Lost and found kitten, not coming to collect!

Long story short, over a week ago we found a sick kitten on our road. Took her in, to the vets, paid for medicines, stuck up posters etc etc.

On Sunday eve I got a message from the owner, who first thing Monday morning sent me proof she is theirs (photos etc). Said she (or he, not sure) is away and their partner would be in touch to arrange collection.

Fast forward to Tuesday and no word from them, chased late last night and was told curtly we need to contact their partner. AIBU that they should be a bit more grateful and also make more of an effort to collect the kitten promptly? Thinking now we should ask them to pay for the vet bill as it feels like they're just using us as a kitten boarding house!

What if it’s a pedigree cat and you have it’s pedigree papers though?
Or it’s microchipped to your name and address?*

I think you were responding to the police who said you can't steal a cat rather than this particular kitten? I think you asked a very good question, I would assume that the law is different with regards to a registered Pedigree cat.

MissConductUS · 30/07/2019 18:42

I think the kitten has acquired a new hooman slave owner at this point. Grin

It doesn't really sound like they'll care much if you just stop chasing after them about it.

sweetkitty · 30/07/2019 18:42

Yes sorry I was responding to the post about a cat not being your property not this particular kitten.

My new kittens 10 weeks old and he’s tiny and brainless gets himself into all sorts of mischief. The thought of him being lost outside horrifies me, I’d be out searching until I got him back. I agree with a previous poster they don’t seem very interested. They knew their very young kitten was sickly, she managed to get out and they’ve not bothered to look for it or come and collect it once someone else has found her.

I agree she’s much much better off with you OP.

Your new fur-child is beautiful! Wink

Alsohuman · 30/07/2019 19:03

Beautiful kitten, so pleased he’s yours now.

mrscatmad31 · 30/07/2019 19:04

A microchip isn't proof of ownership either sadly! Pedigree papers may be though
Gorgeous kitten, don't give it back!

SunshineCake · 30/07/2019 19:06

Congrats on your new family boss.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/07/2019 19:42

Omg 😮

Those ears ! So gorgeous 😍

CokeAndCrispsAndDip · 30/07/2019 19:44

Ha, that's a little look of love there ready to wrap you and all your hooman friends round her carefully groomed paw.

Keep her, sod the other family, if I lost a loved kitten I'd not settle till I had her back. You've done a good thing OP

Sunburntnoseandears · 30/07/2019 19:45

Proof of vet's bill payments would be proof....

FuzzyPuffling · 30/07/2019 19:47

That kitty's name is "Keepie"

bodgeitandscarper · 30/07/2019 20:10

Cats are legally owned:- Theft Act 1968 and Criminal Damage Act 1971

"Under the Theft Act, cats are regarded as the ‘property’ of their owner. The theft of a cat is treated as an offence under the Theft Act, in the same way as theft of any other property. A cat that is lost or has strayed is generally regarded as the property of the original owner. It is therefore necessary to make all reasonable endeavours to locate the original owner whenever possible. This means that, strictly speaking, you cannot just keep a stray cat that wanders into your garden; you should make some effort to find the owner."

However, this kitten seems to have very bad owners, I would be keeping the cat and asking for vet bills and billing them for your time and care of the cat on top if they do turn up for it. You probably won't see them for dust. They have shown no interest in collecting the cat, on that basis alone I'd keep it.

isadoradancing123 · 30/07/2019 20:28

They are obvioulsy not too bothered about it, i would say to them that its escaped

sweetkitty · 30/07/2019 21:15

I just wouldn’t bother saying anything m, don’t contact them again.

If they contact you say you won’t give them the cat until they pay the vets bills.

Sadly people like that will probably just go get another kitten.

TwistyTop · 30/07/2019 22:30

That is so sad. My rescue was only 10 weeks old when I brought her home. Yes, too young to be away from her mum, but she was found by the council alone at the side of the road with a smashed up tail and no mum or other kittens anywhere in sight. Poor little thing was so desperate for affection. If she'd managed to get out and gotten lost at such a young age I would have been absolutely beside myself looking all over for her, and if someone had called me to say they'd found her I would have dropped everything to collect her and bring her home safely that very second. It really does say a lot that they aren't too bothered about her. Please just keep her OP... You have already shown her more love and care than these people have...

PinkDaydreams · 04/08/2019 19:50

Please can we have an update @fabaga Smile

fabaga · 05/08/2019 19:44

@PinkDaydreams unsurprisingly after a mention about the vets bill four days later the original owners have become very unresponsive...

Kitten is sleeping next to me on the sofa watching tv Grin I think she's chosen her new home!

Aww congratulations on your kitten Op, shame it was because of some ungrateful bugger who didn't care enough for it. What will you call her?

PinkDaydreams · 06/08/2019 07:12

@fabaga I’m so glad kitty is staying with you! 😍

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 06/08/2019 14:27

Lovely update Op, hope that's the last you hear of them and Kitty stays in her new home where she will be loved and cared for.

KatherineJaneway · 06/08/2019 17:38

Well done OP, you'll never go to the toilet again on your own Grin
