Pesto pasta left out overnight?

Scottishgirl85 · 01/08/2019 06:56

Quick poll - stupidly left freshly made pesto pasta out of fridge all night. Is it safe to eat? It was for the kid's lunchboxes... I'm assuming needs to go in bin 😔

I’m being thick here but don’t know what the AIBU is to vote.

Anyway I’d eat it.

When you say made fresh do you mean fresh pasta with homemade pesto where you blend your own basil etc. If so then I would eat it myself as it sounds yummy but would heat it to within an inch of its life as there’s a lot that could start to turn.

If you mean you cooked dried pasta and added a newly opened jar of pesto then I’d give it to the kids. There is a lot less to “go off”. They’llbe Fine.

LegionOfDoom · 01/08/2019 07:54

I’ve eaten stuff left overnight and been fine. As long as it doesn’t smell bad, you’ll be good.

Ohyesiam · 01/08/2019 07:55

Definitely not. Someone died recently after eating pasta that had been left out (for five days)
Five days is obviously dangerous, overnight is absolutely fine.

lv20 · 01/08/2019 07:55

It will be fine

Roomba · 01/08/2019 07:58

I would and have eaten left out pesto pasta on several occasions and been absolutely fine. But given it is warm at the moment and guven it is for the kids, I'd not risk it with this one sorry. I'd save it for me instead 😉 but I'd not want to risk my kids getting ill. My stomach is more cast iron!

MummyDummyNow · 01/08/2019 07:58

Very low risks food so I'd definitely eat it, and give it to the children.

nooddsocksforme · 01/08/2019 08:05

foodsafety.asn.au/pasta/]]
Pasta is not low risk[[

ODFOx · 01/08/2019 08:05

I was in the YABU get it down you camp until I saw it was for lunchboxes, so it won't be refrigerated all morning (it's going to be warm) and can't be heated before eating.
Bung it in the fridge and eat it tonight.

MrPan · 01/08/2019 08:07

Leave it out for a couple more days yet. Hasn't fully matured. Only one night is no challenge.

Ilovesweatybollocks · 01/08/2019 08:14

Definitely bin it. My mum had food poisoning from eating rice that had been left out overnight and she was so sick for about 3 weeks and we were all very worried so really not worth the risk

Trickyteens · 01/08/2019 08:16

Don't eat it.

Bacteria need food, warmth and moisture to survive, and that has all 3.

Scottishgirl85 · 01/08/2019 08:17

Thanks everyone! I found some frozen macaroni in the freezer so given them that instead. It's for their dinner at childminder's house and they're only 1 and 4 years old so probably delicate stomachs. It was in tightly sealed tupperware but had condensation on lid, so didn't want to risk it as our house is warm. Knew I could rely on mumsnet, thanks!

Yes I hit voting button by mistake. Agree it made no sense!

LoafofSellotape · 01/08/2019 08:19

Just wanted to agree with pp, pasta isn't 'low risk' at all.

Smokesandeats · 01/08/2019 08:20

How warm is your kitchen? Was the food covered?

It’s not like it’s a hugely expensive dish - you can buy a packet of pasta and a jar of sauce very cheaply. Is it really worth taking the risk?

Smokesandeats · 01/08/2019 08:22

I’ve seen your update. You’ve done the right thing although you’ll get a few posters telling you how wasteful it is.

QueenEnid · 01/08/2019 08:23

I would eat it

Richlyfruited · 01/08/2019 08:28

Pasta is on a par with rice if not more risk for food poisoning from what I've read.

The worst food poisoning we had in our family was from a jar of salsa that had previously been left out out of the fridge. Veggies are definitely not safer than meat! I'm super careful since this happened as even DH was really ill.

user1493494961 · 01/08/2019 08:32

I'd eat it (and have).

villamariavintrapp · 01/08/2019 08:36

I do this regularly. My fridge is far too stuffed full to fit my massive pasta dish in!

Ijustwanttoretire · 01/08/2019 08:37

In the winter I might risk it but in this heat and with the flies around I would't...

JinglingHellsBells · 01/08/2019 08:39

Pasta should be okay as it's wheat based (like bread.) Rice is a different matter.

JinglingHellsBells · 01/08/2019 08:40

@Richlyfruited No, pasta is wheat (like bread) and rice is a grain which has spores in it which multiply rapidly when cooked, cooled and eaten later.

Janiiiiiiice · 01/08/2019 08:40

I do this quite often. Pesto is very salty so probably a decent preservative. If it looks, smells and tastes normal I would go for it.

(I am generally very relaxed about things like this though!)

adaline · 01/08/2019 08:42

I always leave pasta bake in the oven overnight and eat it the next day for lunch. Never ever had a problem. I wouldn't if it had meat in but for pesto I really don't see the problem.

Loveislandaddict · 01/08/2019 08:45

I’d eat it.

If I batch cook stuff, and it’s still slightly warm, I will often leave food in their saucepans overnight. Still here to tell the tale.
