To think people might not want to buy a house next door to a funeral director?

Found out today that two doors away is turning into a mortuary/funeral director's business. So dead bodies will be stored there. It's currently a gift shop in a village, very residential area.

Neighbour who will live next door told me. My first reaction was that I wasn't bothered.....they'll be quiet! Neighbour is worried about house price being affected.

Ive now googled and it does seem that being in the same area as a funeral director wipes 6.5% off the value of your property. And I guess this might be more if you're only 2 doors away?

If we were to sell our house do you think a lot of people would be put off by this? Is it the thought of dead bodies which would put people off because this doesn't bother me? I'm slightly bothered about a possible increase in parking issues If there's lots of families coming and going. I'm not sure how busy it will be. I guess hearses May sometimes bring a body back in the middle of the night if they're rung to come and fetch a body.

We have a funeral directors about eight houses down from ours, on a very narrow street with notoriously limited parking. It's never been an issue with parking and in the four years we've lived here I've never seen anyone/anything come in or out apart from on one occasion.

Crispmonster123 · 31/07/2019 21:23

It wouldn’t bother me at all

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 31/07/2019 21:23

The funeral homes I've been in only store one or two people at a time.

Doubt it eould be that busy.

InsertFunnyUsername · 31/07/2019 21:23

Hmm, this is purely personal reasons and im sure many would not agree. But after my DM passed i said i would never go to a FD again (obviously i know i will have to) so i don't think i would buy your house.

My biggest regret is using my local one, i walk past it when i go in to town and my eyes well up everytime (dramatic i know)

WoogleCone · 31/07/2019 21:24

I live 4 doors down from one and honestly they dont impact on any of us at all. Cars dont start procession from there and parking has never been busier than a regular street.
It doesn't even occur to me about the dead bodies, they're laying in rest, they're peaceful.

PotteringAlong · 31/07/2019 21:25

It would put me off because it’s a 24/7 business and I wouldn’t want that

MorgueDweller · 31/07/2019 21:25

Well I guess if we couldnt sell and ended up living here till we died it would be convenient! Grin

If dh goes first I could push him round in the wheelbarrow!

It wouldn’t put me off at all. Like other posters have said, I’d much rather live near one than a betting shop or takeaway.

FenellaMaxwell · 31/07/2019 21:27

It would put me off from the point of view I have a loud toddler and a yappy dog and I would hate to feel we were being disrespectful

MorgueDweller · 31/07/2019 21:28

It used to be a post office and sorting office and apparantly the mail deliveries were at 5am. I never heard any mail vans so I don't think any hearses coming and going would be heard from our house.

Wouldn't bother me at all. Perfect neighbours as far as I'm concerned.

twattymctwatterson · 31/07/2019 21:30

I think if you live on the village high street that's the chance you take really. Could just as easily be any business

MorgueDweller · 31/07/2019 21:32

It's quite a small village, I'm fairly surprised a funeral director is moving in. I kind of don't associate them with villages.

Would definitely not live next door to a funeral director or a cemetery...

Fink · 31/07/2019 21:32

It wouldn't bother me, but I work in the church already so I end up seeing a couple of funerals a week anyway, plus I sometimes help with the planning. So I guess I'm not your typical homebuyer from that pov.

In our church (Catholic), the funeral procession never leaves from the funeral parlour, they come to the church without a procession and then the procession is from the church. If they're coming from home then there's sometimes a procession to the church but that's very unusual now.

Hairyheadphones · 31/07/2019 21:32

It would put me off.

I wouldn’t be bothered by the dead bodies but would feel sad seeing so many emotional people frequently. I would also feel that I had to keep noise to a minimum out of respect, even kids chatting outside the house/playing in the garden.

Disfordarkchocolate · 31/07/2019 21:33

It wouldn't bother me at all.

HarryDaylight · 31/07/2019 21:34

If it is really proven that property decreases in value, or becomes difficult to sell, I would be concerned. No other reason would put me off.

feelingsicknow · 31/07/2019 21:34

I would love it. Seriously.

I used to live in a flat above a funeral directors - we were two floors above the morgue!

It was absolutely fine, honestly.

HotChocolateLover · 31/07/2019 21:36

There’s one within sight of my mum’s front door (about 10 houses away) Before this thread i’d Never even considered whether it would be a problem tbh. For me personally I wouldn’t be bothered but after reading the responses on here, I probably wouldn’t bother viewing any if they are close to a funeral parlour just in case I had trouble selling 🤦‍♀️

feelingsicknow · 31/07/2019 21:36

It's a funeral parlour. Nobody is being buried there. Why would you feel you can't be jolly? I think it would add a calmness to the area (aware I'm probably weird)

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 31/07/2019 21:36

Wouldn't even be a consideration for me
