Sorry not an Ainu but I was hoping for a quick response. Do had blood tests at gap this morning and they said results in about a week, he was also referred for an mri scan as go could not find anything obvious by examining him. 5.45pm today he got a text saying to make an appointment to discuss results and also that his scan request had been declined so the speak to go about that. He rand and receptionist said nothing on system yet and first appt on 14th August. He can goin at 7.30am to request a same day appt but he is terrified thinking they have found something serious so quick was the text. I am trying to reassure him that if it was that bad go would have rung in person to discuss but does anyone know if this is the case? Should we be worried

IME if it's really serious, the hospital lab ask someone to contact you to go to A+E.
Might be automated text?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/07/2019 20:12

MANY MANY. Thanks to all of you who bothered to respond I am so grateful, you have really put my mind to rest and made me much calmer so I can calm dh down it is so reassuring to get the feedback saying it’s not unusual and that go would call if major. I am not going to worry anymore until there is actually something to worry about so thank you all. Dh is going down early to get a same day appt sorted or at the very least an explanation as to what the text meant. I’ll let you know tomorrow what the outcome was.

GP surgeries do that routinely nowadays, it really doesn't mean there's anything to worry about, just that they don't want any patients to fall through the net.

georgialondon · 31/07/2019 20:27

If the result is very serious they call you and tell you to present to A&E.

BiBabbles · 31/07/2019 20:50

When I've previously had not serious blood test results and other things to discuss, I've been asked to make an appointment to discuss with a GP. This has happened when I've been borderline or just a slight issue and generally not given the actual results unless I make a point of asking for them.

When I had a serious 'how are you functioning' blood test result, I had the nurse practitioner call me, walk me through my results, discuss the medication she was prescribing and what I need to do when I finished the course, and she had the prescription sitting in the GP's reception for me to pick ASAP. It was actually great because I'd never had anyone walk me through my results for this type of test so well before.

I've no idea why it's like this, it does seem a good way to make people panic.

AlexaAmbidextra · 31/07/2019 20:57

I had bloods done yesterday at 1pm and the results were on the system today at 5pm. All my results were normal. So it can happen and doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad.

imperialqueen · 31/07/2019 21:02

I had my blood taken at 5pm at my doctors practice. I received a phone call from the out of hours gp at 7.30pm telling me to get to my local hospital (he told me the ward to go to) as soon as possible for a blood transfusion. If it was bad news the gp would have spoken to you or left a message asking you to call him back.

Sunnydays999 · 31/07/2019 21:21

I do admin for a gp. We often get the bloods a lot sooner than we say we do . The gp needs time to look at them . So the receptionist prob can see there on the system but the gp hasn’t looked yet

Sunnydays999 · 31/07/2019 21:23

And if it’s urgent the receptionist would of been told as they would want everyone to be able to get in touch with you . I would ring tomorrow and ask to go on the gps call list

Likethebattle · 01/08/2019 01:02

I got blood test and was told they take around 5 days. The GP called and left a message the following day, I was cracking my pants until she rang me back to say that my test had shown signs of infection and had I been ill recently as from what she could see she would have expected to have seen me i the surgery for treatment. I felt ok but had been in holiday a few weeks before and been hit by tonsillitis (hit quite literally as I was quite unwell). She just wanted new bliss in a week to ensure the infection was clear. They do come back quickly but I think they tell you the worst case so you don’t call up too early. If if was serious the doctor would call or they would have a note on his file to give an immediate appointment.

Hope all goes well today.
Even with all our stories, you are still left with a worrying niggle of ~ but but but.... what if it is something.
It is nearly impossible to not worry. Flowers

thisisthetime · 01/08/2019 08:15

It’s standard. I’ve had 2 blood tests in the last 2 weeks. I got a text to contact surgery on the same day both times, blood results often come back straight away and if any of the values are higher or lower than normal range they send a text automatically at my surgery. I have low iron and something else that is not at all serious.

I think if it was particularly serious they would have called and insisted on an immediate appointment so I wouldn’t really worry.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 01/08/2019 10:30

well all is well, blood tests are all normal (phew) appt still stands for 14th but nothing to worry about it appears. DH did try discussing with GP the worrying nature of the text when he was told he was being tested for cancer and would get results in a week and got a same day text but sadly she was unable to see why this might scare someone,. ah well, alls well that ends well

That's great news, so pleased he phoned and spoke to the doctor. Can't believe she was unable to see why anyone would be worried getting results so fast given the circumstances!

caughtinanet · 01/08/2019 10:48

How can the GP not see that the message was worrying.

Of course most patients would worry in those circumstances

WaferThinIce · 01/08/2019 11:10

Thats really good news.
I've recently had a problem with my bloods, my white cell count was too low. The GP telephoned me the same day to discuss and arrange repeat tests. Called me the following week to say they had improved slightly but were still low and she wanted them repeated in two weeks. Each time she explained that whilst low they were not too concerning. After the third lot of bloods a receptionist called and booked a telephone call in with me for a few days later.

In a very unhelpful way I guess what I'm trying to say is that if they have a genuine concern you don't usually just get a text.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 01/08/2019 16:22

Thanks all

Most GPs aren't allowed to directly refer for MRI scans.

Myshitisreal · 01/08/2019 16:38

Glad he's OK. I had an mri by Doctor 😷 referral
