really excellent fine dining restaurant. Then the gin bar and early bed. Huge hotel breakfast buffet in the morning.

There can’t be a single person who wouldn’t like at least one of those things?

Will0wtree · 01/08/2019 19:40

Don't like people touching me (shivers), don't care about my nails (providing they're short and clean, and I can do that myself) Can't swim, (and don't want to learn as I don't enjoy being in water longer than I have to).

No, they don't appeal to me. I like the idea of a getaway, but not Spa style. Maybe if they had a getaway hotel for women on their own, where no-one would look funny at you in the restaurant for sitting on a table on your own. And there were pretty grounds to wander and find a spot and read a book. Maybe various craft classes you could drop in on to learn a new craft or an instrument or something. And a nice cinema showing films that you could watch with a glass of wine... Hmmm, yes, that I might do.

Happyspud · 01/08/2019 19:44

Will0wtreeGrin you have just described literally every hotel on earth (except for craft classes and instrument lessons. Not a cinema but a TV for movies). Nobody gives a shiny shit if a woman stays in a hotel alone and eats in a restaurant alone. I wouldn’t give it a second thought!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/08/2019 19:47

Nope. I don't particularly like being touched. DH and DC excepted, obviously...

GG20 · 01/08/2019 19:51

Nope, it's my idea of absolute HELL.

Mine too. Cannot imagine it being in any way pleasant.

Obi73 · 01/08/2019 19:51

Make me physically sick 🤢 Thanks but no thanks 🙄

bakedbeanzontoast · 01/08/2019 19:52

Can anyone recommend a good one in Yorkshire?

Mokepon · 01/08/2019 19:56

You're not doing it properly!!!
Go alone. OR Choose a companion carefully.
Arrive at spa. Have a coffee and peruse any available literature, daily newspaper or recent magazine.
Change into swimwear/ robe.
Pretend to swim 10 lengths of tiny spa pool.
Take advantage of sauna/steam room/ jacuzzi/massage shower either alone or chatting with ccc (carefully chosen companion).
Eat a delicious lunch.
Return to spa and repeat swim/sauna etc or partake in a lovely facial/back massage or whatever.
Relax in quiet room with obligatory herbal tea and an apple so you can feel all healthy and virtuous after eating chips and cake at lunch.
It's just a day away from the usual demands of work/home/the daily grind.
Peace and quiet, a bit of nice grub and a chat in.peace.

Nicolastuffedone · 01/08/2019 20:01

I love a spa day, but I certainly wouldn’t like to be ‘poked’ or have yoghurt rubbed on my face! Which spa was this??? I want to avoid it.....

RingtheBells · 01/08/2019 20:05

I have far better things to do with my time

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 01/08/2019 20:07

Oh no, I always though this until I went to one, it was the Most relaxing experience just swimming, sitting in the jacuzzi, chatting with friends, I loved it so much.

The massage was hideous and I wouldn't have any treatments again, it o am a convert to a spa. Not a day though, I want to stay the night and really chill out.

Buyitinbamboo · 01/08/2019 20:08

Urghh I'm pregnant and everyone keeps telling me to go for spa day. Why??? I cant go in jacuzzis or steam rooms/saunas and I think treatments are limited (although I dont like people touching me either). I do not want a spa day. I do want cake.

Therarestone · 01/08/2019 20:09

Oooh love a spa. You don't have to have treatments, you can just enjoy a bit of peace in a child free environment!
