AIBU to be freaked out by my period?

Apologies for the potentially graphic details which are to follow, but I am stressed about my period.

This month I have a very strange period. It arrived 3 days early and it was bright red, scarlet blood. They were no blood clots and there was only one or two small strings of tissue. It just looks like I'm bleeding blood rather than menses. I'm now on day 3 and it's thinned out even more.

I'm 27, pregnancy test is negative. I don't think I'm ill. Why is this happening Sad

Forgot to say, I don't think it's menopause either.

Possibly a miscarriage

ISmellBabies · 01/08/2019 12:24

What contraception are you on? Sometimes the pill can change your periods that way. I wouldn't worry too much tbh.

Glitterandunicorns · 01/08/2019 12:27

Blimey @KnittingForMittens that's a bit harsh. Even if it's possible that is what the OP is experiencing, it's a bit blunt to suggest it that way.

Okbutwhy · 01/08/2019 12:28

ISmellBabies

What contraception are you on?

I'm not. I never have been and we are TTC actually KnittingForMittens but wouldn't the test have been positive if I had been pregnant?

Might just be bright red cos it’s early and fresher blood.
Mine was weird this month, finished then come back the next day and bright red.
Your periods can be affected by contraception or life style things like stress

MammaMia19 · 01/08/2019 12:30

Have you recently stopped contraception? That can affect it too

BlipBipel · 01/08/2019 12:37

I wouldn't be overly concerned tbh if you're not having any other symptoms.

3 days early isn't anything.

Bright red just means it's fresh blood rather than blood that has been there for a while. If it's runnier than usual it would make sense that it um comes out faster so doesn't get the chance to oxidize and darken.

As for the runniness, that by itself wouldn't concern me. All sorts can mess about with hormones which in turn affectswomb lining.

As long as you're not getting any other symptoms and it stops about when you'd expect it to I personally wouldn't worry.

BlipBipel · 01/08/2019 12:39

Ah just seen your TTC, kindly, could you be looking in more detail than you would normally? Is it possible it's always kind of been like it but you've not paid that much attention before?

BlipBipel · 01/08/2019 12:39

*you're

Lweji · 01/08/2019 12:44

What do you mean by strings of tissue?

It could be implantation bleeding or a missed miscarriage. The test might be negative if it hasn't implanted properly yet and it's not producing enough hormone.
I'd wait a few days, see what happens, test again if necessary and see a doctor, who might ask for an early scan if they suspect a pregnancy.

No, I don't think so. It's always thick and a deeper red. I always pay attention to it because I run through many pads in the chest couple of days and again sorry for the TMI it feels like a thick sticky goopy layer on my pad in the morning. This time nada.

Lweji

What do you mean by strings of tissue?

Well just small pieces of bloodied tissue which are held together by, I assume, mucus, so it looks like strings.

This is what my period normally looks like. I doubt that you are bleeding actual blood. But I would suggest seeing a doctor if you continue to have uncharacteristic peripds.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 01/08/2019 13:28

If I were you I'd take another pg test and forget about it until next month and see how that one is.

dontgobaconmyheart · 01/08/2019 13:31

Have you come off a form of hormonal contraception or the coil to TTC OP? If so they are often different afterwards and not like you remembered them being, especially if you were on it some time. They can also take time to settle.

To be honest this wouldn't concern me, I often have a period like this they vary month by month sometimes. Many, many factors can affect the timing or flow of a period other than illness and all are very normal- diet, stress, weight etc- If there are no other symptoms then I can see no cause for alarm really. If you are concerned though I would chat to a GP.

PookieDo · 01/08/2019 13:39

Have you had any scans or investigations?

Mine can be like this, mine is often bright red rather than dark. Then half way through it will get darker and darker and stringy. I have fibroids

Okbutwhy · 01/08/2019 13:40

dontgobaconmyheart

No, I have never been on any kind of hormonal contraception in my life.

To be honest this wouldn't concern me, I often have a period like this they vary month by month sometimes.

Mine is pretty much the same month in, month out, has been for as long as I can remember. This is why I'm worried, it doesn't tend to vary much at all.

Why don’t you speak to your doctor

flappi · 01/08/2019 13:42

If it’s unusual for you it’s worth mentioning to your GP .

Okbutwhy · 01/08/2019 13:55

Why don’t you speak to your doctor

Because I will need to take time off work for the appointment and I wanted to ask if anyone else had been in a similar situation or knew what could have caused this before I do that.

Lweji · 01/08/2019 15:04

That is what I would call unusual. Unless you're not quite aware of what tissue looks like.

PookieDo · 01/08/2019 15:09

None of us are doctors here but don’t go assuming menopause from 1 period
Our bodies do change as we age and as someone said there are a lot of other factors. Don’t panic but you can’t expect anyone here to tell you. You need to see a doctor. Don’t rely on internet diagnosis

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/08/2019 15:10

Sometimes my period is lighter or shorter or thinner bloody than usual and as long as it’s just the one rather than two or more in a row or I feel unwell or have any other symptoms, I just put it down to one of those things. Natural fluctuations in hormone levels and stress (and even temperature and weather, so an actual doctor once told me) can all affect how your uterus lines itself and thus your period.

If it’s really concerning you though, go and get a doctor to check it out if only for peace of mind.

flappi · 01/08/2019 15:32

Can you not speak to your doctor on the phone ?

Hello... just seeing if anybody has any advice or reassurance that this is normal!
I came off the contraceptive pill after about 10 years of being on it as we decided to start a family! I came off in August, and fell pregnant very quickly in October- unfortunately at 9 weeks I had a miscarriage. I had to take the medication to complete it.
I miscarried 12th dec and bled on and off for a few weeks(heavy to begin with then very light) until the beginning of January! There was only a short gap until I started my 1st period (I think it was my first anyway). I then started what I think is my second period since miscarrying on the 1st feb, however I won’t stop bleeding! I am now 13 days into it! To begin with it was normal and relatively heavy or a medium flow and now it is on or off. I wake in the mornings and think great it’s finished, and then by 11am I feel it start again! I got really worried as having a period for longer than 5 days is very unusual for my body so I went to the the GP. He was not worried in the slightest and said it is my body still flushing everything out.
Just wanted to see if anyone has a similar experience! We are really keen to try and get pregnant again but at the moment I can’t see it happening if I’m constantly bleeding or on my period.
Since the miscarriage I feel I’ve just been bleeding with very small windows in between and it’s really getting me down. I’m 28, and am really worrying that I’m now going to struggle to get pregnant!
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated smile
