Pesto pasta left out overnight?

Quick poll - stupidly left freshly made pesto pasta out of fridge all night. Is it safe to eat? It was for the kid's lunchboxes... I'm assuming needs to go in bin 😔

A PP makes a good point about packed lunches being left out of fridges until lunchtime. Schools are very warm environments.

During last summer’s heatwave, it transpired that packed lunches were being wheeled outside and left in the heat for a couple of hours before being eaten. Not the best of ideas!!

I strongly suspect the pesto pasta would be fine but if you are unsure don’t do it.

TatianaLarina · 01/08/2019 08:56

It will be fine. Just don’t make a habit of it.

Fallofrain · 01/08/2019 09:01

I would eat it

Richlyfruited · 01/08/2019 09:01

Jinglinghellsbells that's what I had thought too but as it says below still a risk!

'Rice and pasta can contain bacteria whose spores survive the cooking process. If boiled rice or pasta are left out at 12-14o C for a long time (more than 4-6 hours), it can become extremely dangerous to eat. At this temperature the spore producing bacteria can form heat resistant toxins'.

Rockbird · 01/08/2019 09:02

I would eat it but I wouldn't give it to young children so you made the right call IMO.

JinglingHellsBells · 01/08/2019 09:06

@richlyfruited I don't trust the site. It's not a UK public health/ nutrition site. Sometimes journalists make mistakes in their online writing.

JinglingHellsBells · 01/08/2019 09:07

Pasta does not have spores. it's badly written.

Beautiful3 · 01/08/2019 09:09

It's fine.

Trooperslaneagain · 01/08/2019 09:28

The sausages for our tea were left out overnight to defrost.

I do this all the time with loads of stuff and none of us have ever been sick.

Does the food poisoning risk for pasta depend on whether it's egg pasta or not?

I've never heard of pasta being high risk so maybe dried pasta is ok?

LoafofSellotape · 01/08/2019 09:40

Does the food poisoning risk for pasta depend on whether it's egg pasta or not?

Iirc it's to do with how fast the pasta deteriorates and starts multiplying bacteria (which is t killed by heating it up)not what it contains.

It's one of those things where people will be convinced it's all well and good as they've been doing it for years, but it's not good food hygiene and the potential to be ill is most definitely there.

LoafofSellotape · 01/08/2019 09:42

Also Google endospores vs spores- I think the article above is badly translated not incorrect?

AE18 · 01/08/2019 10:57

I've eaten it before and been fine but I wouldn't give it to kids, no.

HeadintheiClouds · 01/08/2019 11:04

Shock Shock Shock. I never knew pasta carried as big a food poisoning risk as rice! More paranoia in the kitchen, to add to my already considerable food issues. Bollocks.

LoafofSellotape · 01/08/2019 15:26

Basic food hygiene is cool quickly and refrigerate, do it with everything and you'll be fine and no angst involved HeadintheiClouds

HeadintheiClouds · 01/08/2019 15:33

Thanks Loaf Blush. God, I sound like a right bloody idiot.

12 hours is still a nice little breeding session for bacteria and a cool night is not going to be the same as refrigerating it
