Sorry not an Ainu but I was hoping for a quick response. Do had blood tests at gap this morning and they said results in about a week, he was also referred for an mri scan as go could not find anything obvious by examining him. 5.45pm today he got a text saying to make an appointment to discuss results and also that his scan request had been declined so the speak to go about that. He rand and receptionist said nothing on system yet and first appt on 14th August. He can goin at 7.30am to request a same day appt but he is terrified thinking they have found something serious so quick was the text. I am trying to reassure him that if it was that bad go would have rung in person to discuss but does anyone know if this is the case? Should we be worried

That's a really quick turnaround- is go in the morning and try and see the doctor

nothingtowearever · 31/07/2019 18:33

Unless it was just a rountie text that everyone gets after bloods because that really is fast to have tested it already

NoBaggyPants · 31/07/2019 18:33

If it was serious they'd have called or left a note on the system to give an urgent appointment.

It's not unusual for blood tests to be processed on the same day.

fromthefloorboardsup · 31/07/2019 18:34

I don't think we can tell you - it seems to be different with different surgeries etc. Just try not to worry til much until you know as you can't do much about it yet. I hope it's all okay for you.

NoSauce · 31/07/2019 18:34

Did you explain about the text? Sorry you’re worried, maybe ring back in the morning or get there first thing for an appointment.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/07/2019 18:38

Thanks it’s reassuring to know it’s not unusual for them to be processed on the same day and yes I did think they would have arranged a quicker appt if it was really bad. He certainly will be there first thing and if it turns out to be a routine text he will let them know he is not impressed. I am wondering why mri has been turned down

LittleLongDog · 31/07/2019 18:38

I think it depends on the surgery. My old GP has text me before but I would be surprised if my new surgery did.

Vilanelle · 31/07/2019 18:40

If it was something awful wouldn't they ask him to bring someone along?

I'm a GP and have blood results back electronically by 4.30ish if they were taken before 10am or so. I then read and annotate them and send an e-message to the offfice staff to contact patient if needed, so if they have time that day (and they often do these tasks in the last half hour before we close) you could easily be contacted the same day, and it could be over something very minor / straightforward. If it was something really scary I'd be phoning you myself.

However it is anxiety-provoking (which is why I try and put some context / reassurance into the messages I send out) and most surgeries will have some sort of phone appointment / phone back system so I'd ring in the morning and ask for the GP to give him a ring back if possible- might not be possible tomorrow but should be quicker than the next face to face appt. Hope all is ok.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/07/2019 18:45

I don’t know Vilanelle the receptionist didn’t seem to know anything! Just said I’ll make an appt ... on 14th August I am hoping that if they were able to send a text then something would have been on the system to say get him in ASAP if it were serious. I’m telling him it’s probably some deficiency like iron or something but he’s worrying about the scan being rejected.

OP posts:
StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/07/2019 18:47

Thanks all, it looked automated but personalised with the scan refusal bit. Glasgogin thanks I hoped to hear that go would have rung if it were that concerning and to hear that results can be processed this fast

OP posts:
StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/07/2019 18:49

Glasgowgin can I ask your opinion as to why a scan request might be rejected?

OP posts:
Glasgowgin · 31/07/2019 18:52

Don't know about the MR request as here GPs can't request them at all- it has to be a hospital consultant. There is probably a very strict protocol that GPs can request scans on and he falls outwith it somehow- could be as simple as age etc. It may be that he would have to be referred to a specialist first, but I'm only guessing.

Glasgowgin · 31/07/2019 18:53

Cross posted there!
A rapid rejection suggests to me it' probably not met the criteria for a GP request. It may even be GPs cannot request them at all (like here) and a new/locum/young GP hasn't realised.

swingofthings · 31/07/2019 18:55

This happened to me once and I freaked out. Receptionist said she couldn't tell me anything. It turned out one of my result were elevated but not enough to warrant concerns, just to retest 3 months later. It sounded alarming to me but just routine process to them.

Weepatchesoflove · 31/07/2019 19:18

Another saying that blood results can be back on the same day. My youngest dc has to get his bloods tested regularly and sometimes it needs to go to the hospital and the results are back the same day as we get a phone call regarding them later that day.

My mum had to give blood at her doctors years ago and was phoned and told she could either have an ambulance or get herself to the hospital that night.

I’d imagine that by tomorrow the receptionists would know more and able to put his mind at ease. Doesn’t help tonight, but honestly if it was serious they’d have an appointment for him the next day or he’d be asked to go to the hospital.

Hope everything turns out ok Flowers

Hecateh · 31/07/2019 19:21

Maybe the request to make appointment came through so quickly because they new it would be a couple of weeks before you would get one

Soontobe60 · 31/07/2019 19:33

The text will have been generated when the blood tests were sent to be tested. Our GP tells us when to ring in for the results, and if they need to discuss them we then get an appointment.

fraxion · 31/07/2019 19:37

I have regular blood tests and I've lost count of the calls I've had late afternoon about my results of the bloods that were taken that morning. Sometimes it's the receptionist asking me to make an appointment and 'not to worry', which you immediately do! Sometimes it's my GP, but he rings early evening and he'll talk to me about the results. Fully expecting a call after my bloods next week as I've been on antibiotics and they can skew the results as they mess with my medication. I need to stop going on a Friday as it's the whole weekend to fret!

Twice I had a recall to repeat my bloods and they wouldn't tell me why but I pushed for an answer. First time the sample was spoiled as it wasn't tested the same day and the second time my sample was dropped.

I'd do as Glasgowgin suggested and ring tomorrow. Hope everything is okay.

Glitterblue · 31/07/2019 19:39

My DH had this once, a text late in the day the same day as he had bloods done. We had a sleepless night worrying, he spkento the GP on the phone the following morning and it was just that the blood test had shown up some of his medication needed to be tweaked and she wanted to tell him to up the dose. Try not to worry too much, I know it's not easy though. I hope all is OK.

Yogagirl123 · 31/07/2019 19:44

Try not to worry OP, I have a blood test every 3mths, the results are always back the same day. If there had been anything urgent, a GP would have called your DH. Wishing you good luck for the future.

iolaus · 31/07/2019 19:49

If they were really bad they wouldn't text - they'd be on the phone to actually talk to you

I've had bad results back quickly before and they were on the phone, within hours

Witchend · 31/07/2019 19:52

Ds had an MRI told to come and discuss at next paed appointment in September. Then within the week got a letter saying "due to unforeseen circumstances we're bringing it forward to end of June" (end of the week)
Cue me doing minor panic. Happened that he was seeing ENT the next day, and I mentioned I was worried. The consultant told me to wait a minute, then called me back in. It was no issues found at all, and she just had to get permission to let me know that.
Ds likes to tell people he has a perfect brain. Grin
