Not really AIBU, more Am I The Only One?
Am I the only one who finds the phrase ‘This too shall pass’, a Mumsnet favourite, really annoying? It offers no help, no advice and is basically saying you’ve got to put up with it which you already know because you don’t have a choice!

Is it just me or does anyone else find it annoying?

But most of the time, if we find ourselves in a shit situation, you just have to wait for it to pass.

And sometimes reminding yourself it wont be like that forever, can help.

I neither really like it of really dislike it to be honest. Sometimes you do need to be just reminded there is often a light at the end of the very long tunnel.

Dolphinia · 30/07/2019 07:47

I like it, it’s sometimes good (but sad at the same time) to remember that nothing is permanent

roseenglishrose · 30/07/2019 07:48

That phrase doesn't bother me at all, but I cannot stand 'it is what it is'. People seem to say it when they don't know what else to say and to me, it means nothing!

Hermagsjesty · 30/07/2019 07:49

I like it. I think it’s helpful to remember we don’t always have the power to change something but that it will eventually come to an end.

BertrandRussell · 30/07/2019 07:51

I like it. It’s very easy, particularly with small babies, to think that this is how life is going to be forever......

TheRedBarrows · 30/07/2019 07:53

Sometimes the only realistic advice is ‘wait for it to pass’ or some version thereof.

SummerHouse · 30/07/2019 07:57

It is what it is.

Worlds0kayestmum · 30/07/2019 08:02

I like it. It's helped me during difficult periods to remember that it won't always feel that way

SusieSusieSoo · 30/07/2019 08:09

When I was suffering with morning sickness that was so utterly terrible I could hardly lift my head off the bathroom floor my mum said this to me and actually it helped me - had never heard it before. So imo yabu this time sorry op xx

SuzieQQQ · 30/07/2019 08:17

Not at all unreasonable. My most hated saying is” it wasn’t meant to be” What an absolute load of shit.

MissClareRemembers · 30/07/2019 08:18

@roseenglishrose I love “it is what it is”! I hadn’t really come across it until we were selling/buying our house and our solicitor used it loads. I found the whole process incredibly stressful and even developed a twitch so actually found her use of that phrase sort of grounding and reassuring!

SuzieQQQ · 30/07/2019 08:18

Not forgetting “everything happens for a reason” .

herculepoirot2 · 30/07/2019 08:22

I hate it whilst recognising it to be the case. It is quite nauseating as a phrase.

herculepoirot2 · 30/07/2019 08:22

And I hate “...if it’s not alright, it’s not the end.” Doesn’t really apply to plague/war/fire/cancer...

Ijustwanttoretire · 30/07/2019 08:26

”it wasn’t meant to be”

I use this, but I am a bit of a fatalist so as far as I am concerned if something doesn't happen then it obviously wasn't meant to be! Sorry!

hazeyjane · 30/07/2019 08:31

I find most phrases like this annoying, usually most annoying at the time they should be helpful ....they just make me snarl.

shit happens is ok though.

SoftBlocks · 30/07/2019 08:34

I quite like ‘This too shall pass’ because it also means to make the most of it when things are going well.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 30/07/2019 08:40

‘This too shall pass’ and ‘It was ever thus’ - another one people like to throw in on MN - are totally wanky.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 30/07/2019 08:42

That phrase doesn't bother me at all, but I cannot stand 'it is what it is'. People seem to say it when they don't know what else to say and to me, it means nothing!

Totally agree. Of course it is what it ducking is - Otherwise it is what it isn’t, which is impossible.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 30/07/2019 08:42

Ducking autocorrect Grin

pictish · 30/07/2019 08:49

I quite like, “If you’re going through Hell, keep going.”

I have used this recently at home in regards to the parenting of our 17 yr old son.

But yes Ikwym. The fact that most shit spells do pass is of little comfort when you’re drowning in it.

Bezalelle · 30/07/2019 08:54

Yeah, it's annoying. I imagine it's said by the same sort of whimsical, ruddy-cheeked women that "put the world to rights" over pink gin in country pubs.
