To have not known this about Ryanair?

So, we’ve not flown for around 5 years.
Instead we’ve done ferries, a couple of cruises and U.K. holidays.
Booked our flights with Ryanair and booked 2 bags which could each contain 20kg.
Weighed them the night before. 1 bag was 20kg and 1 bag was 22kg. So 2kg over.
Spoke to a few people who said the person checking the bags usually turns a blind eye with a couple of kg extra weight. In fact I’ve never been charged for excess luggage, even when my bag was 29kg instead of 25kg EasyJet just stuck a “heavy” label on it.
Anyway, got to the airport and it’s self check in.
You weigh your own baggage and before the machine prints you a luggage label you have to pay on the card machine attached to the scales for any KG you are over.
So you can’t physically board a flight until you have paid £11 per kilo for anything over.
I paid obviously, as my case was over, but I never realised this check in system even existed!
Has it been around for long? Or am just not an airport pro these days?

Ryan air will fleece you for every penhy you have with a long list of rules/things you have to do, then treat you like cattle. I would only use them if desperate.

TheFridgeRaider · 31/07/2019 08:25

Re Liverpool. I think they are there, Are they yellow? We have to go to desk anyway fir visa check, so never used them

TheFridgeRaider · 31/07/2019 08:32

Ryanair will not "fleece every penny of you" if you simply keep the rules🙄 Same rules as other airlines.

Re the cabin size case, now the one which comes with priority. Unfortunately they differ from airline to airline. Ryanair has same like TUI and flybe and thomas cook. But it's smaller than for example BA or aer lingus. These two also differ🤷 It is annoying.

I will NOT ever fly with Ryan air... Have always hated them but the icing on the cake was on a flight back from Spain where the baskets that are used to measure your handluggage were very clearly smaller than the outbound flight meaning lots of people had bags that fit on the out bound flight but then were too big for cabin baggage on the way home. They charged an elderly lady £50 to put her (absolutely perfect sized) bag in the hold and then had the cheek to bring her back on the flight deck and put it in overhead storage!! Robbing bastard's.. I pulled them on it because the lady hadn't noticed and they said they would arrange a refund 😠😠😠

Perhaps I’m wrong but extra weight on an aircraft equals extra fuel so only seems right you pay for that

smilingontheinside · 31/07/2019 10:38

Lots of people complain about Ryanair, baggage allowance, charges, seating, staff etc etc. They are a cheap no frills airline and all their allowances for baggage is set out on their website. I fly with them regularly and never have a problem. Most smaller airlines charge for all the "extras" now and the one thing it had taught me is to travel light, not over pack and take far too much stuff most of which came back unused/unworn. As for self check in, thats been around for some years.

If everyone stopped using them they would get the message and price their tickets to include a 23kg suitcase and 10-14kg cabin bag which is what normal people take on a holiday

That's what airlines used to do, but then that penalised those of us who didn't need checked luggage for every flight and dont care where we sit on a plane. I used to live abroad and would often fly home for a weekend/event/short holiday and I would only need my hand luggage allowance so I could easily fly between Spain and the north of England for £40 return. As a poor student/graduate £40 was in my budget, but if I'd been forced to pay more for hold luggage I didn't want or need then theres no way I could have afforded to visit friends and family anywhere near as often as I did.

Ryanair et al are the "self catering" level of flights - you are paying to be flown from Point A to Point B. If you want anything extra - like taking hold luggage, choosing seats, priority boarding, flexible tickets etc - then you add it as you need it, and the prices are clearly laid out in advance. If you want an All Inclusive price, that's what the old airlines are there for.

Also, what exactly are you taking on holiday that you require over 33kg of stuff (23kg case, 10kg hand luggage and a personal item) for a 2 week holiday?! I have just come back from 5 weeks in Spain and took a 20kg case and my handbag. I used my 10kg hand luggage for all my work stuff (paperwork/work computer that wasnt allowed to go in the hold so I had to carry on board) and the only reason I used my full hold allowance was because I knew I was going to be in the middle of nowhere with no laundry facilities (except my bathtub) for 5 weeks and didn't want to have to do laundry every day.

We were considering a city break in a couple of months but the only airline that fly to the destination is Ryanair. I have never flown with them and the reason I'm not keen is because they cancel flights on a whim. Not to mention the flight times are utter crap. I don't want to go away for 3 nights and not land until almost midnight on the first day, so we scrapped that idea.

We have used Easyjet quite a few times to London for connecting flights as they were the only airline that flew to Gatwick and they were always really good, fantastic onboard crew. Unfortunately they pulled the route which is a pain in the arse.

TheFridgeRaider · 01/08/2019 09:21

I've been flying with Ryanair for well over decade and only time flight was cancelled was when Eyjafjallajökull erupted. None of my family and friends had flight cancelled too 🤞 Cancellations are usually due to strikes. May it be their staff or airport staff.

RightYesButNo · 01/08/2019 09:36

@PolPotNoodle I’m having a shite day (at only 930am), but now I’m laughing like a drain at 22kg worth of dildos in the airport.

CoffeenWalnut · 01/08/2019 11:34

@lily019
Well done you: I also carry a "jobsworth bag" that I have never had to use. Also a Ryanair special jacket" with dozens of huge pockets that will hold my handbag and its contents.

fraxion · 01/08/2019 14:41

@TheFridgeRaider, I'm in Scotland and they have cancelled whole routes at the drop of a hat. We were looking at flying to Chania in Crete last year and by sheer chance read they were closing their base there but flights were still available to book on the website.

Re Eyjafjallajökull that was a close call for us as my husband went away on business for two nights and ended up having to stay ten! When he eventually got home we were going on holiday the next day. Arrived at our destination and they promptly closed the airport due to further eruptions.

Boulezvous · 01/08/2019 15:28

British Airways self check in do it too. It's just I think the weight allowance is higher.
